when / where did you first hear dubstep???

Post by Lós Kasino— »

Now that it's 'bigtime', the dub parties over here pull bigger numbers than the dnb parties. :|

first time I ever heard it was Cammo playing opening set for Greg Packer & Lady Erica @ Fracture - Brown Alley Nov. 2005.

thought he was playing dnb records @ 33&1/3 speed.

ha!

First time i heard was when the Skream Big apple mix was on the big apple records site. I didnt like it at all then. Must have been 2001-2002. Didnt grab me at all for a while. Then It must have been about 2 years later when it all started to sound in half time i didnt mind it.

Somewhere around late 2000 / early 2001. I was ordering it in at DMC, though back then it was Ghost, Soulja, Tempa, Big Apple and some Mark-1 white labels. 2-step business.

I took a trip to London mid 2001 and I clocked a DJ Hatcha / Tempa mix being played in a cafe in Shoreditch, was rad.

When i was watching a documentary in the 80s about whales mating. :teef:

i cant remember when i first heard it to be honest, i remember telling Chris Mitchell to book Cammo to play some for fractured when it reopened in July 2005 so it must have been prior to that.

ha!
Yeah, whenever it's new and weird, I assume it's John playing. I was at that gig, too. I even ran up to the decks to make sure he didn't have the bpm's out of whack, but it was a CD...I think.

Cammo = good music for twisted sorts...always the first on envelope pushing IMO.

Paul Rose dubstep/breaks mix. Heard it in June 2005 when Rob M posted it in the mixes forum here. Still one of my favorite mixes ever.

I thought it was just going to be dub, so put it on as just relaxing background music. By the end of the first track (Even - Oak Forest) I was just sitting there  total head-nod trance. By the time it closed with Toasty - Like Sun it was over for me. Had no expectations but it came right out of leftfield and really grabbed me.
flippo wrote:this mix is fucking awsome. Lovin the dubstep.

elements of goa/psy/tribal, elements of breaks, elements of DnB, elements of dub, elements of everything. Love the fusion of the spacy organic sounds and the hard industrial crunchyness.

I actually produced a track a few months ago and I didnt know what to call it, but I guess it would fit in the dubstep style? It's got weird screachy noises and tribalish drums. I'm inspired to finish it now

:D

3 years on and about to launch a record label - guess it made an impression :D

I don't think that feb 05 hotflush mix is hosted anymore, but if anyone wants to hear it I'd be more than happy to host it up. It's very good.

mr harris is a composer, producer and player
been at the forefront of so many genres over the years
napalm death, quoit and scorn
he seems quite comfortable making the music he wants to make and owning the genre thereafter.

First time I KNEW I was listening to dubstep was at Wobble, Ac23 kicking my booty with some madsickcunt basslines last year. Would definitely have heard it before that but not know the genre.
