not a fan of voda? i'm with them in the uk (still optus here) and have been pretty impressed with a few things ... getting £3 of 'iou' credit when you run out that gets taken off your next topup, having pretty sensible data roaming charges and smsing you to say 'you've used £3, it'll cost you so much for your next lot of data', vodafone passport which means roaming is just a flagfall + your normal rates, etc. istr their plans here being a bit shit though, and i guess coverage is a lot more marginal. then again i can't get fucking optus reception two blocks away from optus oval, so.

also i've now cut two sim cards up into micro-sims with scissors and both have survived fine.

I love Voda (not that they do any of those things in Aust, they do in NZ though), but you can't get reception inside a Telstra exchange / building. Which is not really ideal for us.

optus have been a constant letdown, but at least it's well-intentioned incompetence rather than telstra's active malice and hate for all their customers i guess. have telstra improved their pricing any? the two things that swayed me towards optus were reasonable data pricing, as well as getting international calls for the same price as domestic.

Thanks! Yeah the reception is pretty average with optus sometimes. The data you get with telstra ain't that much though. Only 500mb + 500mb bonus til november. I think optus is 1gb. But i mostly use data at home on my wireless nowadays anyway so i don't think that should be a problem.

It's 500mb + 500mb, so 1gb/month for the life of the contract if you sign up before November.

Ah ok.. well that's good then! Sounds like their coverage and data speeds are way better than optus. Think i'm gonna make the change soon then.

For those interested in jailbreaking their iphone.. So easy now!
Comex has just released the most eagerly awaited tool to jailbreak iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

It’s called JailbreakMe and is the world’s first solution to jailbreak iPhone 4. Comex’s solution is the mother of all jailbreaking solutions for iDevices as an iDevice can be jailbroken using Mobile Safari.

JailbreakMe 2.0 supports the following devices and iOS:

iPod Touch 1G on iOS 3.1.2

iPod Touch 1G on iOS 3.1.3

iPod Touch 2G on iOS 3.1.2

iPod Touch 2G on iOS 3.1.3

iPod Touch 2G on iOS 4.0

iPod Touch 3G on iOS 3.1.2

iPod Touch 3G on iOS 3.1.3

iPod Touch 3G on iOS 4.0

iPad on iOS 3.2

iPad on iOS 3.2.1 (though we are hearing that users are facing issues)

iPhone 3G on iOS 3.1.2

iPhone 3G on iOS 3.1.3

iPhone 3G on iOS 4.0

iPhone 3G on iOS 4.0.1

iPhone 3G[S] iOS on 3.1.2

iPhone 3G[S] iOS on 3.1.3

iPhone 3G[S] iOS on 4.0

iPhone 3G[S] iOS on 4.0.1

iPhone 4 on iOS 4.0

iPhone 4 on iOS 4.0.1

Few things that you should do or know before you proceed:

It is always a good idea to take a backup of your iPhone before you hack it, refer to this post for more details.

Here are some of the known issues and Comex is working hard to fix them:

It does not work on iPad running iOS 3.2.1

Some users have reported issue with MMS

JailbreakMe does not hactivate your iPhone, so your iPhone should be activated via iTunes first. You can checkout this article to hactivate your iPhone without an official iPhone carrier SIM or simply borrow your friends official iPhone SIM to activate your iPhone.

JailbreakMe does not unlock your iPhone. You can install Ultrasn0w to unlock iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. iPhone 4 users need to wait for some more time as iPhone Dev Team is working on it.

Some users are reporting missing pixels issue.

All you need to do is visit http://www.jailbreakme.com on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad’s Mobile Safari browser and swipe on the ‘slide to jailbreak’ button and wait for the process to complete to jailbreak it. You will see the following screens during the entire process.

ImageImage
ImageImage

Yup, I'm not kidding, it’s really that simple. I just tried it out and it works like a charm.

We thought Spirit was an easy to jailbreak an iPhone but JailbreakMe is even easier. Kudos to Comex and team for all the hard work in releasing the tool.

As always, please let us know how it goes.

Thanks everyone for the tip!

Update 1:

Adding http://beta.leimobile.com/repo/ in Cydia and installing their package should fix MMS issues for T-Mobile users.

Update 2:

If JailbreakMe.com doesn't work for you then you can try out this alternative link: http://jailbreakme.modmyi.com/

Update 3:

Comex has reproduced the MMS/FaceTime issue that users have been reporting, which should help in fixing the issue.

Update 4:

If you want to unlock your iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G then you need to first jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 4 or iOS 4.0.1 using JailbreakMe and then install Ultrasn0w 0.93 to unlock your iPhone.

Update 5:

It looks like Comex has found the solution for the MMS/FaceTime issue.

We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve any further updates. So stay tuned here at iPhone Hacksor follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.

Well it depends what you care about on your iphone really. I like to have things the way i want them rather than just stock standard. Also like being able to get the apps that are expensive like TomTom through Appulo.us.

It's just great for tweaking things to make them better/easier. Like i just found this cool tweek to let me use the volume buttons as camera buttons in any camera apps cos it's shitty having to tap the screen especially if you're taking a photo of yourself and someone else, etc.

Anyway, there's thousands of cool things you can do but i think it's more to do with being a technology nerd.

so after restoring my phone and linking it to my new lappy, when i go to sync a new app or music to it, it says that it will overwrite what's currently on there. all the apps are on the phone that i'd had at home, so thankfully that part wasn't an issue, but i don't want to lose them all if i want to put something different on there.

where exactly does it save to when you back everything up, or is there a way you can back it up to a particular location? so confused.

I think if you right click on the iPhone on the left hand side in iTunes and select "sync applications" it'll put them on your puter... i think.
