ALEX KID (France / F Comm / Rekkids)

From roots in early nineties Parisian rave culture, this multi instrumentalist, composer, remix artist, DJ and sound engineer has set on a formidable trajectory since Laurent Garnier invited him to put out his debut single, ‘Playground’, in 1997.

Alongside definitive producers like St.Germain and Mr.Oizo, Alexkid spent many years as a flagship artist for Garnier’s F Communications label, playing a pivotal role in sculpting the profile of French electronic music both at home and abroad while developing his own inimitable identity.

With a collaboration with Berlin minimal troupe M.A.N.D.Y in the works, latest releases and remixes on Rekids, Cadenza, Cabin Fever and NRK, forthcoming releases planned on labels such as Jimpster's Freerange, combined to his multiple tours and dates, Alex takes no rest... « Sleep is for the weak... »

ANTIX / FIORD (NZ / Iboga)

Image

Brothers, studio partners and seasoned producers whose achievements to date encompass 4 albums, a fruitful international touring career and an array of heavyweight productions spread across their three monikers Antix, Fiord and Triangle.

Hailing from New Zealand with a musical background rich with influences from Ritchie Hawtin to Rhythm and Sound, Barton and Hayden have such a plethora of inspiration.
It is indisputable that the quality of their music simply demands your attention. On their musical quest they continue to push new boundaries, mesmerizing audiences worldwide.

D-NOX (Germany / Sprout Music, Electribe)

Image

This guy is German. He really is, trust me! Looking at his tour calendar, you wouldn`t know it. Because D-Nox spends more time abroad, captivating huge crowds worldwide with his genre defying sets between Techno, Electro and Progressive House, than in his motherland.
About 95 percent of the time he is busy somewhere between Mexico, Israel, China, Australia, Russia, Japan or God knows where. Often playing in front of 20,000 or more party-goons at the most renowned venues. Has this man forgotten about his roots, neglected his heritage? Certainly not, but D-Nox is simply one of the top Export-Acts of his own country.

DIE VOGEL (Germany / Pampa Records)

Image

Brass techno? Gypsy house? And gets played by sven vath? All things that are true about Die Vogel, one of Germans most peculiar producers du jour...Die Vögel (German for The Birds) is a collaborative project between Jakobus Siebels and Mense Reents. Jakobus is an innovative multi-instrumentalist who has previously recorded distinctive albums for Tomlab, Chicks On Speed Records, Karaoke Kalk; the no less talented Reents is a member of the groups Egoexpress, Die Goldenen Zitronen and Stella, and operates the Art Blakey Studios in Hamburg, where their first EP, "Blaue Moschee", on Pampa Records, was recorded.

DUNKELBUNT (Austria, Piranha)

Image

dunkelbunt aka Ulf Lindemann surely counts among the most influential global beat troubadours of the early 21st century. Not only is he known for his work as a composer, producer, DJ, radio editor and multi-instrumentalist, but also for his exquisit remixes of and cooperations with international artists such as Balkan Beat Box, Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Boban Markovic Orkestar, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Watcha Clan, Harry Stoijka, 17Hippies and Waldeck, just to name a few.

FRIVOLOUS (Canada / Berlin / Cadenza, Minibar)

Image

Classifying the unusual character of Daniel Gardner is a challenge. His school-teachers all tried and failed and finally attributed his unconventional ways to a learning disability which was never formally diagnosed. Born and raised on a farm in isolated rural Canada, disassembling appliances and building strange gadgets were the only past-times that garnered young Gardner’s full attention until one semester a mysterious new course emerged into his stale and traditional school curriculum; Electronic Music Composition. Suddenly discovered, were honor roll grades, and a means to merge an imaginative young mind with over a decade of fiercely enforced classical piano training.
"Frivolous is the imaginary personification of my obsession with sound-design for both dancing and living alike." Manifesting in a multitude of performances and recorded works, my sound has been described as Jazz-infused minimal or experimental house. Now with more than 40 releases and over a dozen 12"s to his name, Frivolous has toured the globe playing an eclectic array of venues and festivals along the way.

HERMITUDE (Blue Mountains, Elefant Traks)

Image

Hermitude formed in 2001 with the musical partnering of Blue Mountains lads Luke Dubs (Luke Dubber) and Elgusto (Angus Stuart). They’d performed in jazz and funk bands together since 1994 (Dubs was 16 and Elgusto was just 11) as well as in the live hip hop of Explanetary (featuring a younger Urthboy) ,who released the In On the Deal EP with Elefant Traks in 2001. Hermitude had established their reputation for brilliant studio productions with an engaging and innovative live show – incorporating a confident, almost effortless musicianship with a deft grasp of technology.

OPIUO (Addictech)

Ok now, imagine if you will, a precisely blended concoction of tight irresistible grooves, chunk fueled bouncy beats, luscious brooding soundscapes, dollops of stomach morphing bass, and a bowl of scrumptious glitch. Welcome to the musical world of Opiuo. The highly sought after Opiuo sound is being included in DJ sets from some of the biggest names in the business, and featuring on high profile radio stations, including the infamous BBC Radio One (UK). SPOONBILL (Omelette Records)

Image

Spoonbill began, as is often the case with birds of play, in the bush. What started as a love of the drums progressed to percussion, and finally settled into a love of electronic production. Nowadays Spoonbill is a high flying eagle of the Australian electronic music scene, his label Omelette wave the flag for some of the most eclectic glitched out music known to modern man. Since the Spoon conception, he has played countless live shows across the world, from San Francisco’s Symbiosis to Nevada’s Burningman Festival, Berlins Fusion Festival, Glade festival in the UK and so on. THE BAMBOOS (Melbourne, Live 8 piece funk extravaganza)

Image

The Bamboos are generally acknowledged as Australia’s greatest modern Funk & Soul band. Emerging from the ‘Deep Funk’ scene of the early 2000’s, The Bamboos have since forged a unique sound of their own, combining elements of Old-School Funk, Hip Hop, Mod Rock, Psychedelic & Northern Soul. The 8-piece line-up led by guitarist Lance Ferguson and featuring the power-house vocals of Kylie Auldist are renowned for their blistering, high energy live sets which have kept people dancing all the way from Byron Bay to Bratislava. Their four studio albums and one live album for U.K label Tru Thoughts have earned them a place in the very upper echelon of the worldwide contemporary Funk & Soul scene.

TICON (Sweeden / Iboga Records)

Image

The Ticon grooves comes from Filip Mårdberg and Fredrik Gilenhol. The story of their musical involvement dates long back as they in 1991 found the mutual interest for underground dance music and became friends. It didn`t take long before they both started to dream about making this music themselves and with an Amiga 500 they were on the go....Many moons later and the boys have released 5 albums, over 14 EPs and have been included in countless compilations. Their unique style crosses the lines between trance, psy, progressive and crossover excursions into clubbier sounds.

TIJUANA CARTEL (QLD)

Image

hey hail from the Gold Coast, but Tijuana Cartel have built a firm reputation for beats that span the globe. Multi-layered grooves, touches of slide and flamenco guitar, trumpet, Vocals and Afro Cuban Percussion mixed with some hardened electronica – it’s a combo that’s intriguing, energetic and utterly delicious! Re: Shine On Festival 2011

Post by chestwig »

Second round....Shine On Festival is super excited to announce one of our most anticipated headliners for 2011....

Shapeshifter (Live, New Zealand)

Image

Fresh from 6 months in their Berlin studio and triumphant performances around Europe and at this year’s UK Glastonbury and Big Chill Festivals, Platinum selling Kiwi superstars SHAPESHIFTER bring their explosive and exceptional live show to Shine On!

With skills honed over four albums and countless sold-out shows, SHAPESHIFTER have consolidated their monstrous live grooves and command their audiences to shake along their heavy soul.

The UK, France, Holland, Germany and New Zealand have all been caught up in the SHAPESHIFTER storm and now it is our turn. Having smashed most of the major festivals including Parklife and Big Day Out, New Zealand’s Best Live Act will light up our stages this summer.

Heyoka (Live, San Fran)

Image

Heyoka AKA Andrei Olenev is a cosmic auditory scientist found in the Bay Area noosphere, who has been blowing minds with his sonic manipulations.
Multi Music first released Heyoka’s “Space Case EP” in 2008 and included him on their growing roster of talented artists. His albums ‘Whomp Gland & Pineal Dub’, ‘Gate Code’ and the all new ‘Marklar’ album in 2010 have shown that he is a producer consistently evolving his musical style while managing to maintain a signature sound that is distinctively ‘Heyoka’.His early influences in Downtempo, Dub and IDM combined with midtempo dancefloor genres have helped create a very unique sound that combines relentless basslines, hip hop rhythms, dub vibes, and musicality and melody, all within an atmosphere of heavy psychedelia and alien dimensions. The response to his emergence so far has been overwhelming with Heyoka developing audiences and playing festivals from US to Canada and Australia. For a mind bending experience in dub inspired Glitch Hop.

Diafrix

Image

DIAFRIX – multi-genre duo, community activists, habitual chillers and one of the most exciting and refreshing bands in the Australian musical landscape. The group – born from the Melbourne suburb of Footscray - comprises of two frontmen, Momo and Azmarino, both of whom are African refugees but have lived through struggles which are worlds apart. Their acclaimed debut album Concrete Jungle – an eclectic concoction of socially aware yet accessible hip-hop, reggae, funk and African sounds – an effort the boys were rewarded with by winning Best Homegrown New Artist in the coveted Age EG Awards in 2009.
In recent times, they have returned to the festival circuit, rocking huge crowds at Pyramid Rock, Hot BBQ, Sound Safari, Peats Ridge, Good Vibrations and Sydney Music Festival, whilst becoming a reliable go-to act for high profile support slots for major acts including B.O.B and Lupe Fiasco. Combined with supporting the likes of Bruno Mars, Tinie Tempah and George Clinton within the first 4 months of the year and heading to perform at the UK’s biggest music festival Glastonbury in June, the group’s star is quickly rising, and will only accelerate with the release of the sophomore album Pocket Full Of Dreams, which is currently being recorded across three continents and scheduled for release in Spring.

DJ Wasabi

Image

Wasabi's first professional dj gig was when he was just 14 with Elf Tranzporter who also still perform together today. He was quickly introduced to scratching and took a break from producing to mastermind his new electronic addiction. Twelve years later and Wasabi is known worldwide as one of Australia’s tightest and most prolific turntabilists. Wasabi’s much sought after DJ skills have landed him gigs djing for internationals like Kool Kieth and Australia’s highest regarded hip hop acts Ozi Batla (Elefant Tracks), Mantra (Obese Records), Combat Wombat (Elefant Traks) and has just been enlisted by Pegz the godfather of ozhiphop and owner of Obese Records.

Heart Tribe

Image

Heart Tribe are a slammin' live dance band with spicy world flavours hailing from Bellingen, NSW. Their fresh sound, tight improvisatory style and unique tempo changes always keep their audiences on their toes. One of Australia’s great emerging dance acts, they are best experienced in the flesh, their explosive energy, soaring lyrics and love of music unites them with the dancing audience as they take each other higher. “Their use of non-traditional instruments like slide didgeridoo, Middle-Eastern zither and Japanese bamboo flute makes them stand out from other bands” - Rave Magazine.

Happy vibes + slammin' organic beats with reggae and electro flavours + beautiful world instruments + soaring vocals and seriously dubby effects = Dancing like crazy clowns to the freqed out sound!

Husky (Melbourne)

Image
Melbourne four-piece Husky will release their debut album, Forever So, in October, 2011. Forever So is a rich and layered collection of songs, recorded in a rustic Northcote bungalow and mixed in Los Angeles at House of Blues Studios with Noah Georgeson (Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, the Strokes). Husky won Triple J Unearthed to play the Push Over Festival and their single, History’s Door, has been on high rotation on Triple J and Fbi radio as well as doing the rounds on community radio nationally. They have recently signed to Liberation and Mushroom Music Publishing.

Richard Kingsmill (Triple J) speaking about History’s Door: "This is pure class. A near perfect song that I will score 5/5"

Husky have recently toured nationally with Jinja Safari and supported both Noah and the Whale and Devendra Banhart. They will be supporting Kimbra nationally in September, weeks before the release of Forever So.

Joelistics (Elefant Traks)

Image

Joelistics up in sydney, the offspring of a chinese-australian father and an anglo-australian mother, playing drums in punk and funk groups, but drawn to hip hop with its outspoken politics and ad hoc sonic cannibalism. In 2002 he founded TZU alongside Count Bounce, Yeroc and Pasobionic, signing to Liberation records the same year. After three ambitious records, multiple awards (AMP, J Award) nominations, countless festivals and tours, TZU decided to take a breather. Joel embarked upon another voyage, living in Shanghai and Beijing; travelling through Mongolia; and eventually settling in Paris. Along the way began work on his debut solo album, Voyager. Armed with a laptop, he wrote all the music on old headphones whilst riding the Trans-Mongolian railway, transiting through airports; and a winter in of Paris. In 2010 he returned to Australia and moved between Sydney and Melbourne putting the final touches on the album, inking a deal with Elefant Traks in early 2011.

Pigeon (Brisvegas)

Image

'Pigeon' represent a meeting point of organic and electronic music to form a collaboration of genres from electro-pop and world music to drum 'n' bass and hip-hop. The aural palette of mind manipulating sound pleasure acts as a catalyst for a unique party atmosphere and will leave you craving a cigarette and a sleep. 2011 has seen Pigeon play a spot on the Mix Up Stage at Splendour in the Grass as well as being announced on the lineup of both the Brisbane leg of the Parklife tour and Port Macquaire’s Festival of the Sun. Pigeon also put out their second release “parallels” in August 2011, which debuted at #6 in the Australian iTunes Electronic Albums charts. The Brisbane band formed in early 2010 when a group of musicians sporting vastly differing musical backgrounds, joined forces to create an earful of tasty textural treats. Combining jazz musicians with electronic artists, DJ's and rock musicians, Pigeon are an eclectic treat for a new modern audience that crave diversity in every song.

Puta Madre Brothers

Image

Like nothing you’ve ever seen before; three dirt-faced gringo brothers from the bottom of the world (Melbourne, Australia), each strapped with a razor-edged guitar, a kick drum the size of a small car, and a donkey-load of foot percussion, summoning a drunken punch of mariachi rock n roll soul music, laying claim to be the world’s only surviving triple-one-man-band..., the world’s biggest one-man-band…

Possessing an innate ability to lock into rhythm and deliver their sonic party mayhem with astonishing mellifluous synchronization and skill, like an overloaded home-made taco, the group put on an intensely energetic and formidable live show which must be seen to be believed. Singing and wailing in poorly learned Spanish, smashing their guitar stocks against broken cymbals and each operating an array of instruments simultaneously, any other 3 men in the world would simply shatter to pieces attempting such a ridiculous yet incredible feat.

Sal Kimber & The Rollin' Wheel

Image

Sal Kimber has been quietly stealing hearts on Melbourne’s live music scene for the past five years, but it was in 2008 that she really found her niche in forming alt-country five-piece Sal Kimber & The Rollin' Wheel. Their exciting self-titled debut album was released in October, and the band has embarked on a nation-wide tour to promote their brand new tunes. With over 30 festivals under their belts, including Port Fairy Folk and Blue Mountains Music Festival, swags of rural and urban shows, and quick trip to Canada last year, they are brimming with excitement to share their new album and their engaging live sound.

Sietta

Image

Sietta are an electronic soul duo from Darwin, made up of producer/instrumentalist James Mangohig and
vocalist Caiti Baker. A chance meeting in Brisbane was the beginging of this musical partnership, Sietta's first official release was a remix for TZU’s Computer Love remix album, coming off the back of James’ role as bass player in the live band. Sietta cut their teeth on the road, supporting the live soul of Lowrider to the bass heavy electronics of Mark Pritchard, as well as festivals, showcases and headline shows across Australia. They began to establish themselves as an act that shines brightly alongside live bands or in an electronic setting.

In 2010 Sietta began work on their debut album with an inspired set of ideas leading Caiti’s powerful vocals and
James’ deep swinging electronic/hip hop production. Once again, Count Bounce (APRA and AIR Award winning, ARIA nominated) was brought in to record and assist with production. The sheer strength and texture of Caiti’s voice could easily be taken down a pop path, but Sietta felt at home in the depths of menacing electronic bass and drums, where beauty doesn’t mean picture-perfect; and lightness is never as illuminating as it is in blinding darkness. It’s in the refreshed imagining of dubstep and blues, hip hop and electronic soul that Sietta tackle themes of empowerment, love, hurt and mental health.

The Jungle Giants

Image

Beating a fast pace through the Australian music scene right now is Brisbane four- piece, The Jungle Giants. This indie pop quartet, in only eight shows and one EP, are impressing music industry pundits and music-loving audiences all over the country with their recklessly enjoyable and exuberant live show and songs with the depth and maturity of a band twice their age. At an average of 17.5, The Jungle Giants have already caught the eye of many impressive bands and artists including Hungry Kids of Hungary, Ball Park Music and The Medics. The band has also had props from the national youth broadcaster with their debut single, Mr Polite, being featured on Triple J Unearthed, No One Needs To Know receiving spot play, and their debut EP receiving a glowing review from Sarah Howells , Rosie Beaton and Dom Alessio. Now with 2011 at their feet, The Jungle Giants move into the next stage of their domination of the Australia music scene. Watch out for this rollicking, chaotic indie pop four-piece as they take over your radio and your hearts over the next 18 months.

The Sculla Mooks

Image

Melbourne based psy/dub/prog duo The ScullaMooks produce on-the-fly improvised brain melting psychedelia. Completely live and 100% improvised, The ScullaMooks are heading around the country at the moment wowing party-goers everywhere with something new ... fresh live psy, dub and prog played with real instruments - delectably danceable doof played completely ‘live’.

The Swiss

Image

The Swiss, are a legit live disco band who's existence is based entirely on flavour and good times. The Bubble Bath EP on Modular Recordings is testament to what lies at the core lifestyle of The Swiss: crisp and snappy drums, quicksand laser-sludge bass, dizzy pops & flourishes, melody rays and synthesised strings that glide on the thermal currents of life. It's as much a breathy telephone call as it is a mid-range Bordeaux shared between ensconced lovers. The Swiss' journey to the centre of 4/4 has so far not gone unnoticed. Erol Alkan, Annie Mac, Aeroplane & Sinden were instant fans when the Bubble Bath EP dropped after The Swiss’ signing to Modular. Both singles from the EP were added to national rotation on Triple J and Bubble Bath became a summer classic across
Europe, especially in Belgium. The Swiss have a lot to live up to when hitting the stage… and they deliver every time with a searingly hot, high energy, dynamic live show. And did we mention that they play real instruments?

The Woo Hoo Revue

Image

Call them what you will- 'Balkan gypsy brass band, roaring twenties swing ensemble, Wild West fiddle contest or a soundtrack for Looney Tunes'- it barely scratches the surface. There are few, if any parallels to the sound of The Woohoo Revue. This fiendishly talented sextet create an adrenalin-fuelled celebration fit for dancing, drinking, and ignoring tomorrow. The combination of absolute dance floor mayhem and a strong sense of old world style has inspired the Age Newspaper to describe The Woohoo Revue’s shows as ‘pandemonium in a pin striped suit’. Playing numerous festivals throughout the country including WOMADelaide, Woodford Folk Festival, Bellingen Global Carnival and Australasian World Music Expo. The Woohoo Revue’s debut album Dear Animals, (2008) has been hailed as a 'landmark documentation of Melbourne's 'gypsy' music scene' and attracted regular national radio play including Triple J.
