cycling caps do serve a few purposes just like any hat really. stops your head from being burnt thru the gaps in your helmet, keeps rain out of eyes, worn backwards it protects your neck from the sun and so on

as above in huge's post, if you choose to wear a helmet (which imo you should), a cycling cap goes underneath it

i personally don't ride with one all the time, but in the wet they are awesome coz instead of the water droplets running down your forehead and into your eyes, they run to the edge of the peak and drip off in front of you
