ECHOES returns for its fifth installment at Loop celebrating the influence of Dub in electronic music.
Dub, developed originally in the late sixties focusing on the rhythmic parts of a Reggae recording, grew to be a genre on its own right that has literally shaken the world ever since. It was a powerful experiment that pushed the use of the mixing desk as an instrument and gave greater control to the sound engineer as a producer. It set the blueprint for much of the dance music that has followed.
ECHOES V5.0 will take you on a bass heavy journey from Kingston to Berlin via Detroit and London. For this edition, residents Matic and Mark Baumann will be joined by local heavy weight selectors Craig McWhinney and David Bass, plus visual artist Jem the Misfit, who will all be doing their debut at Echoes.
We'll apply some pressure to break the winter ice and stimulate your senses with upfront sounds and visuals. Dubwise!
Craig McWhinney – From his start as a dj to being an accomplished music producer and label owner, it’s clear that Craig’s career is constantly evolving. As one of the founding members of the Melbourne Techno collective, co-running Haul Music, promoting and djing at various parties, he is one of the key players in the current electronic scene in Melbourne.
Moving at ease between House and Techno on its many forms and bpms Craig is not only a very skilled and versatile dj but, as a producer, his tracks have been picked and played by many djs around the world. Expect a Dub journey of the highest quality.
David Bass – This dj, radio presenter and promoter is one of the headz playing a large part in establishing Dubstep in Melbourne. His dj skills and experience have been put to the test by supporting some of the big players in the genre like Ramadanman, Ikonika, Loefah and Kryptic Minds. As a member of the Too Much! crew, David knows his music and will bring a few secret weapons for his debut at Echoes. Feel the bass!
Jem the Misfit – This video artist has been splashing her unique blend of colour and tech across screens around Australasia for the last 4 years. Jem has produced solo video art projects that have screened in galleries and festivals around Melbourne and NZ and also has recently provided visuals for large-scale festivals Big Day Out, Creamfields and Splore (NZ).
Her visual style continues to evolve with every new site and sound. Expect a colourful mix of crisp graphic based animations and grungy textures with sets that are energetic yet carefully crafted to bring audio to life.
