Paper I can deal with. I can get my head around it. I can see that maybe in the future we will use hemp or something else.

Plastic is everywhere. I noticed it when I was in my bathroom yesterday. I became suddenly terrified. So I looked it up last night and reasised how beyond comprehension this is.

And the damage it does. The way humans are affected by it seeping into our skin.

I started throwing out things that my baby uses already that are plastic and get warmed up.

Apparently the tests they do reveal terrifying truths.

TERRIFYING!

- oh good point about the starch stuff. Cadbury started doing it a few years back in the chocolate boxes.

i read an article about reusing the same water bottle- ie your mount franklin bottle and the chemicals you ingest as the bottle 'invisibly' breaks down inside

terrifying- i always did this to avoid adding to the landfill by buying a new one daily

siggi bottle ftw- bare metal

that garbage patch is disgraceful. we ought to be ashamed. some dude is about to swim around it i think to raise cash and awareness. saw it on telly the other night

the pacific plastic soup is pretty crazy. some of it has been there for like 30 years or more. just floating around, slowly falling to bits, getting eaten by birds and fish. they found a dead bird on an island (Midway maybe) and its gut was full of plastic bits.

From what I now understand Nat it is not even reusing the water bottle that is the issue for health. But simply using it in the first place.

Leaching is from the get go.

apparently 99% of everything on earth, inlcuding animals and nature, are now made of plastic. It is everything, everywhere. don't worry about the robots. worry about plastic. it has formed emotions and is going to eat us.

Not to mention the years of Spring Valley and PVC inhaling.

and of the people who live on diet coke- ingesting plastic toxins plus chemical sweeteners at alarming rates

going to be a mad spate of related tumours in years to come imo

I just got plastic "keepcups" for the cafe, my reasoning behind it is that my cafe alone goes thru over 50000 take away cups a year and I doubt that 1% of those get recycled. Plastic is evil, but 50000 paper cups a year freaks me out more tbh!

Ah, is that what he's doing. I saw the ad but missed the show it was on.

I want to go and help clean it up. We CANT leave that there, but i guess more to the point, how was it allowed to get there in the first place.

The whole planet is one big cluster fuck and it makes me totally sad :(

Youve reminded me, I need to get a reusable non poisonous water bottle for work. I use one for about 2 weeks and then start again. I think ive failed.

I'll be aiming to be self sufficient and not needing to use ANY of this shit. Its just a shame that we sold all my dads bio diesel stuff when he died. I didnt realise how much we can do individually - we CAN help reduce this shit individually, but it just usually costs more than the bad.

Altho, i feel a little hypocritcal being concerned about plastics going into my body when i spoke both brown and green. :?

Good work J, its not perfect, but its better than before and at least your making an effort and trying to reduce the waste. :retzielikes:

The supermarkets are terrible plastic pushers: all the meat in plastic trays, veges in plastic trays. Am trying to avoid buying either from supermarket as the butchers and greengrocers don't use so much plastic.

Keep cups FTW, they are plastic but totes saves on paper cups innit.

Dboy, wtf are you doing eating california rolls?

Crap fish byproduct and floor sweepings with flavour enhancer and red food colouring.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surimi

Lean meat from fish or land animals first is separated or minced. The meat then is rinsed numerous times to eliminate undesirable odors. The result is beaten and pulverized to form a gelatinous paste. Depending on the desired texture and flavor of the surimi product, the gelatinous paste is mixed with differing proportions of additives such as starch, egg white, salt, vegetable oil, humectants, sorbitol, sugar, soy protein, seasonings, and enhancers such as transglutaminases and monosodium glutamate (MSG).
If the surimi is to be packed and frozen, food-grade cryoprotectants are added as preservatives while the meat paste is being mixed.[2][3] Under most circumstances, surimi is processed immediately into a formed and cured product.
[edit]Fish surimi
Typically the resulting paste, depending on the type of fish and whether it was rinsed in the production process, is tasteless and must be flavored artificially. According to the USDA Food Nutrient Database 16-1, fish surimi contains about 76% water, 15% protein, 6.85% carbohydrate, 0.9% fat, and 0.03% cholesterol.
In North America and Europe, surimi also alludes to fish-based products manufactured using this process. A generic term for fish-based surimi in Japanese is "fish-puréed products" (魚肉練り製品 gyoniku neri seihin).
The fish used to make surimi include:
Milkfish (Chanos chanos)
Swordfish (Xiphias gladius)
Tilapia
(Oreochromis mossambicus)
(Oreochromis niloticus niloticus)
Big-head pennah croaker (Pennahia macrocephalus)
Golden threadfin bream (Nemipterus virgatus)
Cod (Gadus morhua)
Bigeyes (Priacanthus arenatus)
Pacific whiting (Merluccius productus)
Alaska pollock (Theragra chalcogramma)
Various shark species

not sure if this has been discussed, but how about glass bottles. i tend to pick them over plastic where possible for better recycling.

also D - cos you have a little one, how you finding the nappy debate? use cloth ones or disposable? cloth ones are better, but you can get a service to clean them and get news ones and apparently the chemicals they use to thoroughly clean them are terrible. And disposables...well...not great. But very handy with crazy wiggling child
