My life that Aussie carriers (or the chosen carrier, probably Telstra) makes it way to expensive, because they can, and have since mobiles were the norm.
Assholes.

Corr, should the battery die on you Apple has just announced a super service that will replace it for $79USD!
You only have to send off the phone, get all the data erased and be without it for 3days.

First you get her name. Then you get her number. Then you get some get some in the back seat of a hummer!
data erasing is standard procedure, really (well, don't know about N, but all laptop vendors will trash your hard drive, and thus understand perfectly when you refuse to send the hard drive as well -- in fact, I think IBM recommend it these days, and it's always been mandatory for our company laptops). and 3 days is pretty damn quick if you ask me. but it's pretty lame that it needs replacing like that.saintberry wrote:You only have to send off the phone, get all the data erased and be without it for 3days.
that video never loads for me ... i assume he's making fat wads of cash off ebay?

3 days is quick... but thats not the point. When you think about it, its fucking slow when you should be able to purchase a battery off the internet and take 30seconds out of your life to replace it yourself. Heres a thought: Why not just have a replaceable battery that doesn't cost $79UDS?fooishbar wrote:data erasing is standard procedure, really (well, don't know about N, but all laptop vendors will trash your hard drive, and thus understand perfectly when you refuse to send the hard drive as well -- in fact, I think IBM recommend it these days, and it's always been mandatory for our company laptops). and 3 days is pretty damn quick if you ask me. but it's pretty lame that it needs replacing like that.saintberry wrote:You only have to send off the phone, get all the data erased and be without it for 3days.
Usable products. Bah!
Oh and its rated @ 18 months.... $79USD battery that will last 18months. That thing must be drawing a few Watts.

If Telstra doesnt want it then we might not get it.jbs wrote:Not from what I hear round the traps. They don't want to touch it.lynt wrote: Aussie carriers (or the chosen carrier, probably Telstra)
"Telstra is the only telco actually using the old-generation style network that Cingular in the US is using to power the iPhone. Optus, Vodafone and 3 (and Telstra, but Telstra still maintains and has good coverage on their old system) have all much better and modern data services, which, unfortunately, are not compatible with the iPhone, due to the USA being a generation behind in mobile technology."
However the big wigs at Telstra including Sol, are not fans of the iPhone at all and have been quite vocal about it.

Would hate it if we didn't get the iPhone on our shores

yep, but it's worth just waiting. first release models always have bugs and i'm sure that they'll bring in gsm etc support.lynt wrote:So like, excuse my total dumb knowledge of mobile phones.. but can we buy an US iPhone to use for iPod and Wifi purposes and then when an Aus carrier comes, make the switch?

Gotcha!
The Iphone has to be activated once before you can use the other features like ipod and Wifi. Bummer but look on the net for hacks etc.
Edit: the hacks out already --> http://nanocr.eu/2007/07/03/iphone-without-att/

covers things nicely.
The ipod / phone is nice,
but there is technically superior stuff out there, cheaper, but companies that couldn't sell sex in amsterdam.
Madox clears everything up, and given the fact my fucken ipod will not switch on, or recharge from no error on my part, just because its a piece of shit, the i phone can eat a dick.

if you're worried about governments snooping on your data, then head for the shack in the hills. that article never showed any proof presented by the russian 'reverse engineering' exercise, anyway.unsoundbwoy wrote:http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/ju ... llance.htm

assuming your carrier is AT&T (which it is), then they already have your SMSes and recent calls. oh, and web history, too. if you don't want anyone snooping on those, don't avoid the phone: avoid phone networks.conspiracy wrote:"A built-in function which sends all data from an iPhone to a specified web-server. Contacts from a phonebook, SMS, recent calls, history of Safari browser - all your personal information can be stolen."
The module could act as a backdoor for trojan developers or AT & T, said the report, adding that "government structures" would have access to the information.
(seriously, this is not just hypothetical. carriers are required by law to have data-collecting units for phone tapping and other information-gathering. someone used this in vodafone greece to snoop on the prime minister and many other high-up figures.)
