so i'm going to be renewing my contract pretty soon and think i'll stick with optarse.

question is, is it worth getting an iphone or not?

i'm a technological dunce when it's all said and done and really only want my phone to be able to make calls, send messages (text and pictures), take the occasional snap and look pretty.

i reckon iphones look way too complicated and half the crap on there i'd never use. mad street cred though. :teef:

meh. dilly of a pickle!

played with an iphone the other day.

Ups: Looks good, nice apps, street cred etc.
Downs: To hard to type a text! No MMS.

Verdict: iphone=good if you were not looking for a phone in the first place but rather a cool gizmo or you are happy for it to take ages to type a text.

You can set up MMS to work via email pretty easily, why bother though when you've got on-the-go email?

As for typing speed, like any device there's a learning curve - you'll ramp up pretty quickly, I can type damn fast on it now. The autocorrect stuff is brilliant.

Downsides: You can't text with one hand or while walking fast, and battery life isn't so great.
Upsides: Surfing the net/checking your emails on the loo.

I was slow as fuck on teh ol' Nokia

witty, what seems complicated about teh iPhone? you wanna make a call, you press teh phone icon, you wanna send a text you hit teh SMS icon, you wanna check teh weather......and so on

The one thing that's caught me out with SMSing on the iPhone - it remembers the last SMS conversation you had and displays it on screen when you back into SMS at a later date. I'm so used to typing my message first, then being allowed to choose who I want to send it to, that I've sent SMSes to the wrong person a few times.

in the most case, you're right. people just cram so much shit in and are so concerned with pointless nonsense that it ends up impossible to use. iphone isn't that though, it's clean and simple in general, and especially when compared to all the insane bullshit in nokias in particular these days ...

Has anyone got anything useful to say about the Nokia N85?

Seems to be one of few to offer the combination of GPS, wifi, tri-band 3G (America FA1L), non-Windows, non-crap camera and fitting in pocketness that I'm after. Have seen mixed reports about build quality and battery life though...

And Symbian plays nicely with Fring, no? Skype via wifi or bust.

Can has for well cheap if I decide by next week :D

eh, it runs the newest version of s60 of anything i've seen other than whatever the touchscreen ones' product names are (5800 xpressmusic? n97?) and maybe the e66, and that's had some mad improvements. but really, it's still an nseries: symbian is still amazingly shit, it's still slow as hell, it still weighs as much as the sun, it's still clunky, the hardware is still crap, and you still want to throw it into the sea.

Haha, ringing endorsement or what... Thanks :smt023

I've only really been looking for the last week, so nfi what the go is with the current crop. A bit confused as to why the combination of features I want is so fucking hard to find :?. If it could be achieved with NO games or music, I'd be even happier. Am I dreaming??

If only iPhones weren't so pocket-FA1L :?. Needs more iPhone nano or summat...

hmm, i'm much much happier with the iphone in my pocket than any of the nokias (except the 6500) because it's about half the thickness (at least, the 3g is). the n82 is probably the closest to what you're after, except that it doesn't do american umts/3g frequencies.

also, being entirely serious, have you used symbian/s60 for any length of time?

Front surface area is a bit more of a problem for me than volume (li'l pockets). This pretty much rules out candy bars too :?

I haven't had a play with any smartphone OS's. Dunno how I can change this.... I am working on the assumption that WiMo will make me want to break things as much as the real version and if I'm not considering an iPhone, then what else....??

What's the go with Symbian anyway? Honestly wouldn't have the slightest one way or the other.... I'm not especially attached to even getting a smartphone, but I've been lead to believe that one cannot has wifi Skype any other way :?:

(In all likelihood, I will just dither about until something rad comes up, or my current phone dies and I'm forced to drop my standards....)

Re: Mobile Phones

oh right, yeah, iphone loses on surface area.

windows mobile is about as bad as you think, but then symbian is at least just as bad. layout makes you want to shank someone (anything you want to do involves 27 levels of menus), it's slow as shit, crashes all the time ... it's absolutely insane.

the ones with s60 fp3 or whatever (e66, n97, etc) are slightly more civilised and the 5800 is a lot more civilised (but massive) in terms of the layout and not being so slow, but jesus.

speaking of wrist watches, mobile phone wrist watch have just been patented by an Aussie company

http://www.current.com.au/news/article/ZSCITWMVSP.html

"Some models in this current range of smart watch phones and smart phones feature handwriting recognition so you can write text messages. Cooke also demonstrated the LCD screen and multimedia capabilities by playing a Matrix movie."
"“We’re aiming for 100,000-plus in the first year and then increasing 10-fold after that,” he said."

Heard somewhere they'll be like $500

quick, the e71 is pretty much the same as every other e/n series phone. pretty sluggish, really not great. but eh, if you don't mind current nokias (5800/n97 excluded), then the e71 is no worse than the others. keyboard really is small tho.

quick: e71 is actually a really nice feeling phone imo. not as plasticky as most. gets excellent reviews almost unversally (but foo knows more than i).

You should know that it doesnt have a 3.5mm headphone jack - pretty much a dealbreaker i think, spec if oyu want it for travel, as would need to carry separate mp3.

new e72 has 3.5mm and 5mp camera. out in uk but not here yet... I would get that one if you are thinking e71...

i'm looking for phone also...

trying to convince myself that there is something better than iphone.

htc hero looks as close as anyone has got. first android thing i would consider. just dunno about splashing the cash on a stoopid phone...
