Post by nic »

some beats i have been working on, basically hiphop i dunno. both unfinished and having trouble with arrangement tbh, on crap headphones mixdown, and want them short time wise.

tell me what you think. :retzielikes: :brohugs:

2nd one is rad.

Would go down well in a half time rave before murkmen start playing substep and ruin the day.

I can see the potential for some r'n'b grovve styled slow handbag with an electro tinge.
Let me know if you need me to do a cameo appearance with some french chicks in your video.

Bangin. Very little required now other than subtle finishing touches. Maybe a little dry though, like it needs some... air or something.

[ponders how to elaborate]

Ok. (Wanker alert) If you think about it like looking out a train window, foreground objects move quickly while what's in the distance moves slowly. So while the foreground elements are all there in these tunes, you might want to consider some (very subtle) background, air, atmosphere. I'm not sure what to call it. And not necessarily reverb, there's lots of other ways about it.

IMO.

thanks for the feedback and listening to my slow handbag beats

iv been working on adding some 'character' to a few accent sounds today and thinking about ways of giving them some space in the mix (the parrralllax foreground background logic you mention) both mixes are pretty much completely dry atm. added some 'air' and sidechained it to the percussion as well, unsure if its working yet though. need to do some subtle panning on noises as well.

1st one - not much low end to speak off - not sure if that was deliberate lo-fi or due to headphones mixdown - but either way I think it works well. Bassline is in a different key/out of tune from other elements which I find quite distracting. Take the bit from 2 mins onward - underlying chords in the breakdown sound fine on their own - not sure what the chords but the root note is a D, then the stabs come in with Gminor which is a little awkward but not completely incompatible, but then when the bassline comes in at 2:15 it's forcing the root note to F and it just doesn't gel. If you brought that up to a D it would be more musically coherent, although it would also feel 'happier' and change the feel of the tune alot. You could maybe pull the chords into line with the bline to keep the darker F feel.

Second one - VibesquaD - Memebers Only sample? hehe. Or maybe same preset. This one has a bit more low end balance, quite a different tone balance overall to the first one. Elements are out of key with eachother again, but isn't as distracting. Results in more of a atonal techno feel.

I think you do a bit of work on musical theory/chords your melodic ideas would be done a lot more justice.

keep it up, bro etc.

awsome thanks for taking the time to write that flippo, dboy etc.
i havent a musical background at all so im starting to look into some basic musical theory to get some of these elements to gel better, probably teh least musical person i know :(.
its all sample based, noises iv grabbed and made, resampled, slogged around - no synths or patches to speak of. trying to make slow percussive drummy 4 x 4, but then start losing the plot after 20 mins and reach for teh 80's and tearout basslicks.

hey nic

do like

I think you should attempt to condense the arrangements and switch between themes more frequently.

these have quite progressive arrangements but I dont think thats the vibe you're going for IMO.

more changes, more frequently and these will work better for me.
