so whats the difference other than colour and DVD drive (does that come standard? or is an install job)

It comes standard.

The difference is basically cosmetic mate. But it is a pretty sweet looking unit.

Other than that, CD/DVD drive, 128MB RAM maxed out and blue LED screen.

What's the dealio with the MPC 2000XL these days? Are they still a pretty good unit? Im thinking of picking one up..?

If i can get one for under 1K would i better better of spending a bit more and getting the mpc500 or mpc1000?

The mpc2000xl with all factory options and the card reader mod installed is a quality machine.
The mpc500 is full of nasty bugs that Akai will most likely never fix...
The mpc1000 is a quality machine with the option of an alternate operating system..
