Macbook Pro on Certegy Ezy Pay?

Post by andy_hoffman »

I'm looking at buying a MacBook Pro and a mate told me about Certegy Ezy Pay which is an interest free payment system where you gotta pay a certain amount upfront and then just pay fortnightly repayments. So i'm wondering if anyone knows somewhere in melbourne that offers this on Apple computers. Desperate to get a macbook pro as my old laptop ain't cuttin in no more.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated ;)

Nah it's a purchase. You pay 25% of the full price upfront and then pay the rest off with monthly or fortnightly repayments.

how is it that people constantly think this? you do not get back the amount you paid for these things...

you get back... the GST (if you are registered for it), and the amount of tax you would've paid on that income amount (about %35).

With purchases you have to depreciate them over coming years, where as with rental you don't need to... plus you can upgrade at the end and keep paying the same and don't have the old equipment to get rid of etc...

BUT (very big but)... you pay a FUCKING SHITLOAD MORE on a rental than a purchase. Like double, or even triple what the equipment is actually worth, and you never actually own it... you have to buy it at the end for even more.. if you have damaged it in any way this might also be your only option.. Bit of a rip off imo.

hmmmmm.

i hear all that but this
if you are able to it's 100% tax deductible, making flexirent/rentsmart a bargain for a small business or a computer used for work.
is where im at? I'm the only booker here, I needs pooter, makes it 100% writeoffable yesno?

but it only comes off your reportable income... not the amount of tax you pay. If yo purchase it's the same, only you have to depreciate them over a few years.

Rental:

If you make $60,000 and you pay 30% tax that is $20,000 over the year.

Then you deduct your 5k rental payments from your income, making a reportable income of $55,000, which at 30% tax is $15,000.

Which means the tax department owes you $5,000.

I know tax brackets and other claims could change all this, but in the simplest case isn't that right? Or am I missing something? I could be I'm not good at tax at all.

$18,000 is 30% of $60,000

and $16,500 is 30% of $55,000

so the gov't would owe you $1,500 (which is 30% of $5,000)

so, in short, it's maths you aren't very good at.

I got my iMac from JB on interest free. I don't think it cost me $200 to setup. I got a sweet buy buy price too.

Renting computers is fucked, unless you get to upgrade every 12-months or so.

I can't stand the idea of being locked into a 24-month contract where you end up paying more than the machine is worth and then end up with nothing to show for it other than a "reduced taxable income". Would much rather own it outright, save money and be free to do as I please.

Im here again, pooter is about to be thrown out the window in frustration. I think im just too fast for it now.
currently has 13inch macbook with 2GHz processor and only 1GB memory, whivh i got cheaply brand new in around 2007 and i just waiiiiiiiiiit all the time for things to load.
the network at work is sloooow and its like having 'my balls in a vice' as i loudly proclaim to anyone who will listen a few times a day.
cant even listen to youtube links, too sloooow!

do i go the 13inch pro with 4 or 8 Gb memory? logical.

and im still getting kevin in my ear about renting it but something in me says - own it.

any thoughts?

well pooter works fine at home, with faster connection and only 3/4 of us using it.
but its sloooow at work with the whole building using it, but the other, newer, beefier macs are much faster than mine...
so its a combo of both but i cant work like this!

:scr1pt:

Ive got a 2007 Macbook pro and its still going strong too, but i have 4gb of ram.
So if anything upgrade the ram, should only cost a couple o hundy max, just google the sort of ram you need, get yourself an anti static glove and you can stick the ram in yourself, its under the battery.
....Or just get someone who knows what they are doing do it for you, im sure there are lots of boys willing to impress you with their computer savvy apple fanboy knowledge.

Next find out from Miss libs what kinda modem is being used at work, more specifically what frequency the modem transmits on, you want an 'n' modem as it transmits (i think) at a lower freq and can get through walls better and has less devices crowding its frequency. (things like playstation wireless can disrupt the transmission of other frequencies)
There should be a model number on the modem with this info on it.

The original macbooks don't run N wireless, only G ;)

1GB of ram is a recipe for a slow computer. 2GB should fix you up good.

you should be able to get fast internet on a fairly shitty old computer tbh. internet speed is not relative to computer speed, unless you are using lots of flash, videos and the like.

Bo did you get it mid year or start of 2007?

The mid year release of macbooks airport has Integrated 802.11a/b/g and draft-n (n enabled)
But yeah, anything before that didn't.

no  the computer is slow. my job means i have internet with 3-4 windows open, word, mail and at least one other program running at the same time. this is imperative. i am currently waiting for programs to open, waiting for things to paste into word, waiting for browser windows to appear, all at once. im not a complete idiot.

al and dan - i think i got it halfway through 2007, but honestly cant recall. the modem at Libs is crap and we have bought many new ones, they are all crap and im tired of complaining about it. Do i really need to check out the G vs N thang?
Pretty sure an upgrade of ram will help immensely.
Yes, know plenty of macboys who I can ask to help, but is that really a good idea or should i go to the instore macboys?

also - I called the best accountant in the world and he said - DONT RENT! you pay too much for it in the end and end up writing most of a bought one off anyhow, 66% the first year alone. so MEH to renting!

RE; G/N

the internet doesn't really go fast enough for it to make a difference in Australia. the only difference will be when transfering files between computers on the same network.

Yep, you need more RAM.. the more proggys you have going the more RAM is consumed.. once there is no more RAM left it starts eating into your HDD, which is slowwwww compared to RAM.

Pretty sure you could go here and someone will do it for you...

actually, 802.11n generally runs at 5ghz - you can have it run on 2.4ghz, but then it wreaks havoc with 802.11a/b/g (pre-n wifi) as well as bluetooth. so it's actually generally worse for range than a/b/g.

you can get pretty good results by moving on to a less congested channel though - channels 1 and 6 in particular tend to have loads of bullshit on them, whereas channels around 11 tend to do better.
