Couch Surfing

Post by quick »

I know most of you have heard of it, some of you have used it and some will use it one day... I have been rocking it awesomely in Europe... best way to see a city is with local, like minded people.

One thing I regret is not hosting anyone before I went traveling, but I am certainly looking forward to hosting people when I come home.

If anyone has any interest in showing off Melbourne proppa to a backpacker... then I urge you to join up to this... even if you aren't looking at traveling now, meeting other travelers will encourage you to, plus you do get to meet some awesome people... like Swedish backpacker chicks :noteef: but seriously if you have a couch spare sometimes... join up and host, show the real side of Melb, not the dodgy pub crawls that hostels show them...

ask if you are unsure exactly how it works, but I assure you it is very well set up with a great site... so it is very easy...

whatever... as if cooking 4 chicken parmas and 4 eggplant parmas from scratch for 8 people doesn't count as cooking, plus I make pasta vege bake from scratch as well... no packet, own cheese sauce is awesome, the hint is seeded mustard and chives...

Ah mac n cheese and chicken parmas, classic international dishes!

but yeah, my girl and i were looking to couch surf in Portugal when we couldnt find a place to stay in Lagos.
We have a spare room at our place in St Kilda but its full of expensive gear, dont know if i could trust complete strangers tbh, especially if i have to leave and go to work while they have the run of the house.

its amazing how much trust is given... I am going to Prague on Sunday and the host will only be there the first night, I will be house sitting by myself for the rest of the week... we have talked a bit via email and text, but still... shitloads of trust in the system, great to see...

man, what a bunch of middle class khunts!

im with you quick, we hosted a few dudes last year, cos my housie mark had travelled all through europe on couchsurfing & wanted to share our place.

We have a couch in a sideroom to the kitchen kinda, so they slept there, they cooked yummy foods for us, bought alcohol, and were generally good to have around! plus it was usually only for a night or two, and then one or two on the way back from wherever they were travelling in Oz.

I joined a while ago, but couldnt find anyone in Borneo :tard:
and depending on the destination, id totally do it!
but i seem to go places that are cheap to stay anyhow, if you are in europe, australia or the states its a great idea!

Hmm, I don't think 'middle class' is the right pejorative here...

Pretty sure all my very working class extended family couldn't think of anything worse than some (likely middle class) bum traveller staying with them for free. Jesus, they've disowned me for going to uni (uni = what, you think you're better than us? You think you don't have to work like I do? You think you can just get shit for free?)

More a hippy vs square thing imo.

(I'm all about the paid sublets. Can't stand the thought of shit for free unless it's family/mates, and even then, you pull your weight.)

shame Retzie... shit for free exists... and its fukn nice, u do have to pull your weight but its still a free service that works well... no free loaders, people in it, are people that earn it and work it good, everybody wins, people who do this are not in it for the free bed advantage only..

Squiz your outlook is very much because you are currently a traveller, you may well have the same outlook if you were not doing this, but in this day and age, of course people would be cautious about doing something like this. I think its completely reasonable that people are not willing to open their home to a complete stranger, fair cop really.
