Certainly was mate... a good win it was, and I thought we were done for at half time.

Should be a good game this weekend my man.

I second the above D.

Richmond where in with a chance yesterday until the third quarter.

Showing lots of promise.

Cousins has to play on doesn't he?

Yesterday sucked balls.

Rushed home from the city to watch the game on TV (only the third game this year I've been able to see on free-to-air), only to have a mate text me at half time (delayed telecast) and tell me we lost. Gayness compounding a gay result.

Was a good game for the most part, and well done D. You guys killed us in center clearances, absolutely killed us - and we usually win that stat. You were also cleaner with your ball use, and we lacked some serious targets up forward - poor Jack can't do it all week in week out.

Cousins has had a great month Feigs. I think Tim Watson summed it up perfectly... "if you forgot about his past and how old he is - he'd have to play on next year". At the start of the year I was thinking, last year - keep him on as a mentor only, not a player - now I think he should get another year extension to his contract.

He'll go around again.

2013 will be the year of the Tiger.

Go Blues.

Pretty boys? who exactly at the hawks do you think is pretty (apart from Lance Franklin who, actually looks alot like yourself i might add...pretty boy ;)
Shane Crawford and Trent Croad have retired, we have a ginger forward, a bunch of abos, and a bunch of other bloke who im pretty sure aint that pretty, the demons on the other hand have a whole lotta hair gel going on last time i went to see one of their games*...poofs imo

*last time i went to see them play was round 1 2010 vs hawks

needs to pull something massive out of the bag to claw back 6 points in one round.

anyone got any rohipnol? we need to take mark out as early as possible this week to make him forget to enter his tips.

Part 1 was last night mate - and I thought it was very interesting. Part 2 tonight.

I'm a big fan of Ben and have a lot of respect for him. Looking forward to seeing Part 2 tonight.

I hope he plays on the weekend, we'll smash Port if he does (although we should win either way).

holy crap to that.

Such a money making decision to carry it over, apparently the AFL make $15million off the second time round. They need to change the rules!!!

Go Saints! At least it showed they could hold their own

yes, but why do it like that? For what purpose does it serve to re-match the following weekend. Some people paid $1,500 to go on the weekend.

Just another reason why our game is unique, just like we are the only game (AFAIK) to award points for missing the target!
Im all for the draw, we get another grand final weekend!

Good work to AFL in donating $100,000K to 3 charities. And this tickets thing to those who normally wouldnt go, is pretty rad too. whoever those people are, sounds good.

AND issuing medals to those who played last sat too is deserved imo.

so gutted Saints lost, i really felt for them

Collingwood were best on the day, but i think they were definitely lucky there were two GFs cos i don't think this would have been the outcome had there been more play time last week

Great article in the age about illicit vs prescription drugs in the AFL

AFL's drug tests are not only pointless, they may be hazardous

Tom Ormonde
February 4, 2011

http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/societ ... 1afdv.html

St Kilda's woes have exposed the futility of the testing regime.

CONGRATULATIONS to Andrew Demetriou and the AFL. Their year-round testing of footballers for recreational drug use was always an exercise in pointless oppression and posturing. Now it has been exposed as something worse: a potential hazard to players.

With hindsight, the revelation this week that four St Kilda players had been caught bingeing on a mix of sleeping tablets and alcohol at the club's New Zealand training camp should not have been surprising. By policing the use of illicit drugs, the AFL was inevitably courting the risk that some players would switch to legal drugs instead.

Advertisement: Story continues below Medical authorities are clear on the perils of mixing sleeping pills and booze. The US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says the mix can cause ''depressed cardiac and respiratory functions'' and ''increased risk of coma or fatality''.

So, are some AFL players turning to prescription drugs to beat the tests? We can't be certain about the St Kilda players; they haven't fully explained their actions. But we do know that some of the strife Ben Cousins got into involved sleeping pills. And there is a compelling logic to the proposition that footy players who like to get off their heads every now and again might switch to legal drugs to stay ''clean''.

Obviously that's not what the AFL bosses had in mind when they introduced testing. I have no doubt they want the best for the players. But if what happened in New Zealand is true to appearances, then it must call into question the AFL's claims that its testing regime has been a success.

So, what are the tests all about? And why do the AFL and other major sporting bodies bother with them?

I didn't like them from the outset. I thought they were an invasion of privacy, and that it was none of the league's business what players did in their spare time.

Most Australians are not systematically hunted down by their employers for drug use. Why footy players? It's not like there's a public safety issue, such as with airline pilots.

Yes, ecstasy or marijuana use might well impair a player's performance on the field. So what? Drugs can impair anyone at any workplace. Players whose drug-taking affects their performances will get dropped from their teams. That should be sanction enough.

A popular justification for singling out sport stars for drug testing is that they are role models to young people, and must therefore set a good example. The sentiment is laudable, but an utter furphy.

In the main, footy players and other famous people who do drugs do them in private. With the exception of a few notorious rock star types, I am not aware of any public figures who deliberately disclose their drug taking, or promote it as a healthy choice or even a fun thing to do.

If it is decreed that society's role models must be drug-free, consistency and fairness would demand that mandatory testing be extended to a group with far more influence on the young than footy players: the nation's parents. What a concept - most of Australia's adult population subject to random visits from the drug police. Any time, any day.

To be fair to the league, its rhetoric on the drug tests focuses more on a professed concern for the health of the players. But even before this week's scandal, the health argument was on shaky ground.

Like most of society, the AFL embraces a double standard on drugs: demonising the illegal ones while tolerating, if not encouraging, one of the most harmful drugs known to humankind - alcohol.

Some studies suggest that ecstasy, for one, might be less harmful than booze. If the league was responsible in its efforts to protect the health and welfare of players, it would come down just as hard on alcohol abuse as on illicit drugs. (By extension, AFL bosses might also like to curb the consumption of unhealthy food by players - develop a test to detect the ingestion of fried dim sims and KFC).

Many footballers, like many in the wider community, like to get ''out of it'' sometimes. At last count, almost 40 per cent of Australians over 14 had tried illegal drugs. More than 80 per cent were regular drinkers. It's all potentially harmful stuff. And there's sod all that the league or anyone else can do to stop it.

The league's stance is a bit like the endless ''war on drugs'' waged by politicians and the police: ultimately a waste of time and resources, and possibly harmful. In both cases, the main achievement has been to give comfort to wowsers and a false impression that progress is being made.

Most footballers are smart enough not to allow drugs of any kind to ruin their careers or lives. For the more vulnerable souls on club lists, what is needed is more constructive assistance, not punitive testing that can lead them into darker places.

There was constructive talk from St Kilda this week about players having too much time on their hands, and the need to do more to find them work or study outside footy.

Demetriou dismissed their argument, saying hundreds were already undertaking study. That leaves many who aren't. He should sit up and listen. And while he's at it, ditch the stupid drug tests.

so are the Suns and Western Sydney just having practice matches with the other clubs this year? Or are they on the books?

shocked they are putting Campbell Brown up as Suns Captain, love him when he was at Hawthorn, but he is a bit of a trouble maker

Isn't Ablett going to be Captain?

GC Suns are playing AFL this year Liz. GWS Giants start 2012.

The Gold Coast Suns will be playing for the premiership cup this year (if they can win that is) but Greater Western Sydney are not in the league until next year.

Also Campbell Brown is not the Gold Coast Captain, G Ablett is Captain and Nathan Bock Vice Captain.
Whats happening is that both Ablett and Bock are injured for the first pre-season games so Campbell Brown will be the inaugral Captain (he will lead them out as captain for the first game ever).
Ablett will resume as Captain in the regular season.

They will struggle.

Too small and not enough depth - won't have an impact for at least 3 - 4 years.

they'll be good for SuperCoach though. Lots of early draft picks from the past couple of years in that team.
