too soft
too soft
I been fiddleing with some production for a while. I think I listened to too much ambient/I.D.M and long, builind up but never actually getting anywhere post rock through uni. Now everything i write is ambient. Even if i sit down to write some beats (and i love my beats), it go into this semi comatosed state and end up getting traped into subtle wrirling noises, minimal drums, soft piano and scratchy tape loop sleepy time go to bed now stuff. Dont get me wrong I love beats they just never come out.
Whats the key? Should I get pissed and fired up first?
Anyone want to take some of my noises and put beats and dancefloor freindly structure to them? anything, hiphop, breaks, DnB. I'm useing reason.

Holy crap. I know *exactly* what you mean. I'd even start with the intent of writing some dance music (usually breaks) and then find I'd just wallow into some soft pad and end up with something really mellow. I'd be happy if I could come up with something like Acapulco - Aphasia (sic?) that's sort of a "mellow" breaks but it never worked. Only now I've started by setting a BPM, focusing on the bass, snare and kick, and THEN when I've got a solid foundation that makes me tap my feet I begin working on the melody and other parts. I always used to use loads of spacey echoey pads and lots of chords, but I've shyed away from delays, reverbs and other things that "muddy" up the sound when focusing on dance music. You really need to get a punchy sound so I always try and start with completely dry synths. If they sound good dry, they're going to sound better with a tiny bit (and I mean tiny) of reverb or delay just for dimension and depth. I went and bought a book (The Mixing Engineers handbook, it's on Amazon) and that was really useful in giving a better understanding of what I should and shouldn't be doing for different genres of music. I also started mixing together a lot of other people's tracks in Ableton, and that's (hopefully) given me a better understanding of what you should/shouldn't do for electro/breaks/house/whatever...

bro i think the trick is not to try too hard to make something, if ambient and downtempo is what you do, and what comes outta your head, make it! its guaranteed to be more original and youre guaranteed to develop your own sound so much quicker if u just let it come outflippo wrote:I been fiddleing with some production for a while. i used to try and emulate styles of tunes i loved, but found theonly times i ever finished tunes were when i was totally absorbed in what i was making and it was from my own thought n feeling
its much better to just let what flows flow, and leave the rest. dont try too hard.
