Help Haiti Benefit gig Sat Feb 20th

On January 12th, the worst earthquake in 200 years - 7.0 in magnitude - struck less than ten miles from the Caribbean city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which has claimed the lives of between 50,000 – 100,000 and has displaced another 300,000 Hatians.
I don't need to tell you that Haiti at the moment is as close as any of us are going to get to looking at Hell on Earth.
I can't even begin to imagine what it is like trying to live in a country where everything has broken down: and like the rest of us I watch helplessly as the TV news shows me more images of dead and injured human beings, starving children and a population on the edge of anarchy.
Those of you who live in Melbourne may be able to do something to help though, because Ghetto Kitty and a host of local Dj’s, performers and promoters are banding together to stage a special benefit night at Miss Libertine in the city on Saturday the 20th of February to raise funds for the victims of the disaster.

Join some of our favorite crews as they come together to donate their time and talents for this country in need. With a line up including
High society (Live on stage)
Nadee - Hatian Soul singer w live band
Pat Stormont (LIVE)
Youthful Implants featuring Priscilla (LIVE)
Matt Radovich (Melbourne Techno collective)
Dave Pham & U One (MISK)
citizen.com (Rock Like This)
Joe Seven & Dust (Polaroid)
Pat Tassone & Dean Benson (Overnoise)
The Alias & Brewster B (Diss you!)
Sizzle & TakaCo (5 Elements)
lil miSbreaks & Lilstormer,

Bass Bin Laden
Lou-is
and much much more….

100% of profits going to Oxfam International.

Saturday Feb 20th
6pm - late
Donation BBQ from 6pm
$10 entry (or more of you like!)
Miss Libertine 34 Franklin st CBD

There is a saying in dance music that ‘the shit stops when the needle drops’ and the scene is
littered with artists who wax lyrical about their own abilities but can’t mix a drink. Conversely, the
self confessed ‘shy guy’ Brewster B doesn’t say too much himself but he has let his music do all
the talking for 16 years and Australia has listened.
To stand out in the sea of DJs in club land you really have to do something different and
Brewster’s entire career has been characterised by being more than a little left of centre. Unlike
rockstar aspirants who bum-rush the main floor, Brewster started out playing ambient rooms at
‘Ye Olde Raves’, calming the nerves of the frazzled and merging everything from world music to
more psychedelic sounds that were making their way out of Goa hidden in the lining of hippy
suitcases.
When main rooms started their insatiable drive towards harder music, it opened up the field for
forward thinking musicians such as Brewster. There was now a massive musical patch for him to
explore between Whale music and Hard Trance and just like the British Colonials in India he
exploited the patch to the full, pushing breaks up behind chords and injecting a lethal dose of flat
out funk directly into the heart of the chill out room.
Much to the disgust of the main room bangers, Brewster was crafting an atmosphere to equal the
main rooms. Instead of muscle marys with their shirts off there were hip cats with their heads
down, shuffling to everything from dubbed out reggae and only the most acceptable strains of 2-
step. Just like the DJ delivering the tunes, the crowd had no attitude and was musically open
minded so it was only a matter of time before the breaks scene exploded and when it did,
Brewster was leading the pack.
Widely regarded as one of the hardest working DJs in Australia, Brewster has combined his
regular club gigs with interstate and international bookings, as well as his radio show, ‘Living in a
Weird World’ which received its name thanks to Andy Van and the typical musical narrow
mindedness that Brewster loathes. From Monday to Sunday, the man has had his head in his
music and it is only lately that he has begun to reap the rewards he deserves such as the TRM
‘Quiet Achiever’ Award which he won along with luminaries such as MJ Cole, Roland,
Bushwacka! And The Plump DJs.
16 years down the track, Brewster is one of the few constant figures on the underground roster
and has the enviable position of closing the now infamous 33 1/3 parties as well as playing
almost every big gig from Vibes on a Summer’s Day to the Big Day Out. There are a number of
very good reasons why people in the know put their trust in Brewster but it basically comes down
to one very rare trait – He’s no rockstar. On a personal level he’s humble but on a musical level
he’s not so far up his own arse that he’ll lose the floor while jetting away on some obscure
musical tangent. As the man himself says, “I want people to hear me play records” and with that
in mind he finds a brilliantly accessible patchwork of steppy breaks, ragga, drum n bass & Electro
twisted beats and basically anything that will achieve his goal. No tags to narrow his selection, no
bullshit to cloud your opinions, – Just wicked grooves from one of the best in the game.

Dave Pham began chasing his musical aspirations by collecting vinyl in the early nineties. This collection merely began as Dave couldn’t quite find the music he sought after on any other format. For many years he only had the use of a very primitive stereo and one rather beaten up old turntable. After befriending a local Dj who lent Dave his decks, he began his mixing expedition and never looked back. Over 10 years have past, and since these humble beginnings Dave Pham has become on of Australia’s most sought after artists.

At first Dave made his name in the techno world, choosing to play harder, noisier and more challenging sounds than his pears. This remains Dave’s preference to this day and he always draws a crowd of fans who go there to hear what amazing tracks he will pull from his bag of tricks. Since 2000, Dave has been experimenting with crossing Techno with other genres of music such as Electro and Experimental sounds and although the ride was rough with fans at the beginning, the new style he was playing soon began to draw even a larger crowd.

With over 10 years at the helm, Dave is now received by audiences, other Deejay’s and promoters as being the most versatile performer around who is perfect for support or main act, and can set the tone of the whole night.

Catch Dave every Thursday at Misk (Miss Libertine),Saturday nights at New Guernica and watch out for him headlining the next Likes Of You event!

Citizen.com began his DJ career in Melbourne in early 2000 playing Break-beat at 3D Nightclub it was not long before he was supporting the like’s of Koma and Bones at Melbourne’s Premier Breaks Night, Fractured at Brown Alley as a resident. No small feat for a relative newcomer to the scene.
Citizens’ early success and obvious talent saw him win first prize in one of Melbourne’s most respected DJ competitions and place second in an Earthcore competition. Citizens’ evolution continued with his involvement in the production of the Fractured, Rock like this, Darkbeat and Soft Spot events becoming more prominent.

In 2006 Citizen answered the calling, abandoned his ambitions as a Biological Scientist to concentrate fulltime on DJing, event production, management and music production. This proved a wise move with 2008 seeing the launch of Citizens hugely successful break-beat weekly BASS CAMP at the Lounge. BASS CAMP has attracted international Breakbeat legends including Baobinga & ID, Groove Diggerz, Friendly and JHz. As well as having the local and interstate guests routinely destroy the dance floor. They asked for it and they are going to get it! 2009 will see the first BASS CAMP mix CD released, original tunes from the BASS CAMP family (International/Interstate and local producer’s) check www.lounge.com.au for more info.

In 2010 you will find Citizen.com as Marketing and Promotions Manager at the LOUNGE NIGHTCLUB. He is also part owner of Rock Like this Productions, and creator of Soft Spot Productions. He also manages to juggle several side projects including Daredevils and Roxy Moron. As well as working with Metty Blades, Good Groove records. And even better, his production team ‘ Rock Like This’ have also paired up with massive Break beat label “Against the Grain” to present some of the biggest break beat parties Melbourne has ever seen. Rock Like This and
Citizenn.com have supported the likes of, Stanton Warriors, Deekline and Wizzard, Drumattic Twins, Elite Force, NAPT, Skool of Thought, Rennie Pilgrem, Boogie Army, as well as many other breaks internationals.
Amongst all the madness Citizen manages to hold the fort with residencies at Revolver Saturdays @ Late Show, Brown Alley Fridays @ Rock Like This and Against the Grain parties, Workshop Fridays @ Dropping Phat, Miss Libertine for ROCK LIKE THIS feature events, and many more.

Image

2005 welcomed Dean Benson (Deano) to the circuit. Showing promise from the first time he graced the decks, he shortly gained much deserved respect and now 4 years later this kid is rolling alongside the biggest names in the business, supporting- Richie Hawtin, Marc Romboy, Carl Craig, Stephen
Bodzin, Robert Babicz, Oliver Huntemann, Radioslave, Dusty Kid and many more.

Influenced by various artists which include: Dj Hell, Sven Vath & Guy J. Dean is able to adapt to many sub-genres of his beloved techno, enabling him to play at many diverse venues, events and festivals- ie. Future Music Festival, Kiss My Grass, Summerdayze and Trance Energy.
Your most likely to catch Dean Benson at "The Likes of You", and monthly Overnoise at Miss Libertine.

Image

In 2007, with the support and encouragement of the creative arts community she met in Melbourne, TakaCo began to practice the art of Turntablism. Since then, working as a scratch DJ/ Selector for Elf Tranzporter, performing in a wide variety of venues in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, she also had the privelige to travel Outback to conduct workshops and visit Aboriginal Communities in Aurukun, Darwin, Garma and Alice Springs.
TakaCo looks forward to continuing work within Indigenous Communities and working with some of the organisations that are enthused about utiliizing her many skills. She is currently a resident DJ at 5 Elements, Miss Libertine's weekly hip hop night on wednesdays.

Image

Uone – BEEF records, Chameleon Recordings, Planetaria Recordings

Uone is striving to DJ and make a primal brand of deep and twisted dance music. Uone draws on elements from progressive, minimal, techno, and house, being not afraid to cross genres.
With an attitude that is constantly changing and ever eager to evolve , Uone's music remains on the underground. Uone is not that kind of artist who likes to hide behind the mixing-console performing isolated. It’s about his friendly and extroverted personality always trying to be as close as possible to the crowd constantly motivated to “rock the house” together. He is currently one of the musical minds behind MISK on thursdays at Miss Libs, as well as about to host SEPH live for LAB on feb 12th.

Image

yoink! is bumping juicy tropical bass, pumping geometric freak-core, cosmic booty-trance and wampalicious afro-tech shockouts. blazing rainbow fire through electrical snakes, mingling far flung music from speakers in far flung places, and imagining sounds the na'vi would rave to in their UV jungle parties.

Image

DJ Dust has been making waves around the Melbourne scene for nearly 8 years now and is one of the scenes most established players.
Humble beginnings playing hip hop and drum and bass monthly at Black Cat and a residency at the Lounge and her flawless and highly technical approach to mixing led to Dust supporting some of the biggest names in drum and bass and dubstep to grace our shores including Marky, Storm, Marcus Intalex, Doc Scott, Calibre, Klute, Grooverider, Hudson Mohawke, Joker, Skream and Benga and Headhunter.
Her consistency was rewarded with worldwide recognition by the organisations Junglist Sistaz and Hardstep Sistaz, inclusion into the mighty Elementz Sound Collective and so many regular bookings that she was titled "Melbourne's First Lady of Drum and Bass" in a gig write-up.
Dust has run international events with Joe Seven for Klute, Storm, Calibre & Mark Pritchard, Doc Scott & Marcus Intalex and also promotes drum and bass night Polaroid with Joe Seven , Consequence and MC Lowqui and local hip hop night Anytime with Joe Seven and Dan Motive.
Current musical focus for DJ Dust is to diversify and that is what she has been doing. Recent sets from her have been varied to say the least and it’s not uncommon to hear drum and bass, dubstep, UK funky and techno all in the one set!
