Had this chat with some mates. This is a review of Avatar I wrote after seeing it in 3D:
Ok, I'm in a really bad mood because in the real world no-one likes ecologists. We get in the way of the bottom line with our bleeding hearts and naked group-hug 'won't someone think of the ecosystem' placards, irritating major petrochemical, mining and resource management clients, so perhaps I wasn't in the best frame of mind to see Cameron's 3D CG Sci-fi version of Dances with Wolves last night. Perhaps on re-watching I will experience the orgiastic ecological epiphanies that have lit up pretty much every other person I know who has seen this film. I don't know, and I sure as hell don't want to sit through 3 hours of plot-line hell to find out. The images are luscious, but they are all derivative; a quick thumb through any tome featuring lichen, fungi and marine organisms would reveal images nearly identical to those seen on Pandora. I can't find fault with the presentation beyond the standard 'you've just crossed a rhino and a hammerhead shark/ an anteater and a horse/ an eagle and a pterosaur/ a dog and some black CG to come up with new animals.... zoology FA1L', the 3D effects are the 'future' of imaging technology (can't wait to see the 'Car City' ad in 3D) and the use of bioluminescence is stunning.

I think that the thing that irks me more than anything is the assumption that there are 'goodies' and 'baddies'; ecology is the new religion, and a redemptive christ-like figure (Obama? Ghandi? Bernake?) will enter the fold in the not-too-distant future to stop the greedy shareholders from taking the oil from beneath the peaceful savages. A nice pipe-dream, perhaps, but if people are taking any message from this film, it is that they require a deity to lead them to ecological utopia and that they don't need to take responsibility for death/destruction/extinction events cos the goodies will win in the end. Even the message imparted early on in the film that nature doesn't take sides is whitewashed in the final few scenes. I'm certain that ecosystem imbalances will redress themselves post-Homo sapiens, but this will be a slow evolution involving the exploitation of new niches made available by the 6th great extinction event, not all the seagulls in Melbourne suddenly attacking Robert Doyle because they realise that he is a puffy douche while everyone cheers on from the sidelines like extras from BMX Bandits.

Overwhelmingly, my feelings upon leaving the cinema were that I had been turkeyslapped by James Cameron for 3 hours (as Chaz so succinctly put it, 'in 3D'). The new technology is wonderful, but I feel that 'The Road' has a more important and pertinent message regarding our current use of resources, and the quasi-religious eco-following that Cameron has now generated frustrates and angers me.

/rant over
I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be the center of attention. I wanted the glory, I wanted the fame. I wanted the pretty girls to come up and say, "Hi, I see that you're good at Centipede."

I hate that Cameron director for crimes against cinema made with Titanic.
Only redeeming thing about about that film 10 hears ago, apart from being a distant memory is the gobby I copped during the film.

i liked it, it wasnt like a fricken masterpiece of a story line or anything, and Cameron didn't say it was. he wanted the technology to produce the world he had thought about for like 10-15 years or something like that, and he achieved that i think

who really cares whether people like it or hate it? wouldn't waste my time ranting on about it

I LOVED it. Didnt really care that the plot was pretty basic, the visual stimulation was enough to keep me more than interested the entire time.

I can't decide wether I liked it or not. I know i didn't think it was amazing, but I don't think it sucked either.

it was fine as a movie, I was entertained for the duration etc. but i didn't walk out blown away.

i didn't think it deserved an oscar, not even close, so i'm glad it didnt get one. actually what do I care, give oscars to whoever, couldn't give a shit tbh.

fuck, give one to Pauly Shore for Son In Law, Biodome, and especially Encino Man. Give him two for Encino Man.

I'm choosing life instead, it's amazing and in 3D all the time!

also I have a smurf phobia that i don't like talking about

I thought Alice in Wonderland was pretty average.

Took a really great/strange story and turned it into your average hollywood hero's journey dragon slayer myth.

The mad hatter was just a bit sad.

Then it turns out Alice went off to incite the Chinese into starting the boxer rebellion.

Actually, according to the wikipedia page, it was Godzilla, not Alice

Amazing movie to watch. Hell, I just love Imax 3D. The 3 hours flew by and I didn't want to leave.

Some parts of the script made me cringe but honestly, I've rarely seen a Hollywood movie that didn't. Let's just say it was a good message delivered naively.

seems to be a correlation between liking Avatar and breaks?

I'm with Hegg, shit story and juvenile dialogue, but looked just amazing enough to be enjoyable on the surface.

Hype was pretty lol though, clowns loved it before they had even seen it.

Can't say Ive noticed any movement in attitudes towards ecology though.
