Brothers was far less preachy than expected and Tobeys Bulging eyed dinner table performance was freaking amazing.

Milk, well as mentioned earlier by Direkt Mr Penn was great in a good film.

Brilliant movie; deserves to be dusted down and watched again.

I really liked Moon too. I thought Rockwell's performance was pretty good, entertaining and likeable but believed that this could be a real person. So I found I genuinly felt for him when he learnt of his situation and when he ## SPOILER ALLERT## contacted his daughter. I liked how they didn't opt for any over the top WTF moment when he ## SPOILER ALLERT# discovered his double, it was more just an acceptance that he was perhaps losing his mind - the same scenario could have easily been turned into a cheap sci-fi horror/thriller deal with another writer/director. Mostly I just liked the pace of the movie somehow, just how it of steadily and quietly built. Can see how someone might find it boring, I have a bit of a track record of really enjoying films and books that deal with that kind of subject matter myself.

I agree and thats how good sci fi always works. With slow-paced character and plot developent and an underlying, latent tension. You dont need the monsters, explosions or mad graphics to create good sci fi and this film is a testament to that.

Haven't seen the new Solaris myself. Its been on my list for a while. Soundtracks can make a sci-fi (or a lot of films) I reckon. The soundtrack for Sunshine was epic (Underworld did much of it) and it's probably one of my fav sci-fi as a result. It had a few bits I didn't think were great, the supernatural crazy dude at the end was a bit half-arsed - felt it was a little silly and took away from the real drama which for me was just the enormity of the task they had. Were a few scientific furfies in it as well unfortunately. But the scene where Capa is trying to get out of the ship in his big suit as the payload is detaching accompanying score is fucking epic imo. Soundtrack all through is great really imo! Probably accounts for most of my enjoyment of the film heh.

Pandorum didn't do much for me. Like the idea of it but just felt like a horror/slasher in the end to me.

i read that the originoal cut for event horizon was a lot more 'suspense' than 'horror' (changed due to precreening feedback) - a sort of the shining in space... it turned out pretty b grade but it would have been good to see it in its intended form

needed more space stars and stuff but still was pretty good

awesome end bit with web of galaxies

i find 3d shots of people/normal scenes too busy with depth of field - distracting and too much time focusing on the 3d aspect. seems to suit CGI much more

saw RED on Saturday night with Olista, Hardy etc

was okay but wouldn't really recommend it. i reckon its a wait for dvd or tv. the others seemed to like it more though. maybe i wasn't in the mood for it, but it seemed so set up each time a line was said. John Malkovich(sp?) saved it enough for me, he was well funny

Watched Factotum on the weekend. It's a perfectly fine movie, but it also doesn't go anywhere. The whole movie feels like its setting up for some event, or some crisis, but it never happens. Maybe because the whole movie is a crisis, the guys life is a crisis. It gets its point across quite well and all that, and a its great depiction of the sad realities of alcoholism, but i think you have to read the guys books to find it interesting.

Also watched Half Nelson. Ryan Gosling is awesome in this, as he was in Lars and the real girl. Here he plays a character with an actual personality though so he's better in this, certainly evidenced by the fact he got an Oscar nomination for this movie. Is a bit like Factotum in some ways in that it feel like its building to some sort of event that never comes, but I'm starting to wonder that whether I expect that from movies because I've been conditioned by the whole hollywood fomula of set-up, crisis, resolution. Anyways, a great portrait of the day to day of a functioning drug addict, it helps that Gosling in the lead is incredibely likeable, even when he's being an asshole. The movie does have a punchline in a way, but I felt its more subtle than what we are used to, and certainly forces you to analyse the characters and their interactions, even to imagine what they think and what they expect of each other.

I'd forget Factotum, but defintiely watch Half Nelson.

saw exit thru the gift shop the other night finally. really good imo. some hilarious ironies and generally interesting look at the 'life' attached street artists.
