They don't even work for their intended purpose of stopping reverb/echo either, they're too thin. To absorb sound reflections you really need thick stuff like fibreglass or acoustic foam... the amount of absorption is related to the wavelength of the frequency passing through the foam... the thicker...

Nothing on the wikipedia page mentions anything in the audible range... sounds like whoever made this video just converted the electromagnetic signal recordings into audio. I'm guessing the fact it's all so low-pitched is just artistic choice of whoever did it... still pretty sweet though.

For general clubbing the Etymotic ER-20s are great (and cheap), but the handles protrude slightly from your ears so they're not ideal for doubling-up with headphones.
