Buying online/Import tax

Post by beatnick »

Hey Guys,

I'm just about to buy a set of monitors (Genelec's :D) from an online retailer and have them sent to Aus so when I turn up they will be waiting. :D

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had any experience in buying gear online and am I going to get stung on tax??

Any heads up would be mucho appreciado!

sometimes you get lucky (daft/generous customs guy), and often you can get people to tick gift, but sometimes it's pretty obvious that they're just taking the piss. you might get lucky, but you might well get screwed for up to 30%.

i've had loads of stuff sent to me, sometimes worked out, often not.

And so where do you pay this tax? Do they hold your goods untill you pay or do they just send you a bill?

Thanks for all your help!

depends who you ship with. most will give you a call while it's held in customs and get you to pay it via credit card, and release it as soon as that's done. some will release instantly and just bill you, but that's pretty rare, and only if you have mad expensive shipping.

That is a good price but I can get a pair for $954 USD, so even after tax still cheaper to get them overseas.

Let's just pray nothing goes wrong with them! Coz then you'll be in trouble.

Awesome monitors though.

you'll need to get the sender to declare the value of the speakers to under a thousand au dollars to avoid any import tax

you risk them getting lost/stolen but u wont pay the tax

must be different for different tings. i've had to pay on stuff well under a grand a few times, and managed to talk someone out of $600 worth of electronic gear.

Australian Customs wrote:All goods (except for tobacco products and alcoholic beverages) may be imported duty and tax free if their value is $1,000 or less.
Note: However, where there are multiple packages to the same addressee in Australia from a single consignor overseas that arrive at about the same time, then the value of all packages will be combined for duty and tax assessment purposes. Refer to example 1.
