MB Photography Exhibition - Taking in Melbourne and Beyond!

Post by Lizkins »

Hi All,

I am thinking of organising a MelbourneBeats exhibition at Miss Libertine’s For Walls Gallery (Ghetto Kitty’s pride and joy that she masterminded).

I would love to see who would be interested in doing it, so please show ya hands yo!

There will be a split of cost on hiring the space for the month. It’s pretty minimal which is awesome! Plus your own cost of mounting your photos. Not sure what to do specifically on that just yet, but I could probably organise through one place like Bond Imaging or somewhere like that.

I am thinking around April next year for the exhibition. I am called it “Taking in Melbourne” but I am happy for this to change, and also for it not to be specifically photography if other design dudes want to get involved.

Cheers,
Liz

Well, its been talked about for ages, and now we gotta proper gallery in ze network to do it in!

I think we need 20-30 photos really, or more. I'm up for contributing a couple.

Liz, maybe you need to hit up those we know would probably be up for it, Mecka, Mr Lob, Karl and a few others come to mind...

if people are overseas they can email us photos if they want and we can get them printed etc! Anything is possible...

awesome guys....
It would be great if everyone can give an indication of

- how many they might like to exhibit
- their preferred format for displaying

i have a contact for good canvas prints, I did mine this way for the opening show and they looked really good. (sold 2 out of 3 too!)

perhaps its a good idea to get some pricing for framing and other methods of display babe, would really be dope if everyone wants to/can afford the same format, whatever that is...

this is my guy for canvas prints - they are more expensive than officeworks etc but are handmade and truly come out beautiful. the guy there, Gerald, is a winner of an old codger and helped me out a lot ;)

who else is keen? Dan the man?

re mounting, to avoid arguments i am leaning towards people mounting how they wish too. It would be cool to all have the same, but the differing opinions on this is unavoidable. I would prefer people representing their works how they wish too! :D

I dont think they have to be of melbourne do they liz?

we ARE melbourne BEATS after all, gig pics would be cool!

now, i can keep you in mind for April, but as im only doing 12 shows i really need to wait and you need to get back to me with definate yes and numbers before we can lock it in, no stress, I just got a lot of proposals coming my way and want to keep everyone happy...

is it a sign of my character that each time i see this thread i think it says 'melbournebeats pornography exhibition"??

hey liz, yes, price is fine, if you are going to put up info it might be best to put it all up here for everyone to check out, as in, the list of 'what's the deal' i sent you...

i got your email and am getting around to it soon!

Here is the "what's the deal" info.

Its $600 for the month, which i'll be dividing between us all who are putting in works. I won't be splitting up as to how many pieces you are putting in, just an even split between all parties! Cool?

FOR WALLS at Miss Libertine….Whats the deal?
- The gallery is open from 1pm to 7pm weekdays and by appointment weekends.

- The hire fee covers rental of the space, assistance with hanging, and 500 full colour flyers that For Walls prints for you if you provide us with one image of your work.

- A non-refundable 50% Deposit is required on approval and confirmation of dates. The remaining Hire Cost must be paid for at least one week before set up

- There is a 20% commission on all artworks sold, additional 5% for eftpos or credit card transactions.

- This covers our online promotions which include a mailing list with 2,000 people and our website, facebook and myspace pages (also around 2,000) along with extra promotion on the For Walls facebook page.

- Shows are hung on Mondays and Tuesdays between 11am-5pm, Show openings are preferably on Wednesday nights between 6-8pm and shows run for a length of a month, longer by application. Bump out and collection of artworks, both sold and unsold, happens on the Monday between 11am-5pm.

- We all love free beer and wine at openings, as part of the gallery hire fee, there is some free beer and wine included. (conditions apply, ask Bo for more detials). Once the free alcohol is finished, patrons can buy alcohol from the bar downstairs, making use of our regular drink specials. (Wednesdays $10 jugs of draught)

- The space is inside the venue of Miss Libertine, with the only entrance/exit being through the front bar. The gallery will only be open during Miss Libertine’s opening hours during the week and by appointment on weekends, but the space is unmanned unless you wish to come and sit the show, which you are more than welcome to do.

- We have motion activated cameras in the space that turn on when someone is in the room. There are signs notifying people of these cameras. There will also be a visitors book for people to sign in when they wish to peruse the art on weekends (they can ask at the bar and staff will open the room for them) Bo is in the venue Tuesdays to Fridays to coordinate sales of artworks and speak to potential buyers about your work. However, we stress that we will take all care and no responsibility for works.

- By signing this document you ackowledge that For Walls is a unique space and has these conditions around the hiring of the space, For Walls and Miss Libertine will do everything to eliminate any possible risks, however are not responsible in the instance of artwork being damaged or missing.

nice one liz...

note - i am now also here mondays so I can sell your works monday - friday and the bar staff are trained up to look after sales when Im not here...

;)

we are getting quite a few return buyers, last opening we had the junior auctioneer from Sotheby's here buying work, and a dealer who has come back with buyer a few times, so its not just selling art to clubbers guys, I'm really trying to build a profile for the gallery that stands on its own in the art world. (your show will be in Art Almanac too, that's like the bible for galleries that comes out monthyl)

I reckon thats a great idea! after all, we ARE all worldly travellers etc

just to let you guys know, a dealer was asked by an internationally profiled artist at a high profile show on wednesday night which out of five galleries she should exhibit at - and he said 'For Walls, hands down, is the new exciting emerging artspace in Melbourne"

We sold almost HALF of Pheelix's works guys. One more this morning. Shipping interstate now.
I am really excited that this is taking off, and truly excited that my little community here is going to be doing a show!

I'm keen I think I'd have 2 maybe 3 that would be worthy. Only got this example online atm:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/du5t/37811 ... 516488821/

An oldie that I took, only concern with that is it was taken with a 3.2mp point and shoot so hopefully good enough quality for printing.

I like that photo!

One thing guys, your pictures WILL need to be big enough to make a good print, we dont want blurry pixellated stuff on the walls unless that's part of your asthetic.

Liz and I will research and let you know how big your images will need to be to blow up to at least A3 size..(which imo is a good average size, unless you want to a series of small ones etc)

;)
