ADSL will use a RJ-16 jacked cable from the modem to the wall. you could potentially use a RJ-45 cable (i.e. ethernet) as well, but it all depends on your modem's jacks.

kind of.

it should run something like:

Code: Select all

ADSL modem (out) Voice telephone (out)
                    | |
                    \ /
                   Line filter box
                           |
                   Telephone line (wall)
HTH, guy.

modem goes direct into the phone line, filter goes between line and whatever phone you wanna use. RJ11 is the cable you need to use (standard telephone cable). RJ12 should work ok too.

i just have a filter at the moment.
maybe. not sure. depends on your provider, modem, etcetera etc. :)
AC23_steve wrote:i need to get this shit a1 so i know the problem is OS X based, dont know the ins and outs compared to windows
this is all OS independant shit, mate. :smt018

your hardware network layer is totally below the OS, let alone the TCP/IP layer.

mate, I can see the problem immediately. your phone should be plugged into the 'local phone' jack.. not the modem.

true. my old netgear modem had a phone line out so i did not need a splitter.

my filter only has in and out and i only have one phone hole in the wall.

wtf, whats the point of a splitter if it doesn't filter anything? in effect its a
a double adapter if it doesn't

unless we are using the term "splitter" in place of what in fact is a double
adapter.

To help out steve, depending on how many phone lines you have in your
place you might need/want a splitter.

I have on in my roof that is hard wired, so that when my line enters my
house I have it split into 2 lines, one for my ADSL (unfiltered) and one
for the rest of my phones in my house (filtered).

A couple of suggestions for trouble shooting.

Make sure you have the filter the right way around (if its not labeled)
although that would prolly not effect line sync.

What modem do you have? if its the type with a web interface, run a
diagnostic on it and post up the results here, might be able to shed some
more light on the problem in question.

And yes, ADSL only uses 1 twisted pair. (same as phone)

I also think there need to be some term clarification.

What System is refering to as "Line Filter Box" is actually (I believe) an
"in line splitter" or "central filter"

genrally a splitter is hardwired into the house before the wall outlets
so you have one wall port that is unfiltered for the DSL and the others
are filtered for the phones (like my house). The one in the picture below
they call a "central line filter" because you dont have to hardwire it.

like so

Image

A splitter configuration with multiple phones looks like this

Code: Select all

                                         _ _ _ _ ADSL Model (unfiltered)
                                        /
Telephone line (wall) ------- [Splitter]
                                        \_ _ _ _ _ Telephone (filtered)
                                         \
                                          \_ _ _ _ _ Telephone (filtered)
A filter looks like this, and is that normally comes with a modem
Image

A filter configuration with multiple phones would look like this

Code: Select all

                                    _ _ _[filter]_ _ Telephone (filtered)
                                   /
                                _ /_ _ _ ADSL Model (unfiltered)
                               /
Telephone line (wall) ---------
                               \_ _ _ [filter]_ _ _ Telephone (filtered)
                                \
                                 \_ _ _ [filter]_ _ _ Telephone (filtered)
Hope that helps.

i've troubleshooted ADSL over the phone hundreds of times working for an ISP ... it can be a pain, but theres so much to check.

there are a number of things that will affect you synchronising (sync, the flashing adsl light).

1. your phones. that is why you have filters, to filter out the different frequencies. if you have more than three phones in your house, you need a CENTRAL SPLITTER, which is installed by an electrician. it is put in where you phone line enters your house and allows only one connection unfiltered - your chosen ADSL point.

if you have three or less phones, you must put a phone line filter inbetween the phone and the wall socket.

any phones or other devices connected to a line with an ADSL signal may affect the ability for the modem to detect the signal - filters are used to help split the frequency ranges ... this doesnt always work.

2. the provisioning of the ADSL line - they don't always do it properly ... things fuck up, they forget things ... you just have to troubleshoot it all fully before they will investigate it.

3. check hardware - try new phone cables, they don't always work out of the box. also, the length of the cable should not really exceed 10 metres (5 even), otherwise the signal attenuation suffers.

------------------

you should do an isolation test if nothing else works. this involves unplugged ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING from your telephone line except for the ADSL modem itself. it should be plugged into the closest wall socket to where you phone line enters your house and with a known-to-be-working-well (that is, not crackling and works normally) phone cable .... no longer than 5metres.

got more for you to try, and diagrams, if you need more help.

----------------------

with filters:

Code: Select all

[wall socket] ------> line filter ------> phone
[wall socket] ------> line filter ------> phone
[wall socket] ------> line filter ------> phone
[wall socket] ------> ADSL modem.

you can have one wallsocket and put a double adapter, once its doubled, treat them as two separate points ... so ...

Code: Select all

[wall socket] -------> line filter -------> phone
              -------> ADSL modem.
if you have a central splitter installed in your house (that is, a hardwired one in your roof/wall, not the 'line filter splitter' things), you dont need to do anything except nominate which point you want the ADSL on (the computer room, say).
