Just upgraded my Nikon D70 to a Nikon D300.
I purchased this brand new on ebay from a power seller from Melbourne with 1000 sales. Paid 5 weeks ago, but still no camera. Police will be involved. Not a happy chappy at the moment as I stand to lose $2000

Haha, me too!

Bought it off a guy here in Melbourne, really random that he was selling it. Cheaper than what I would have picked it up in Japan for, even more so when I considered paying duty on it on the way back.

Pick it up tomorrow night. Rad.

So I've been looking at Nikon vs Canon over the last few days cause my 450d is really too small for my hands so I'd like to upgrade before I go away.

Now, lenses aside (which I know is a big ask): Are Nikon's more "usable". They seem to have a few features that really make sense to me, like the reset oft changed options thing, and they also seem to have less obscuration through menu for some functions.

But this is all from reading on the internets.

Anyone have first hand experience?

there are heaps of reveiws (as you know) that compare them...... most of the reveiwers have first and experience.... bottom line is really personal preference. Go into a shop and play around with them for a while, go through the menus and take a few snaps. You'll find that the larger canons have the same menu system as your current model (the buttons are in different spots however :)

they are both gong to take awesome shots.

Nikon have long been known for having 'better' ergonomics.

The Canon 40D goes a way to make EOS bodies comfier, with the new shaped/contoured grip section.

I use nikon bits and tend to find them a bit more logical.

Best to pop into a good camera shop (ahem!) and ask one of the experienced and knowledgable staff (*cough*) to have a tinker with both.

Ultimately, spend less on the camera and more on lens/es. Get the cheapest body that SUITS you and spend up on glass.

You can't really tell from a few minutes though.

Are there places that rent bodies?

The only reason I really want to upgrade is I realised I'm not holding the 450d right, which gives me a cramp in my little finger after a while (or after lots of pick up put downs). When I held a 40D it just felt better. I like the wheel better than the directional keys too, not that it really matters.

Have you considered a battery grip for your 450? I have big hands so a battery grip was a big help when I had a 400D. Michaels do rentals - http://www.michaels.com.au/pages/servic ... t-hire.php

I assume the 400D lenses will fit the 40D?

elly - the 400D is below the 40D in the Canon heirarchy

The canons go like this:

400D <- basic
40D
5D
1D <- super

cool :smt023

I will prolly stick with my 400D as I am very happy with it... maybe get a macro lens and some other bits and bobs instead of upgrading (in the unlikely event I actually have some spare cash!)

ely,

With cameras, unless there is a feature that you *require* then upgrading won't net you a whole lot of difference.

Lenses, thats where you want to drop cash.

If you are in the Canon system, most of the 'good lenses' are in'EF Mount' which means they'll fit any Canon EOS body.

'EF-S Mount' only fit the cropped (1.6x) bodies, so 400D/450D/40D/30D etc.

Lenses/Flashes will get you better results than any change in camera body will.

Also peeps, we've got a June sale on so pop in and we'll do a stupid deal for you on stuff we don't want, but you do! :D

As an update on my previous post. I never did get my camera. The police executed a search warrant and arrested the seller a couple of weeks ago. The guy ripped off a total of $30,000 off people on ebay. He confessed to having a gambling problem and all $30,000 was lost at Crown Casino. The court case is in September, but the officer I have been dealing with thinks they may borrow some money from family to pay me back before the case goes to court as the judge is likely to be more leniant on them. I am sceptical.

On a lighter note, I have just purchased another Nikon D300 on ebay. Have used paypal this time which now offers a $20,000 gaurantee, which will help me sleep better at night!

Has anyone ever bough stuff ogg Gumtree before. Have never used it before. My first impression is there may be a lot of hot property in there.

Can someone tell me about Canon speedlites?
I wish to purchase one, id love it to be able to shoot off camera wirelessly, what will i need.

1Ds MarkII is mine!

Have a 50mm f1.4
24mm f2.8 will be next, then after that? 70-200 f2.8, or any other recommendations?

The 1Ds has a wireless transmitter yes?

I use a Canon Speedlite 430ex and a Canon ST-E2 for wireless triggering.

The Speedlite 550ex can be a master & slave, where as the 430ex is slave only.

Both are E-TTL, however the 430ex only E-TTL via the ST-E2. 3rd party (cheap) transmitters don't offer E-TTL so you have to manually set your shutter / aperture according to the flash. Time consuming and lame. E-TTL or nothing else.

If the 1Ds MK2 can act as a master, then you only need a 430ex, else it's a 430ex and ST-E2.

The 50mm f/1.4 is awesome. Coupled with a 28mm f/2.8 you will be pretty right, if you want length it's the question of length, aperture and budget. Things can get quite expensive. I bought a 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM for around $1000 second hand. While the f/4.5-5.6 looks bad on paper, it has been responsible for some pretty crisp clean shots ie:

Image
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/10
Focal Length: 70 mm
ISO Speed: 1000
Exposure Bias: -2/3 EV

We should chat at length when you get close to buying a telephoto, I've been in the market before.

I've got 70-200mm f2.8 and it's sharp as fuck. My fave lens hands down, with the only real con being I sometimes have a hard time finding excuses to use it. I tossed up between the non IS and IS 2.8 version's and found that I didn't need the IS that much and that the non IS was sharper.

Heya.

I need a camera bag which can fit my 400d (with battery expansion) a small prime lense and a larger Tamron zoom.

At the moment I have a Lowepro bag which can fit the camera with either lense but doens't have a compartment for the other lense.

What brands are good?

What do people have?

Soes anyone what to buy this?
