New Toys @ Winter NAMM 2011

Post by Direkt »

Hey guys,

Just got back from Winter NAMM @ Anaheim, LA. Was a lot of cool stuff announced, particularly from my camp - some of the picks of the bunch:

Numark NS6 (4-deck software controller with audio I/O)

There was also the Rane Serato SL4 and new Pioneer controllers unveiled. Lots more too...

You were at the show?

PS: if you liked the look and sound of them, shouldn't that be the main thing? Particularly the sound?

It wasn't plugged in to allow me to use it, it was in demo mode - but I did get to feel the platters, buttons, rotaries and pick it up. Solid unit - metal casing and audio mixer onboard, running 4-channel of Serato. It'll also drive Traktor, or any other DVS you chose to use. I'm biased, but I think it will be an awesome unit. The only negative is it will cost more than the S4, it'll be more in the Pioneer end of town as Numark have again gone with quality components and build quality (like the NS7 and V7 before).

As far as Serato controllers go - the money is with S4, NS7 (can pick these up real cheap now - they're limited to 2-channels though, and weigh quite a bit - not exactly portable), V7 and the as yet unreleased NS6. We're expecting the NS6 to hit Australia mid June.

Has anyone see the promo video for the new Pioneer DVS. Has a DJ who I've never heard of doing no DJing beyond just twisting effects nobs in a dramatic fashion and making the terrible music sounds 10 times worse. Worst marketing ever. It doesn't help that the S4 promo video's with DJ shifty and the like are fucking rad.

Pioneer stuff ain't going to be as cheap as S4 either.

$1499 for the 4-channel DDJT1 Traktor version. Plastic casing and I'm not sure it has many audio ins on it. March release in Oz, released in UK this weekend.

Oddly enough, the 2-channel Serato Itch version (S1) will be going for $1799.

The 10 guitar pedals are made of "heavy duty stainless steel". The EIE has an aluminium case.
Yes, the controller keyboard is made of plastic, but so are all controller keyboards. It'd weigh a tonne if it were to be made of metal.

Did you actually see them?

Hey, everyone's entitled to an opinion... but it's always a good idea to at least see/hear what you're talking about before expressing those opinions.

You do have a point though. These are cheap products, monetarily speaking.

I'd be expecting pricing in Oz to be around:

Delay: $219
Tri-mode OD: $259
Comp: $145

SL4 will get me saving up. I hope all clubs adopt this.. the 2x USB inputs are really something very useful for changeovers...
