Jupiter sounds so strange... WTF?

Post by youthful_implants »

Ok so apparently although space is a vacuum there is still sound in space as a result of electromagnetic vibrations coming from the planets themselves.

These can be heard by specialist devices built into some of the space probes such as Voyager and are within the audible human range.

This is what Jupiter sounds like, and it is awesome.

Watch the posted video on YouTube.

Jupiter sounds like me playing with Absynth!

I keep thinking the Dr Who theme song is about to start.

 thats it its totally the sort of sound I would put in a song.

but I love how the pitch changes and how low it reverberates, I'd like to hear that on a big rig.

Nothing on the wikipedia page mentions anything in the audible range... sounds like whoever made this video just converted the electromagnetic signal recordings into audio. I'm guessing the fact it's all so low-pitched is just artistic choice of whoever did it... still pretty sweet though.

You didn't say anything about it being converted, you said that this is what it sounds like in the audible human range, but in space there is no molecules to vibrate and hence no sound.

cant wait to get home and make a "recording" of what Uranus (or rather Myanus) sounds like and put a picture of the planet on youtube to accompany it.

NASA interpreted the information, it was sent back from the Voyager probe.

You can download the recordings for free.

I believe they compress the data into a short time span like you would with stop motion photography.

well until you can prove with empirical evidence that this audio is a fake I will have to conclude that it isn't.

isn't that how science works?

what about this?

haha, ok the audio is real, ill give you that, i definately heard something.

But you have to prove to us with empirical evidence or at least a trusted source that it came from Jupitor and not from an absynth or something similar.

I regret posting this now .

So is it not feasbile that oscillations which are not sound waves can be interpreted in this way?

Surely the principles are the same, just the timing and pitch that would need regulating?

Speaking of people who dont know shit about science I would like to introduce the Victorian Skeptic Society.

A pure bunch of fucktards. Saw some pamphlets of theirs at a science week expo thingy. Almost punched the fat cunt in the face.

http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/galileo/sounds.cfm

As the website says its about converting radio waves into audio form. So yes its converted.

Having said all that, that youtube clip has been touched up a wee bit methinks and you couldnt hang in orbit around Jupiter and hear cool sounds.

Still kinda like the sound.

LOL... highly entertaining thread. :)

My only point is that the audio, if it is a real signal recording, isn't actually what you'd hear if you were there. It's an electromagnetic signal that's been converted to an audio signal. It's a lot like the way NASA provide "photos" of planets that aren't actually visible light - they've converted some other kind of energy into the visible spectrum so we can "see" it.

old news

kepler postulated musica universalis in 1595 based on pythagoras' mathematical basis of musical harmony; and the belief that the particular tones emitted by the planets depended upon the ratios of their respective orbits, just as the tone of a lyre-string depends upon its length has been around like forever.

christchurch public library ordered us in the first two volumes of the NASA voyager recordings back in 1998
the fascinating thing is that the first volume (the solar winds) sounds way more terrestrial but starts to sound more remote and cosmic if you will the further out in orbit the voyager gets

maybe its trippy hippy shit but man is it amazing nonetheless; peeps have forgotten that astronomy; mathematics; astrology and cosmology were never segregated by original thinkers into "true" and "rubbish" till quite recently (in terms of mankinds history i.e.) and i for one am glad

the minds there to think interesting thoughts with; who gives a shit if it's not been replicated in a laboratory yet
get it out of that box and let it stretch its legs a little
sanity's overrated anyways
