Fun In The Murky / Bleep Radio

Post by Andrez »

I'm going to start up a new thread here for Canada's Trevor Wilkes and his Fun in the Murky (http://www.fun-in-the-murky.com/mt/) and Bleep Radio (http://www.fun-in-the-murky.com/Bleep_Radio/) exploits. It'll also stop me cluttering up the forum with individual threads! ;)

The guy deserves the attention - over the past couple of years his site has featured some brilliant DJ and live mixes from the likes of Neil Landstrumm, Dave Tarrida, Bill Youngman, Luke's Anger, Paul Birken, Mark Hawkins, Cari Lekebusch, Joel Mull, Edmx, Si Begg, Tobias Schmidt, DMX Krew, Chris Sattinger, etc, etc.

It's also updated regularly and includes reviews and mp3 previews of classic vinyl as well as new releases.

Here's Trevor's own latest mix, unveiled today, to give you a wee bit of an insight into what to expect there. Enough rambling from me, as well.

Bleep Radio 194: Trevor Wilkes
Aired: January 6th, 2010

"The bag of mostly harder stuff was put to the side for one week. I had received a package in the mail and you all know what that means. Or, at least you can guess. The stuff had to be played. In the end this set only has 4 of the new records in it, but they're good 'uns."

Signals From Southwark 10:
Mark Hawkins' Subhead and Related Mix[/B]

The duo known as Subhead are responsible for giving me a taste of something that I hadn't known existed. This is Mark's set though so I'll let him do the talking...

Image

"Subhead was a big big influence on my early work - Ctrl Alt Delete definitely has a bit of Subheads 11 and 18 in there. I first discovered them in 1996, and straight away they sounded original and unique, like the real embodiment the much touted techno ethic of sounding like "nothing you ever heard before" whilst enduring a real punk rock aesthetic. They were the first producers that I ever met who's attitude, instead of holding back all but what they considered the very best of their material, was "put it all out - even if you don't like it, someone else will!" - Not that you could really tell that by listening to their stuff. Often the reason why you might at first think a track is a dud was because you just didn't get it!"

Here's some more fresh off the boat...

Signals from Southwark 11:
Mark Hawkins

This week we're going a bit harder than usual - a mix inspired by the kind of stuff I was playing in the mid to late 90s at outdoor parties, so it's a bit of a nostalgia trip... There area few newer pieces in there also, such as the Electric Kettle track, and I'm also warming you up for Scott Robinson's forthcoming live showcase, in preparation for our gig at the WMF in Berlin on 22nd of February, with two trax from his Debut release on Cluster which really hailed the arrival of the third wave of UK techno...

Luke's Anger:
Hardware Live Set (V.2)

Image

"A short while back Luke had a hardward performed liveset available for download on his new site, but it was short lived. Knowing full well he could improve upon it he took it down and got back to work on a new version. That's what we have to check out today!"

This is brilliant; I had a listen twice yesterday. Preparation set, apparently, for his set at the next BLOC party. The guy seriously rocks in my book.

MARK HAWKINS, ### INTERVIEW

Image

I just completed this exceptionally lengthy fireside chat for the site; in case you don't know Hawkins, he's unleashed his stuff via labels like Pro-Jex, Djax-Up-Beats, Neue Heimat, Mosquito, Victim, Kitty Corner and Snork Enterprises, and up till recently ran his own cool label Crime.

Here's a taster:

"There're probably taboos in regard to good taste - I mean I wouldn't go sampling from a speech by Hitler or anything like that as I think you'd be really playing with fire on that one, plus the fact that you'd run the risk of some Far Right lunatics getting into your music - but sacrilegious? I don't know - I think pretty much everything is fair game so long as it's not in extremely bad taste. I always thought cover versions of stuff originally performed by, say, Hendrix or Janis Joplin, a real waste of time - you're just going to show off your short-comings - unless it was like when Mike Flowers Pop covered Oasis' 'Wonderwall'... Although I think Oasis are pretty rubbish, to be honest. Music for people who aren't really interested in music." (laughs.)

Edmx Podcast 15

Image

This time the show is a bit different. Instead of listening to records, we take a trip to my studio and make a track on some old synths and stuff in under 90 minutes.

Ed takes what could potentially be an hour of boring and random noises and instead walks us through the creation of a track. You will enjoy this show.

Si Begg
"The Bleeps"

Mutate 06

"I don't normally post too much Si Begg, but this one I enjoyed a bit of. The Original mix and the Shades of Rhythm remix will most likely get some air time from me. I had high hopes for the Unique 3 remix, but I feel it came off sounding too modern housey."

FUNK GADGET
"BLAH BLAH REMIXES EP"
Slidebar 03

"The third Slidebar just so happens to be remixes of a track knocked together by Andrez Bergen (aka Funk Gadget). His original and the Birken mix are the ones I'm grooving to, I'm sure the other ones - while not my cup of tea -- are going to be equally appreciated by people with tastes other than what I have."
