New in Melbourne - what upcoming bands to check out?

Post by Jakob_Skau »

Hi there,

My name is Jakob Skau, and I just moved to Melbourne from Denmark with two friends. We will be studying here for the spring semester, and meanwhile it would be cool to explore the music scene of this awesome city. However, the only Australian bands we know are The Presets, Empire of The Sun and Cut Copy - which we find pretty cool. Furthermore we have gathered, that gigs with big international names such as Coldplay, The Black Keys and Mumford and Sons are kind of expensive (especially because of the weak Euro). Hence, our questions are:

- Which upcoming bands do you guys reckon would be cool to check out live while living here? Would be good if tickets did not exceed 50 AUD (and preferably a fair bit below that amount).
- How can we focus (and ease) our search for interesting bands? Are there certain websites and certain venues we should keep an eye on etc?

Our taste in music in well reflected in the following bands: Band of Horses, Momford and Sons, Bob Dylan, Fleet Foxes, The Strokes, The Killers, The Editors, Queens of The Stonage, Bloc Party, Interpol, Kings of Leon, Foals Depeche Mode, Justice, Crystal Castles, Kanye West, Jay-Z etc. Pretty broad range of genres as you see!

We hope you guys, have some good recommendations. Cheers!
