Anyone use a linux machine for audio?

hey there,

I only really need basic recording, cut paste, edit... volume leveling and basic compression effects etc.

I have installed Ubuntu Studio which seams pretty good, I just can't get my M-Audio Delta44 sound card to record.... I can get the software to load WAVs etc, and manipulate them accordingly, but the recording functions don't appear to be working.... I've tried to get it working in all the included programs... need halp

Mmm... dude, that's not really in the spirit of Linux, asking other people to solve your problems... you should only be installing Linux if you enjoy spending your time getting things working and configuring shit that most people don't care about.

eh, every time i install windows nothing works at all, and maybe you can tell me why half the time my os x laptop fails to suspend and tries to cook itself to death in my bag then?

what are you using to record? try installing pavumeter to see the volume across all your devices: it could simply be using the wrong device to record from. also, which version of ubuntu are you running?

Yeah, I just tried recording a mix in Windows XP (using cool edit pro) and it came out all fucked up a crackly for no apparent reason..I tried testing by recording a few bars of music from a record and it works fine.... don't really want to record a whole mix again just to find out it's going to happen again. fucking sucked tbh

I'm running 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope + ubuntu studio (which installed all supported sound and video programs automatically)

Right, so I just ran Pulse Audio Volume meter.... it's showing no level at all, even on playback, even though I can hear the audio I can only adjust the volume on the program playing the audio, not the system volume.

latest ed of ComputerMusic has a nice feature on linux audio.
daw, vsts etc

could scan it or summin. ill see if theres any basics about working with soundcards 1st

I heard M-Audio gear IS compatible with linux.
perhaps it's a whole new driver.

or you can try Ardour.
but don't think it's an issue with the program.

That's annoying. I'd say it's probably your soundcard/drivers not being up to scratch, or you were recording the mix too hot. Remember to kill all unnecessary running processes if you're gunna do something like record audio for an hour or two...

Try running alsamixer and check volume isn't down on some of the input channels. I've been trying xwax on ubuntu studio, with moderate success. A lot of the soundcard setup is still largely voodoo magic though, I don't ask questions until something breaks.

Sound production on Linux won't match Windows or Apple environments for a long time I think. I've been using Linux as my main OS for years now and the only reason I use windows is for cubase.

M-Audio has great support under Linux, there's ALSA and OSS drivers available (my M-Audio 2496 works great using ossv4). I have had nothing but problems using pulse audio and alsa though, so switched to OSS a while back - it's quick and easy, definitely recommend it (good guide here, used this on a mates pc: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound). My personal system is ArchLinux built up from scratch. I have a lot of spare time >.>

You also might want to check out http://www.64studio.com/ I haven't used it extensively but it looks very comprehensive so far.
