these are all from my g10, mostly as shot:

it's a great little thing ... you do notice the weight difference between that and a true compact, but it's well worth it. the sensor could be a fair bit better (anyone know if it is on the g11?), so the surest way is to go for a really low iso speed, hold your breath, and then fake perfect focus by squashing the whole bottom end down in lightroom. :)

aside from that it's great; tbh my dslr generally stays at home now unless i have a particular reason to bring it, whereas i used to carry it everywhere before the g10.

the G11 is less megapixels than the G10 and I gather better for low light high ISO etc.

Another vote for the g11.

The Canon s90 is supposed to be pretty good as well, it has the same sensor as the g11, but in a super compact body

So what compacts are the best these days?

Want smallish, good quality (doesn't have to be AMAZING), good in low light.

In the past I would have got a Lumix or Canon, still the same?

Hi guys,

I've really got very little idea about photography but I'm desperate to start learning and I'm thinking I've got around a grand to spend (although preferably less) so I might as well dive in... I've just been looking at a Nikon D3000.

Initially I saw them with the twin VR lens kit. All I could find out was that this includes one 18-55mm and one 55-200mm (which doesn't really mean much to me) but when I did some research, I read that I might be better off with just a prime lens like this one - http://www.cnet.com.au/nikon-af-s-dx-ni ... 295116.htm - which I found here for $215 - http://www.citiwideonline.com/au/index. ... 1&Itemid=1

Most of my photography will be outdoor landscapes and closeups of plants/funghi, and I also try to get shots of animals when I can. It would also be good to be able to take low-light shots at family functions, parties with friends, etc. A couple of sites I read suggested that the prime lens would be good for all of these uses.

What do people think about that? Should I get a cheapish zoom lens as well? Or should I stick with the kit? Hope you don't mind helping a total noob...

Thanks
Neil

Pretty similar to what I use (50mm f1.8 prime plus Tamron 18-200 zoom)

I find it a good combo. Good luck getting animal shots with a prime though, unless they are really tame (and you can get close).

Thanks Jamessss... Like I said, I've got no effing idea what I'm doing here so that's a big help! Hadn't really thought through the animals thing very well. So maybe I can get a zoom as well... Can you give me any tips on what to look for in a zoom for doing that then?

Got myself a Nikon d3000 and just decided to go with the kit lenses... Maybe I'll regret it but I've got so much to learn I couldn't justify spending any extra. Haven't had time to play yet but can't wait!

Start saving for a Nikon 70-200 VR f2.8....... ($2500) You wont regret it. I love my baby
That might be a little exteme for you.......... A good affordable upgrade lense would be a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 which you can pickup online for around $360. If you like funghi, then a macro lens would definitely be useful for you. I use a Nikon AFS Micro 60mm f2.8. I also have the Nikon 50mm f1.4 prime lense. Used to use it a fair bit when I was doing lots of gig photography. Large apertures are great for low light photography. Havent used it at all lately.

Enjoy the new camera!

so here we go again - round in round in circles.
I can not decide what to get, even after reading this thread.

G10 - is the bottom end DSLR right?
G11 - more exxie thant he G10 and it top of the range compact right?
This is how it was potitioned to me at the store at the weekend anyway - tell me if i am wrong.

I am not sure I want to got to DSLR in the chance i just want spend the time perfecting my art. This will also be our only camera and I can not imagine hitting the streets of indo or paris even for the day and wanting to carry a G10 around all day. But then the G11 price seems to be higher considering you get less magapixels and smaller screen.

Sort me out here - i may be right off track.

I want something I can carry without needing its own case and trailor. I want great quality shots and the ability to manually take shots (depth of field etc) if i want - or just happy snap if my wife wants to pick it up.

I am attracted to the Cannons, but would consider the LX3 if i can not decide if either the G10 or 11 suit us.

I am lost. Want to buy.

hahaha - and it might have been me that is now confused.

Dan - can you explain to me the G10 / G11 and G12 is one sentence covering the following

Status - DSLR / Compact
Size - in practical terms
Function - sensor size, megapixle etc
Useability - Can i easily alter depth of field etc myself or is it all auto vs have to do it all yourself and no auto

Thanks mate - ill send you commission when I buy.

Re: Camera

they're almost compact - a bit larger than compact but not even CLOSE to dslr size.

size - 109x78x46mm. it's too big to fit into pockets really but is otherwise completely fine. doesn't weigh too much either.

function - don't worry about the differences between g10 and g11 here, the g11 will actually produce better pictures despite having fewer megapixels.

usability - yep, that's fine, you just select Av and pick your desired aperture, and everything else falls into place.

it's pretty nifty, a bit shit at higher ISO but if you have enough light then definitely a winner. i've got the g10, if you scroll up the page, i posted a bunch of photos i've shot with it. have since lost mine tho, gutting. :(

ok so the two i saw on the weekend were very different in size. Is there a g10 or g11 that isnt a powershot - cause one was definately more like a SLR as apposed to a compact.
