autotune

Post by deviant »

WTF is everyone on?

Does anyone actually think it sounds good??????

I listened to JJJ's "top 10 Dance-hall tunes of 2009" on the Weekend... holy fuck it was horrible... Autotune on EVERY tune. Some guys could plainly and obviously not sing for shit, but then some had great voices and I just wanted the autotune off coz it wrecks the voice.

hate autotune... You could maybe do some interesting stuff.. like say, an autotuned theramin or something... but on vocals it is just yuck yuck yuck

love autotune, when it's done well. it is overused tho. in dancehall it is ubiquitous. it's being used less in hip-hop & R&b in the last 3-6 months tho...

i haven't listened to dancehall for the last couple of years as a result of the ludicrous overuse of autotune

each to their own though i guess, heaps of people must be digging it

can sound good if used in a subtle manner, but this cher style thing of the last 3 years is killing me. not a fan.

it kills me too. the woman who works in our staff shop is constantly listening to blaring crap R&B that has massive amounts of auto tune and it sounds horrible, just horrible. drives me insane, thankfully I'm only ever in there to pick up my drycleaning.

Triple J did a top 10 dancehall tunes of 2009??? does anyone at that station even really know what dancehall is?

I did a Top 20 Dancehall tunes of 2009 on PBS last Saturday, perhaps you got the stations confused...? only thing is, not every song had auto-tune on my countdown, though about a quarter did.

Jamaica has definitely gone auto-tune crazy in the last couple years. I used to hate it, but the truth is, I don't even notice it most of the time now. It still really bugs me when producers use it for singers like Michael Rose and Tarrus Riley (who can sing pitch-perfect anyway) but I've come to really like it when used well.

It's one of those classic trends where people get used to the sound of new technology, and all of a sudden it becomes a desired sound... other examples include vinyl hiss/crackle, tape distortion, samplers in the 80s (Two of hearts... I- I- I- I- I- I need- I need you)... I've even heard tracks that mimic CDs skipping or exploit extreme MP3 compression to make weird noises. Oh and let's not forget Lutzenkirchen's awesome track Lonely Phone Want to Speak... this actually made me laugh out loud the first time I heard it :)

Possibly the best use of autotune ever. Carl Sagan (eminent UK physicist) discussing the interconnectedness of all things and throwing gangsta arms-out moves that make T-Pain look, well, kinda FA1L.
