OMG i just get more and more amazed at how the American Corporations (allowed by the Govt) can find even more interesting and new ways to screw the public!

I could be wrong but could not imagine Australian farmers allowing that to happen here??

Anyone know if anything similar happens here??

Not only allowed by the US government but fully supported - I looked it up, and Obama's new Food Czar (Head of the FDA) is straight from Monsanto. I'm visiting the states at the end of the year, and I don't think I will want to eat anything!

I pray that there are no factories in Australia washing our meat in ammonia because the cattle lives standing in it's own manure in large fields of small dirt pens eating corn feed which increases the levels of bacteria in it's gut because cattle should be eating grass!

Watched Food Inc last night and OMFG. Beyond fucked up tbh. Has made me want to go the US even less than I ever have. I'm not sure I could bring myself to eat anything there. Was just hoping throughout the whole thing that the Australian system wasn't quite as horrible, surely it can't be?! At least I hope not.

The whole thing was really shocking - i won't even bother reeling off the bits I found the most horrible.

Certainly made us think about where our food comes from. Will definitely be doing more market shopping as a result...did something to my levels of trust for the supermarkets too.

Totally, makes you want to buy organic, but even that isn't necessarily that good. I see that Macro's on bridge road in richmond was bought out by Woolworths a while back...

In the Weekend I watched Okie Noodling - http://www.okienoodling.com/
It's a documentary about men in Oklahoma who put their hands into muddy holes at the bottom of rivers and lakes to catch cat fish. Crazy.

Watched a good doco called Following Sean

Was about a kid being raised during the height of Free Love in haight & ashbury by parents whos apartment had all sorts wander in and out, he was 4 at the time of the first interview, was pretty cool....Also watch Louie Theroux's America's Medicated Kids.... Anti depressants prescribed for kids as young as 6 diagnosed with bi-polar....

Now i know the affects of bi-polar all to well (years engaged to a sufferer) and my heart goes out to all that suffer. But i wonder is 6 years old a bit too young to really diagnose??? These are hardcore medications, that i worry about there effects on a oung developing brain....

Will do... Open to any other ideas too for sure.

I haven't been watching many doco's lately but here's some I've seen and loved over the last few years (I think the top 3 are my all time favourites)...

Dub Echoes
Scratch
Rash: Scratch It And It Spreads
Who Killed The Electric Car
Enron: The Smartest Guy In The Room
Visions Of The Future
The Corporation
ABC's Life At 3 series
BBC's The Human Body series

...And although I agree with a lot of his critics, I've always loved a Michael Moore doco:

Capitalism: A Love Story
Sicko
Faranheit 9/11
Bowling For Columbine

Oh and anything by David Attenborough!

There's so many more I can't think of but lots of them have already been mentioned in this thread I think.

Gotta agree with apophenian here. She was explicitly warned not to do EXACTLY what she did, and when trying something a new drug, that either makes her a dumbass or a sensationalist looking to make the story more interesting at the expense of fair reporting. I mean, really, she's not a teenager..

There wouldn't be too many doco's out there the are completely fair and balanced though would there? The majority of film makers would set out to make one with some kind of agenda in mind and I think with Should I Smoke Dope (and others by the same lady), she just wanted them to be entertaining. IMO she succeeded.

This is why kids in school should be taught to consume all forms of media in a very analytical way. Just look at how many people look at ACA as an actual real current affairs show (rather than an advertorial show with an agenda to push prejudice mentalities) or look at the Herald Sun as an actual news paper. There really isn't anywhere to go for absolute truth so doco's are no different.

True, but there was something particular about her doco, evident in the title, that seemed to try and purport a fair appraisal. Plus, this is a BBC documentary, they usually have a higher standard. And it's articles like this that belie the sensationalism, obscured by the token "what we need is a debate":
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7314812.stm

Super Size Me, for example, is done in a very different tone, it's quite clear that it's main goal is to be humorous rather than informative. This doco has a very different tone.

Of course one should always be critical, but journalism, especially from publicly funded sources, has a responsibility to provide accurate information, and to make it clear when it's not.

I just think it's taking advantage of an ignorance for the sake of ratings. If she had taken 20 shots of booze and thrown up, everyone would call her an idiot.

finally saw the doco 'Footy Chicks'. One that Hughbert kept saying to check out.

Jeebus fucking christ. I was disgusted and feel a little shattered about the world of football. It seemed to be based mostly on NRL, but it did talk about AFL a bit as well. Both parties are shocking, the women and men. Couldn't believe some of the attitudes and behaviour, was pretty full on. Can't get some of the stuff they said out of my head, like - this chick was throwing up over the bannister at a party and one of the players walked up and pulled down her pants and started fucking her  who in their right mind thinks that is okay to do????

I remember seeing this one a couple of years ago and thinking the same thing. Also how much it reminded me of the college I went to! There is a certain mindset and pack mentality (both for men and women) that seems to take over sometimes and it gets nasty and dehumanises people and people's views of, and ability to feel empathy towards, other people. I felt very drained and depressed after watching it.

actually one of the psychologists said that because the men play as a team, and are constantly told they are a team and need to think and act like a team at all times, that that may be the cause. Not sure really if it is, but it kind of makes sense with the pack mentality they have.

Elly - yeah it made me feel pretty blah after watching it. And kind of scared. The pack mentality stuff was really full on

watched a doco yesterday called 'catfish' about full on facebook identity theft and duping.

filmed from the victim's side, and they track down the person and confront them.

really interesting and slightly scary watching as this just happened to a friend of mine, to the tune of 8 months and thinking they were in a relationship!

Afraid to say it's not a doco!

Was a good watch though, I was wondering where it was gonna go the whole way, I think a lot of people were expecting a "bigger" ending but I thought it was fairly fitting with the mood of the rest of the movie.

totally fake?!

wowsers. at times it felt staged i must admit, but i wanted it to be real hahah.

i liked the ending too, i felt like if he had blown up in her face with 'you bitch how could you have done this to me' etc etc
she wouldnt have learnt anything from it...instead he sat there and talked her through the whys etc.

I guess yeah fake cos for a while the makers claimed it was a true story and then It kind of came out that it wasn't.

The explanation of the title was the best line in the movie but also seemed very scripted, I don't think it seemed so real.
