So what's Melbourne like?

Post by saggynipple »

Planning to move to Melb next month, got a mate just moved and he's lovin it... though as I've never visited, a bit more info can't hurt!

Just wanna make sure Melb has plenty of mad night life + lots of interesting and diverse crap going on. I already know you aussies are pretty lax so no worries there... just don't wanna get there and find out *all* the clubs close at 3am and when good DJs come to town the venue gets over-run by little girls wearing fucking PLUR :bunny: :cat: (Atlanta).

Any resemblance to east london would be perfect!

... btw I realise moving to a city (and country for that matter) that I've never been to before might not be the brightest thing to do... but... meh...

Cheers!

Melbourne rocks.

In reference to your early club closing times, many bars and clubs have 24-hr licenses.

I personally think Melbourne is the best city in Australia, I just wish I could pick it up and put it down on top of Sydney or Perth... much better beaches and weather... but that's just me, heaps of people love Melbourne's unpredictable weather.

The problem is good weather tends to attract wankers.

People are friendly and laid back. Its like a country town vibe in a big city. The beats scene isn't anywhere near as big as anywhere in England's cities but its intimate and underground. London is really fast paced. So moving to melbourne would be like moving to bristol. Its a great city and most people get sucked in quick. England and australian cities are quite alike.. So you shouldn't get a culture shock on arrival.

Melbourne is so good there's free accommodation at our train stations.

Shep = Shepperton aka the birthplace of who has become Direkt aka the Shepper Don Corleone.

Cultural heart of Victoria...Australia, for that matter. Imagine Florence, Italy mixed with happy, outdoors-type folk in a rural...yet complete urban-type setting.

Plus, living in Shep means easy vacation to Dookie. It's like having the French Riviera on your doorstep.

Needs more Yahoo Bar in Melbourne Town IMO!

Ha, took me a while to find wtf you were talking about on google maps.. "shepparton melbourne" didn't give me anything... no wonder, it's bloody miles out! Think I'll leave Shep to the sheep :)

Hahahaha!!!! Gold.

Saggy: Prahran is nice. Not the cheapest suburb, but it's a great spot with plenty going on and is close to the city.

Yeah, mate. No piss-take at all: Melb rips!!!

I moved here for 1-year almost 10-years ago. Whether outer or inner, it's all good. I live 35km out from CBD and drive in every weekend for gigs, etc and it only takes me 20min. Inner living is the biz, but I like the hills, trees, parks and all that the rural-urban fringe brings with it...but I also like the nightlife. Melbourne has it all.

Just make sure not to support Collingwood in the footy and you should be right!

I'll try and be fair in my appraisal

+
lots of diverse stuff going on. if you want it, there is def a subculture (maybe a small one) for it in melb
food and coffee is amazing
international gigs come through on a regular basis
rent is comparatively cheap

-
the weather, though this may be an improvement for you from london
trendiness, tends to be pretty out of control
booze and drugs are quite expensive

here is a tip: don't even think about living far from the city, try and live as close as possible and along a tram or train line.

the northside mincing prancers wear plaid shirts and have cooler haircuts and wayfarers to go with their skinny leg jeans
