just put one stubbie in the fridge and crack that too see if it has carbonated up proper yet. then call me when they are all carb'd up ;)

Posted: Wed Aug 15, 2007 12:37 pm
by breaksRbest
It's been a bit cold, so I'm worried that they haven't carbonated properly

Should the temperature of the stored bottles be above a certain temp?

Posted: Wed Aug 15, 2007 12:47 pm
by Fents
just room temp mate. warmer they are the quicker they will carb tho.

Just wack em in a kitchen cupboard somewhere if u have space...

Some people get and old lamp and whack that in the cupboard too and have it set to a timer so it comes on maybe everyhour for like 10mins...

Mine just sit in the cold downstairs bar but they carb up eventually.

they're in the bottom of the pantry.

might get myself a heat tray

Posted: Wed Aug 15, 2007 12:51 pm

just tuck em up in a blankie, no need to spend an extra $40 or $50 on a heat pad, plenty of other things you need first (2nd fermentor wink wink).

Hot water cupboard use to be perfect for this.
EXcept I once exploded some bottles by upping the sugar level in the bottles rather than the prefermented mix.

WORD. reckon I should go a 60 Litre fermenter next time, or stay with the 23?

60 litres is ALOT of Beer, especialy if you fuck up a batch

Posted: Wed Aug 15, 2007 1:29 pm
by Fents
Thats up to you. I got given one. Yes it is alot of beer if it fucks up. Its also a shitload of beer when you make a wicked batch!

But remember you can also do a normal batch in a 60lt too.

I'd prob get both.

Oh and bunnings sell fermentors too mate way cheaper than homebrew stores, all you need to do is drill a hole in the lid for the airlock and gromett. heads up ;)

I have 20 Litres of ale waiting for me at home to be kegged. think i'll save it for the qld crew that are coming down.

yeah I am, I've sent him a query asking if they also sell the stainless steel waterproof probe (coz I want the measurement to come directly from the fermenter) and also teh box to house it in as it's sold seperately

Yeah, I seriously don't have a cupboard spare - let alone somewhere to put the fermenter while fermenting... anyone been to my flat (with no outside area at all) will attest.

I'm sure I could wack it in the bathroom, but she's a small flat and I reckon I'd stink the place out fermenting in my bathroom - which is right next door to my bedroom and studio.

At least - the old mans homebrew reaks when it's fermenting - that's what I'm going off.

should not smell at all really mate and any smell is a pleasent one not unpleasant....they only thing that would piss you off is the noise i reckon...going to sleep to bloop blopp blopp is not that much fun.

Posted: Tue Jan 22, 2008 12:44 pm

Yeah, got ya mate... the ol' blop, blop doesn't sound the best!

My old mans homebrew tends to smell like farts to stale yeasty beer (depending on where it is in the fermentation process)... Tastes damn good when done, but does stink out our second bathroom back in Shepp.

Posted: Tue Jan 22, 2008 12:48 pm
by breaksRbest
yeah, there can be a slight 'egg fart' smell, but I only notice it if I open the cupboard, and it's not very strong

fents, is that your temp controller? If so, where'd you get the probe & box from?

Posted: Tue Jan 22, 2008 12:52 pm
by Fents
nope thats just a google image mate.

im getting an upright freezer and fitting one prob in the next two weeks.

The probe should come with it and you have to build a box yourself. Have a read of thins :

Tried to do a Hoegaarden brew with the ol' man over Easter - will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I'm tipping there's too much orange and not enough coriander flavour already.

Whatever the past tense for winging it is, that's what we did.

Brewed up a bavarian wheat beer, steeped orange zest in boiling water, and also steeped coriander in boiling water - drained and dumped.... slightly colder than normal fermentation... here's hoping.

onto it :smt023

Direktor, how much did you use? I have a recipe that says 15g of Coriander and 2 Tablespoons of Orange Zest.
Hope it works out for ya.

Hmmm..... maybe 1/2 cupful of coriander, steeped and then water thrown in...

And maybe a little more than 2 teaspons of orange zest....
