is this hosting going to be reliable for posing mixes ??

because currently right now i am undecided about what to do for web hosting and domains.

I want to buy a domain and get some hosting, question is whether i buy just the domain from http://www.cheapdomains.com.au/ for $38 for 2 years. and then just use this free service to host mixes. (as i already have a small webspace with internet provider).
Or

Whether to get a domain name and a package or web hosting from somewhere to have my mixes on the hosting there all the time and reliable. but pay alot more.
If i choose this option i need to find a good web hoster that does aussie domains and good web hosting prices. ne one know ne ???

if you're looking for hosting, go with a host that will throw in the domain name for FREE. it's pretty standard these days.

also, for mp3 downloads, you want LOTS of bandwidth so you never have to worry about your site going down.

PowWeb and Dreamhost are good hosts - they give you a lot of bandwidth. (normally ~6GB per day.)

bandwidth is ludicrously cheap if you're a) not in australia, and b) buying any reasonable amount of it.
(one of the servers I run has something like 6gbit outbound in total. the limiting factor is that only one gigabit interface is hooked up to the outside world.)

I have had some luck with megauplaod but still find i get 2 hours into an upload and it fucks up on me.

Anyone found a one that is consistantly reliable? or faster? I'm getting about 11KB/s on megaupload?

mega upload is slow......

but, you can keep your files there forever. I tried about 4 different ones that kept fucking up after a few hours. Mega Upload was the only one that actually worked.

Servers and bandwidth in Australia do seem poor for the most part, and completely overpriced. People like to blame Telstra for having shitty web infrastructure but I think it runs deeper than that.

I have a huge dedicated server hosted out of downtown Toronto in a solid network centre. If anybody wants more flexibility over their space, no ads and reliable uptime I've been offering $10/GB/mo.

Consequently we host the mixes of the DJs we invite to spin for us.

filelodge has heaps of issues, goes down a lot, gets lots of errors when trying to download through a browser without download manager...heaps of retries.

Filelodge is a nice idea but poor resulting service.

300 gig storage. 3000 gig per month transfer bandwidth. 24/7 email/chat/phone support (which I've used, no problems). Unlimited multi-website hosting under one account. Five free domains. If you're new to google adwords or facebook advertising, you get a $50 credit for each service. One thousand email accounts. One gig storage per email account (up to your overall limit). Sixty mySQL databases (ie for forums like this). And a ton of other stuff.

No, I don't work for them, I've just used them for several years to host all of my own websites, and I've been pretty happy. I've got tons of stuff hosted on them. My biggest site is probably my DJ website, because for example it has this page which throws out a lot of bandwidth:

To give you a true idea about the versatility of Netfirms, I had one high-traffic day earlier this summer where my account had to serve NINE HUNDRED GIGABYTES in a 24-hour period. Netfirms handled that no problem, and didn't even email to ask me what the hell was going on.

Anyway, that's one option. Not quite free, but at that price, you get a hell of a package.

just use archive.org for mix hosting. Multiple formats/files allowed per item, 2GB file size limit, fastest upload/download rates and permanent retention. What more could you ask for?

you can put up albums, comps, singles, single tunes, videos, whatever you want.

Oh, you could ask that your data be preserved in a CATHEDRAL! So it's a good all round service. Free, always will be.. why use anything else? mixcloud SUCKS who wants to spend their whole life getting the tracklist synced to time perfectly for every mix, for mixcloud. lol.

on topic, mixcloud has no limits on file size now, which is awesome. I'm not sure if you can allow downloads for free though? So archive.org still best for downloads.. and non-mp3 files, FLAC, WAV, AIFF etc.

Soundcloud is good but you can only fit 2 hours onto a free account, so mixcloud or archive.org all the way.

Archive is doing a donation run at the moment so hopefully they're not in tough times..
