Re: if you hit the wrong note we'll all 'B Friday'

Post by mrj »

Its friday. You know the drill. Pretend to work for the next 8 hours. Meet someone after work for a drink. Go on about how ur having a quiet one. Smash three pints. Smash some cheap food in China town. Then say yes to the first idea that anyone has for something to do. Smash it through till 4am. Go to bed. Force yourself to do all the things you planned to on Saturday. Repeat Saturday night. Feel like death all Sunday. Go back to work on Monday more tired than when you started the weekend. Never regret a second.

I don't even pretend to work any more :P but, the rest is pretty much spot on.

I have heaps to do this weekend... there's a dubstep night and a 5-7am set at revolver in there somewhere too which might (read: will) throw out the balance of productivity somewhat.

made me think of the bones organ in goonies

Image

which led me to this massive organ

Image

Philadelphia's famous Wanamaker organ. It is the largest operational organ in the world with 6 manuals, some 370 stops and over 30,000 sounding pipes

and that led me to this guy...

for anyone that's interested (you're probably not)..... we do free tours of the town hall here... which sounds boring, but you get to go into the organ (10,000 pipes) and blow through different example pipes and stuff which is waaaay cool and interesting.

today reminds me of this poem by Seamus Heaney called The Early Purges. I could quite happily purge a day like today from my memory.

The Early Purges

I was six when I first saw kittens drown.
Dan Taggart pitched them, 'the scraggy wee shits',
Into a bucket; a frail metal sound,

Soft paws scraping like mad. But their tiny din
Was soon soused. They were slung on the snout
Of the pump and the water pumped in.

'Sure, isn't it better for them now?' Dan said.
Like wet gloves they bobbed and shone till he sluiced
Them out on the dunghill, glossy and dead.

Suddenly frightened, for days I sadly hung
Round the yard, watching the three sogged remains
Turn mealy and crisp as old summer dung

Until I forgot them. But the fear came back
When Dan trapped big rats, snared rabbits, shot crows
Or, with a sickening tug, pulled old hens' necks.

Still, living displaces false sentiments
And now, when shrill pups are prodded to drown
I just shrug, 'Bloody pups'. It makes sense:

'Prevention of cruelty' talk cuts ice in town
Where they consider death unnatural
But on well-run farms pests have to be kept down.

Now the trumpet summons us again - not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are - but a call to lead the ranks of rave out from underneath a long week, this Friday and the next, rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation - a struggle against the common enemies of rave:

Can we forge against these enemies a grand and city wide alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful Friday for all? Will you join in that historic effort?

In the long history of Friday, only a previous few have been granted the role of defending it. We do not shrink from this responsibility - We welcome it. We do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this Friday will light this city and all who dwell within -- and the glow from that fire can not be extinguished.

And so, my fellow ravers: ask not what Friday can do for you - ask what you can do for Friday.

Finally, whether you are citizens of this week or citizens of the next, ask of this Friday the same high standard of clubs, pubs, and parties that you have asked of all others. With a good time our only sure reward, with ourselves as the only judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the Friday we love, asking each others blessing and each others help, but knowing that this Friday, Friday’s work must truly be our own.

The Friday

I rave to Friday, and take my raving slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot hear.
I learn by queuing where I have to go.

We relax by dancing. What is there to do?
I hear my beats dance from ear to ear.
I rave to Friday, and take my raving slow.

Of tunes so close beside me, which are deep?
God bless the club! I shall walk ever there,
And learn by queuing where I have to go.

Laser takes the eye; but light can tell us how?
The lonely climb brown alleys winding stair;
I rave to Friday, and take my raving slow.

Sweet Melbourne has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the Autumn air,
And, lovely, learn by queuing where to go.

This dancing keeps me steady. I should know.
What drum is here is always. And is near.
I rave to Friday, and take my raving slow.
I learn by queuing where I have to go.
He's climbing in your windows, he's snatching your people up.
