INTRODUCING ..................

Image

EMILIANO ENA

Born and bred in Rome, Italy - From a very young age, his influences came from such bands as Depeche Mode, Joy Division & New Order and the masters Ennio Morricone and Giorgio Moroder that allowed him to discover and keep his eclecticism by opening up to anything experimental.

His passion for music led him to spin records playing with the well respected Blueroom crew in Rome, and other underground parties, and naturally his desire to play his own sounds pushed him into producing his own tracks.

His music can be best described as a warm organic melodic sound with joyful and "ethno mixed electronica" beats.
Having recently played around warehouse party circuit, his sets have been well received and we are Ostara are looking forward to having him perform at Ostara Festival 2009.

This will be Emiliano’s first outdoor festival here in Australia.

Welcome aboard Emilano.

WELCOME BACK ......................

MIKE CALLANDER - DJ SET
http://www.myspace.com/mikecallander

What kind of DJ warms up for SuperMayer, John Aquaviva and Alex Smoke on the same weekend? Or before Lindstrom at a festival, before Marc Houle at a club gig, and then a closing set after Stephan Bodzin on the same night? This is the pivotal role played by Mike Callander in his beloved hometown of Melbourne.

Mike Callander's experience as a DJ is as diverse as one of his sets. With a unique and edgy sound that defies typical definition, and a versatile approach to mixing and programming that is equally suited to dancefloors and dinner parties, Mike is one of Melbourne's only DJs who might play to a house, techno or progressive dancefloor on any given night.

Mike has held long-standing residencies at some of Melbourne's most important clubbing institutions such as Sunny, Fokus, Nano, and currently at Poison Apple and Pretty Simple, but perhaps his most treasured residency was at Honkytonks, for which he also recorded a mix CD “The Last Dance" that made its way into record stores across Australia and as far away as Japan.

Since then Mike has toured all across Australia and New Zealand, and as far afield as Berlin, Madrid and Malaysia, playing alongside artists as diverse as Mathew Jonson, Michael Mayer, Radioslave, Agoria (at Berlin's Watergate), M.A.N.D.Y (both in Melbourne and Berlin), and Mr C (in Melbourne and Berlin).

Of course it's impossible to capture on paper the diversity and feel of Mike's sets, but perhaps the best indication is a snapshot of some artists alongside whom Mike has played in the last months - including Sven Vaeth, Gaiser, Optimo, Monolake, Tiefschwarz, Petter, Phil Kieran, Ben Watt, James Zabiela, Joris Voorn, Ellen Allien and Dubfire plus bands such as Booka Shade, Trentemoller and Fujiya & Miyagi (in Madrid).

Mike DJing has also earned accolades from countless touring international artists, with many labelling him one of Australia's finest - most notably Get Physical DJ T., who invited Mike to play in Berlin at his anniversary event to celebrate 20 years of DJing.

CUT N PASTED FROM LAST YEAR... RULEZ BE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME
SoulWhiteMan wrote:Erika again here.

Just thought I'd add another bit of information - there will be no alcohol sold on site but you can bring your own but we ask you, please, don't bring glass bottles if you can avoid it. It's more from a safety perspective. There will be people walking around in bare feet and would REALLY hate for someone to cut their foot on broken glass. Lets keep it safe eh?
Thanks for reading.

We'll have all sorts of music - bands and DJs. There will be something there for everyone.

A few things I would like to point out and they are -
- it's camping on site
- bring warm clothing as it does get rather chilly up in the Otways
- the site is environmentally sensitive so please be mindful of litter - reduce, reuse, recycle.
- we ask everyone to please take their rubbish home with them
- where possible, please avoid bringing glass bottles with you. We would hate for somone to cut themselves on broken glass.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me either via our myspace http://www.myspace.com/ostarafestival or via email at [email protected].

We look forward to having you spend the weekend with us. Should be a corker indeed!!!

See you all in September and keep checking our Myspace site for regular updates on line up and other activites.
Thanks everyone!

SoulWhiteMan wrote: Seriously, the site has shower facilities and flush toilets.
However, there is an ample amount of camping space, both close to the stage and further away from it -depending on whether you want to be able to hear the music from your tent or not :)
SoulWhiteMan wrote:Hi everyone,

Thought we would begin communicating the “do’s and dont’s” for Ostara Festival this year and around the site of Opoeia now called Sokil. We'll be reminding you all of these closer to the event just as a refresher.

Please take note and communicate this to all of your friends who are attending as some of these points require consideration and preparation before leaving on your travels.

First and foremost …….

• Ostara Festival is a camping only event - please pack your tents and camping gear ….. of course!

• PLEASE CARPOOLwhere possible not only to reduce carbon emissions but to also reduce the number of cars that enter onto the site - for the courageous and adventurous please consider riding your bike or planning a camel caravan.

PLEASE NOTE: We have been warned that any cars parked around the perimeter of the Opoeia/Sokil site, will be towed away. Unless of course you’re happy to assist the Surf Coast Shire as they are keen as mustard to increase budgets this year so if you feel like contributing please feel free to park along Breakfast Creek Road.

• Drive carefully and sensibly especially around the neighbouring towns as you’re heading towards and leaving Opoeia/Sokil. Most residential complaints in the past have been due to high speed driving along country roads. We have been asked that we communicate this to all attendees. There are children, families and elderly citizens in near-by towns. Please be mindful of the neighbouring residents and wildlife in the area. Most important of all, it’s for your own safety.

The road into the site is extremely treacherous especially in wet weather. Local traffic police will be patrolling the roads and have been known to make speeding festival goers pick up litter at Shannon Noll / Rogue Trader concerts.

• Pack LOTS of warm clothing and wet weather gear should it rain. It gets incredibly cold up in the Otways. Be prepared for all weather conditions. Night time activity will take place indoors and heating will be provided, as well as a number of fires around the main site including small fires in tee pees but it still gets rather chilly!!! If you do find yourself feeling cold we recommend you give someone a hug - group hugs are especially effective.

• We request that everyone pack plates, cups and cutlery in order to help reduce waste over the course of the weekend. Our caterers will be supplying a very limited amount of disposable plates/cups/cuttlery.

• You are required to take your rubbish home with you. We will provide plastic bags for your non-recyclable/recyclable matter upon entry but please pack additional just in case. Punishment for leaving piles of rubbish at your campsite will be cleaning the main dance floor of cigarette butts with a pair of tweezers!

• If you SMOKE – PLEASE we ask that you DO NOT butt your cigarettes on the ground. Either carry a portable butt bin or stick it in your pocket. The world is not your ashtray. FYI: Filters on cigarettes take approximately 5 years to bio-degrade if not more and a single cigarette butt contaminates over 40 litres of water to the point where small creatures start to die.

Don’t be a Tosser-Butt it and Bin it (or tuck it in your socks what ever works for you).

• Ostara is not a licensed event so please bring your own alcohol. If you drink alcohol - drink responsibly and feel free to share with any frazzled looking event organiser. We’ll be the ones wearing Bob the Builder stack hats for easy identification.

• Water availability on site can be an issue, its all tank water and the creek is undrinkable, so we recommend you bring a supply of your own drinking water.

• Ostara is a NO GLASS event for safety reasons.

• No dogs permitted on site.

• No renegade sound systems permissable on site otherwise these will be confiscated and returned at the end of the festival.

• Please be considerate towards your neighbouring campers. Keep stereo sound systems on LOW during during the night.

• “Ostara Festival” does not condone the use and abuse of illicit substances. Unsocial behaviour will NOT be tolerated and offenders will be asked to leave.

• Ostara is an all ages event. Have respect for self and others around you and please look after your friends and each other and be aware when small children are around.

• BYO drums, musical instruments of your choosing. We encourage everyone to share their musical talents whether that be contributing towards a drumming circle or jamming sessions with others (but only if you are good).

• Fire twirling permitted but only in designated areas and as per above - only if you are good. BYO fuel.

• We encourage you all to have an awesome time over the Ostara weekend:-

- participate in the workshops and talks we provide if you can or conduct one of your own. Ostara offers an open forum for people to share their knowledge and skills with others.

- bring your positive energy with you and be part of a gathering of like minded individuals who have a passion for music of all kinds.

- Pet pigs most welcome- there will be a pig throat singing workshop on Sunday morning!

And most important of all, the owners of the site will be checking in throughout the course of the weekend so please be mindful of your surroundings and actions as any infringements will jeopardise further use of this site.

Phewy – I think that’s all for now!!! See you NEXT WEEK (my edit- dan)!!!
SoulWhiteMan wrote:Hi there Ulyssian,

Gates open from 5pm Friday 18th September and will remain open right through till the end of the event on Sunday 20st.

The road in and out of Opoeia/Sokil are solid enough to not get bogged if you drive with care.

Please please PLEASE I ask everyone to take extra caution when driving through Breakfast Creek road as it can get a little slippy.

RACV service at close call should you have any problems.

Hope this answers your question.
I will be releasing set times as well as workshop timetable additional to what I communicated above.

Thanks everyone. Not long now!!!

DO'S AND DONT'S .........................

Image

The Ostara Festival crew have made a commitment this year to the environmental and social sustainability of the event and to achieve our aims we need your help. Following is a list of tips and hints that will help us all to have a fun filled, stress free and earth conscious weekend (woo-hoo, bring it on  )

Please take note and communicate this to all of your friends who are attending as some of these points require consideration and preparation before leaving on your travels.

First and foremost …….

• Ostara Festival is a camping event - please pack your tents and camping gear ….. of course!

PLEASE CARPOOL where possible not only to reduce carbon emissions but to also reduce the number of cars that enter onto the site - for the courageous and adventurous feel free to consider riding your bike or planning an elephant convoy (please note only limited elephant parking will be provided and you will need to bring your own feed).

PLEASE NOTE: We have been warned that any cars parked around the perimeter of the Sokil site (including along the entrance road), will be towed away. So unless you’re happy to assist the Surf Coast Shire to increase council budgets this year we suggest avoiding parking along Breakfast Creek Road.

Drive carefully and sensibly especially around the neighbouring towns as you’re heading towards and leaving Sokil. Please also be warned that the road heading towards Aireys Inlet from the site is currently in very bad condition.

The road into the site is extremely treacherous especially in wet weather. Local traffic police will be patrolling the roads and are known to make speeding festival goers crawl on hands and knees for the rest of their journey.

Pack LOTS of warm clothing and wet weather gear should it rain. It gets incredibly cold up in the Otways. Be prepared for all weather conditions. There will be some indoor heated areas, as well as a number of fires around the main site but it still gets rather chilly!!! If you do find yourself feeling cold we recommend you give someone a hug - group hugs are especially effective.

• We request that everyone pack plates, cups and cutlery in order to help reduce waste over the course of the weekend. Our caterers will be supplying a very limited amount of disposable plates/cups/cutlery (a washing up area will be provided).

• We ask that you please take your rubbish home with you. We will provide plastic bags for your non-recyclable and recyclable waste upon entry but please pack additional just in case. If you’re not going to use it or you can’t take it home with you please don’t bring it (that includes couches, trampolines and grannies chaise lounge).
Ostarians found leaving piles of rubbish at their campsite will be required to clean the main dance floor of cigarette butts with a pair of tweezers!

When using the onsite facilities please be mindful that water is precious, flush the loo when necessary.

• Ostara is a NO GLASS event for safety reasons.

No dogs permitted on site.

No renegade sound systems permissible on site otherwise these will be confiscated and returned at the end of the festival (please respect this request as we don’t like having to be grumpy)

• Please be considerate towards your neighbouring campers. Keep stereo sound systems on LOW during the night- or preferably turn them off and head down to the dance floor for some wicked class tunes.

• “Ostara Festival” does not condone the use and abuse of illicit substances. Unsocial behaviour will NOT be tolerated and offenders will be asked to leave.

• Ostara is an all ages event. Have respect for yourself and others around you and please look after your friends and each other and be mindful of your behaviour when children are around.

- bring your positive energy with you and be part of a gathering of like minded individuals who have a passion for music of all kinds.

- Pet ostriches are most welcome- there will be an inaugural ostrich race on Sunday morning!

And most important of all, the owners of the site will be checking in throughout the course of the weekend so please be mindful of your surroundings and actions as any infringements will jeopardise further use of this site.

Phewy – I think that’s all for now!!! See you all next Friday!!! (Shit - is it really next Friday???)

Hi guys,

Erika here using SoulWhitMan's login!

With regards to showers on site - due to expected numbers for this year's festie and in an effort to minimise usage of tank water on site, there will be no showers - or at least hot ones - available. Apologies to have to take this step, but we all know how precious water is these days in particular at Sokil Eco Arts Retreat.

Once again I remind you, please BYO drinking water and especially your own cups/plates/cuttlery to use when ordering food from our caterers!

Many thanks all and see you in a few days!!!

DAVE PHAM
http://www.myspace.com/davepham

Dave Pham began chasing his musical aspirations by collecting vinyl in the early nineties. This collection merely began as Dave couldn't quite find the music he sought after on any other format. For many years he only had the use of a very primitive stereo and one rather beaten up old turntable. After befriending a local Dj who lent Dave his decks, Dave began his mixing expedition and never looked back. Over 10 years have past, and since these humble beginnings Dave Pham has become on of Australia's most sought after Techno and Electro artists.

At first Dave made his name in the techno world, choosing to play harder, noisier and more challenging sounds than his pears. This remains Dave's preference to this day and he always draws a crowd of fans who go there to hear what amazing tracks he will pull from his bag of tricks. Since 2000, Dave has been experimenting with crossing Techno with other genres of music such as Electro and Experimental sounds and although the ride was rough with fans at the beginning, the new style he was playing soon began to draw even a larger crowd.

In 2007 Dave is now received by audiences, other Deejay's and promoters as being the most versatile Deejay around who is perfect for support, or main act, and can set the tone of the whole night.

Dave has supported the likes of Dave Clarke, Luke Slater, Jeff Mills, Fumiya Tanaka, Richie Hawtin, Vitalic, Miss Kittin & the Hacker, David Caretta, Dj Sneak, Tiga, Felix tha Housecat, Phoenecia, Richard Devine, Kiko, Nathan Fake, Trentemoller, and Derrick May to name a few.

PLANET JUMPER aka Ford and Schapper.
http://www.myspace.com/fordandschapper

Planet Jumper aka Ford and Schapper's sound combines the various and varied interests the two of them possess to create dance music that everyone can shake to. Fusing low slung disco, breaks, hip hop, house, rock, trance and of course funk, the music aims to be a highly percussive, groove based sound that moves between tempos, while always having one eye on the dance floor. Planet Jumper's live show which is often supported by the metronomic Richard Kelly and takes in a range of production from collaborators Henry Banks and Ed Lane, is a furious live remix mash of 35+ original compositions that changes quickly, but always ensures that the focus of the music is on the groove.

Formed out of a shared love of mid to late 70’s and early 80’s funk (Paliament Funkadelic, Zapp, Locksmith, The Bar Kays, Fatback Band etc) Ford and Schapper started writing together in 2005 after talking about it through many a useless afternoon. Once they got going, they decided that no amount of rudeness was too rude. They write rude tunes, for rude people who like to party and dance.

Both musicians/artists outside the group: Drew Schapper plays drums in the engaging psych/classical rock band “Artist Proof”, while Steve Ford has DJ’d all over Melbourne, regularly dropping his own production and edits, as well as the sounds of “Ford and Schapper” in his sets. Combining twisted basslines, eclectic samples and live drums and percussion, Ford and Schapper’s unashamedly sticky sound guarantee’s get down in all the right ways and areas.

OSTARA'S VJs ..............................

Image

VJ Inxile - (CH/Australia)
VJ Set and Visual Curator/co-ordinator
(Ostara production team 2009)

My aim is to abstract everyday life and reconstruct a universe permeable to the viewer’s own fantasies.
If a collective consciousness exists it is tainted by our very observation of it. I aspire to create images, which oscillate between the truth of our shared reality and the eccentricities of imagination. I use photography, animation, multimedia spatial installation and video as an expression of passion and rage. It is a rebellious act, a personal attempt to question the status quo.

My work is driven by a compulsion to capture beauty that defies conventional notions. I hope to uncover grace in triviality and portray the invisible movement present in every instant.

Born in Switzerland, with a background working in alternative contemporary art galleries and film festivals, later creating mixed visual dvds for clubs and techno music since 2003 i continue my artistic explorations at present in Melbourne by refining my curatorial and vjing skills. I’ve been performing live since 2008, increasingly, vjing now weekly with local, national and international dj’s, electronic music producers and live bands in clubs, warehouse/private parties, outdoor music events and art festivals. My approach to vjing is playful and intuitive. I strive on interaction with the musicians-dj/and the audience using either some live feed or mixing video loops feat. the dj’s/crew or people of the audience or known/recognized objects or places relevant, relative to the event itself or exploring unusual ways of vjing aiming to create an happening . Trying to read/tap into the collective energies of the dancefloor, i mix spontaneously video loops in real time and to the beat(hand-sync), aiming to flow with the music. I use foremost my own video/stills/animation collection with a fascination of numbers/alphabets/words aswell as human beings/bodies, urban/landscapes and rotating spheres.i remix also obscure/obsolete video content from old vhs tapes, discarded bad movies or randomly collected or donated films and images.

Vjing and curating multi-media projection events such as Opening of Gertrude St projections Fest.2009, Sensory Overload for the first Gertrude St Projection Festival 2008, Digital Rehab, Renaissance Festival 2008. Active Arts Hope st Events, she’s been performing live, as a vj, every week since winter 2008, vjing with local, national and international dj’s, electronic music producers and live bands. (Mike Shannon, Becker, Spoonbill, Mauxam, Bluetech, Alexander Robotnick, TLR, Deadbeat, SCSI-9, Magik Johnson, Ganga Giri, Su Musica Su Movimiento, Forty6&Two, Mo Ichi, Gavin Keitel, Mike Callander, Jonny Mac, D-Rektional, Sun Project Spieces, Aaron Smiles, Phil K, Rif Raf, Danny Bonnici, Don Peyote, Suseri, D-Rektional, Continuum live!, Interpulse, Agent 86, Logan Baker, Adam Askew, Kojiro Ota, Baron von Rotton, Citizen, Matty Blades, Deviant, Dave Pham, Dub the magic Dragon, Barons of Tang, Bass Bin Laden, Brock Ferrar, Bean, Monkey Marc, Dr Hysteric, Ramos, Not Happy Jan, Nicolas Jouin, Sun Monx, Dj Muska, Timmus, Mr Nice, NAble and many others ....

Alongside my vj practice, i’m currently creating visuals for music releases on record labels and for dvd compilations aswell as creating/organising projection installations in collaboration with sculptors, decor, performance artists and other vj’s. For more infos ** pls email: [email protected]

(Mexico/Australia)

I have been working as a Vj since 2002, mostly at electronic music festivals and a few multimedia conventions, a few to name are Goa Sounds Festival Mexico, Nagisa Music Fesival Tokyo&Osaka 2007, Earthdance 2005-2009. My set consists of Highly emotive video loops, combined with a lot of technology, cgi, and Japanese style animations. I usualy record my own videos/loops from trips overseas or interesting locations/videos, and have a nice collection of loops that ive acquired by meeting and "trading" with other Vj Artists and collaborating together... everything you see on the screen is mixed live and in sync with the music being played on the stage, and i try to match the emotions of the music with my video performance.

SOULWHITEMAN

SoulWhiteMan began DJing after developing an interest in breakbeat music early in the decade.
After gaining his first gig at 33 1/3 NYD in 2005, he began developing an interest in the more progressive sounds of breakbeat which lasted years until the various deeper sounds of 4/4 music began to take his fancy.
Expect to hear a variety of deep grooves in his set at Ostara festival 2009.
