Pffft. Student lame-os. They contribute nothing to society, yet get the payment first. Fucking handout vultures imo. I see a lot of bra-burning and not a lot of job-getting.

not true, students pay for big fat unis land aquisition and new developments (*cough* rmit, own half the dam city land even where they don't have uni buildings), and pay academics' wages who arguably contribute less to society. and get free o/s trips n shiz to research.Hardy wrote:deviant wrote:my missus got it on monday... she's a student though

and lecturers when half the time you'd do better to read provided online course notes, everythings digital these days anyway. self-teach yourself prettymuch anything and learn more onthejob...

Are you fucking serious? Who the fuck do you think writes the online course notes? Or the textbook for that matter? And which poor cunt has to read/look at/listen to whatever crap you turn in and mark it fairly and constructively?Kaiproject wrote:not true, students pay for big fat unis land aquisition and new developments (*cough* rmit, own half the dam city land even where they don't have uni buildings), and pay academics' wages who arguably contribute less to society. and get free o/s trips n shiz to research.Hardy wrote:deviant wrote:my missus got it on monday... she's a student though

And the bit where our jobs depend on producing research of international standing kinda makes the whole international travel thing a bit of pain in the arse actually. In fact, if I could NOT be travelling, or even have the slightest say in the place I live I'd be a damn sight happier. And I do all this why? Because I'm the fucking world expert in something and it seems like a bit of a cop out to not try to push the envelope a bit. But yanno, that's clearly not contributing anything to society/knowledge/human endeavour.
Oh and we get the $900 because most of us get absolutely nowhere near $80k.
So really, fuck up sunshine

^ well said retzie. It's one of the shittest things in the world that to follow your career in academia in the early days you have no say in where you're going to live. If the job is there, you have to go there. I'm only still in Melbs because I jumped off the academic boat. Otherwise I'd be living in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
BTW I don't get paid for the annual 2 hour lecture I do, and you students get the handouts in case you're too inattentive to fucken listen. When i did undergrad we wrote all our notes with a pen, and if you didnt take any it was your fucking problem that you had nothing to study. Now you're spoon fed.
Let's not even talk about all the hours of unpaid work involved in marking uni assignments and exams for people who's only job at uni is sessional teaching or tutoring.

students have the notes taken for them now?? fucken jeebus, that would been awesome, and way easier come study time (insteada having to read my own shit notes)

yeh but dan at the same time it was a pretty silly thing to say
academics contributing nothing to society? um...isn't the whole point of academia to add to the supply of knowledge of the human race? isn't that pretty much what any person who has completed a doctoral thesis has done?
retzie was reasonably justified in her response.

Re: $950 most likely coming your way, courtesy of the Govt.
Er, no? The whole 'choosing where you live thing' is definitely not just about me, in fact, I've got it pretty easy. Almost all academics I know have had to deal with heart-breaking choices because of their career. One member of our department has a wife and one year old kid across the country. She's an academic too and they just CAN'T get jobs in the same place. Other people I know have spent up to 3 years in different countries from their partners. It's a pretty big part of the gamedeviant wrote:taking things personally much?
If there were any merit (or even point) to the original post, then mebbe I wouldn't have bothered.

... that's obviously not ideal for them, but it's still their choice. They can choose to live with their family, or they can choose their career. Everyone has to make sacrifices.retzie wrote:Er, no? I'd give up just about anything to be wanted around the world for my expertise and knowledge. Why do it if you don't want it? (rhetorical)
Also no money yet. Getting very desperate now. Going to Jungle Run has ruined me financially and I only spent $80

True. And I think everyone makes a contribution to society - there's no macro without the micro. I just mildly take offence to a profession of fairly quantifiable contribution and sacrifice being glibly singled out as the one that should be left out of the blanket payment for no apparent reason (or perhaps it was meant to speed up the payment to students??) How 'bout we just say "Hurry the fuck up for everyone"?hardy wrote:Everyone has to make sacrifices.
By the way, I don't think that the sacrifices I mentioned are necessarily a good thing - I dunno if I'd drag someone else into this mess

Re: $950 most likely coming your way, courtesy of the Govt.
not sure exactly. something about tax libiality
ATO website wrote: If your taxable income is $100,000 or less, you can calculate your adjusted tax liability from information included in your notice of assessment by:
* adding the amount at label A (tax on taxable income) to the amount at label O (Medicare levy and Medicare levy surcharge),
* adding the amount of Foreign resident withholding credit, if any, shown in the note to label G then
* taking away the amount at label G (tax offsets and other credits).
This final figure is your adjusted tax liability. If the figure is greater than zero and you meet the other criteria, you are eligible.

Sorry if this has already been touched on, but if and when the payment is made and/or approved, are people notified? Or does the money just appear in the same account your pay goes into?

How can you winge about a free handout.

I think ours came in today. Much more in our account than should be. But no verification as yet. Hmmm....
Re: $950 most likely coming your way, courtesy of the Govt.
Free handout? How is this a free handout? The government is borrowing money to fund this and will pay off those loans through taxation. Now....I'm sure I knew somebody that was a taxpayer.......OH thats right, me! and you! and everyone else, who isn't rich enough to hire tax geniuses to exploit loopholes!Blaxter wrote:How can you winge about a free handout.

They are giving us an advance on our own money and doing it in such a fashion as to reduce its value as much as possible through
- creating excessive inflation therefore reducing the purchasing power of this money
- making us pay for x amount of dollars with x + c amount of eventual taxation or a reduction in x + c of public infrastructure or programs.
so yeh, I'm gonna whinge about it if its all the same to you.
