Arts thread

Post by stovequeen »

For any peeps interested in the arts: what's new, what's on?, general info, etc..

to get us started...

NGV Australia (Ian Potter) - Bill Henson from 23 April

Born in Melbourne, Henson is one of Australias foremost photographers. Well worth checking out. I went to the Sydney showing a month back. I can't recommend it highly enough. Strong, emotive, dramatic images and pieces.

Great photo's Fi, they seem to have a texture like an oil painting. Amazing shades of colour too.

I'm actually a big fan of the Fauvist movement, and in particular, Vlaminck.

Yeh I love the colours. Internet pics don't really do the paintings much justice though - theres also a real texture to the brush strokes you can't see over the net.

Internet pics and pics in books never do justice! On some of those Fauves paintings, you can actually see the canvas! I remember seeing "Blue Poles" for the first time only after seeing pics of it in books and being amazed at what I actually saw, by seeing it in the "flesh."

oh Ag3nT[]0raNg3 re: Ken Done...thats not such a throwaway comment, Done would probably sight the Fauves early 20th cen.art movement as an influence!

funny how Charles Saatchi is able to 'find' artists doing very similar stuff to his last 'discovery' not long after they tell him to get fucked. here's to the revolution pushing him and Nigella to the wall pronto. :|

true, true. I heard that they've banned students sketching as of last year though, does anyone know if this is true? :?

i still reckon charles saatchi has done incredible things for the art scene...

he has definitely contributed and made people able to achieve things they otherwise would never have done...

he didn't discover nitsch by the way ;)
he's been big since the 70s :)

yeah that's right.

my boy is an artist / and teaches high school art - he was telling me a while back that they all received notice last year that pens / pencils etc aren't permitted in the NGV at all anymore...

so not only can the kids not scetch they can't even take notes!

we'll have to agree to disagree! applying marketing techniques to art doesn't really add to much to the cultural values - it just leaves us with Tracy Emin!! :P

anyway, hasn't he been going on about painting being the new installation/video art?
Friday wrote:he didn't discover nitsch by the way ;)

I know, but admitting that would have ruined a good rant. :)

and they wonder why numbers are down. the ATO has also been a big factor in the reduction of private funding to the arts as well. meh.

I'm with you on the Blue Poles comment. I remember the contraversy when it was purchased, and then probably 10 yrs later I get to stand in front of it.... and all I could think was OMG! It is a huge and amazing work.

I'm nuts for art galleries but so rarely do i go in my home town. I've never even set foot in the NGV! It's something i do when I'm on holidays outta town. So big ups to Plasmo for taking me down to the Stencil Festival yesterday. I did spend a bit of time marvelling at the building more than the art tho :P

Art gallery trip in Wellington coming up! :)

there has always been some confusion amongst the people working there as to whether or not this is allowed. i know that the insurance for the "blockbusters", like the Impressionists, doesn't allow people to bring stuff in that could potentially deface the work...this is ridiculous! artists have ALWAYS studied the work of old masters...i've said before that it's like telling a horticulturist they can't take notes in a forest. i hate the gallery for even thinking of not allowing the public to make notes from publicly owed work.

there's an opening at ACCA (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, 111 Sturt St, Sth Melb) next Monday, 14th March @ 6.30 for "new05" which is part of a series of new commissions for the space by australian artists. it's always been good in the past, so it should be worth a visit. it's on until 15th may.

wow what a visionary...and how convienient that painting is so much more tradeable.

although i do agree that, with the development of digital media, painting and drawing is being appreciated more. it's not like installation/video has actually avoided the art market. and most of what i've seen is boring; the medium as the message/art for art's sake... :?

You're getting quite proficient with the old google image search Steve. Or do you have access to some private squirrel-related search engine that no-one knows about?
