Sydney is a bit boring
I'm here in Darling Harbour, night 2 of 3, returning to Melb. late thursday night, and this city has little vibe.
I went to a nifty place on the recommendation of Ides and another friend of mine - Slip Inn - good for dinner and the atmosphere. I learned there that there is really not much on at all during the week. If I were in Melbourne I could think of things every night, even Tuesdays at sketchy, dirty dirty Revolver. But here I'd have to take a ferry in 10 degree, icey rainy weather to Bondi just for some who-knows dnb, knowing I can't ferry it back until after 5am the next morning.
I have a nice hotel room here and no hotties to bring back, kind of a let down. Yes woe is me.
This is to say, from a foreigner and proud recent Melbourne resident, Sydney might be considered one of the finest cities in the world, but on the street, from the perspective of real people, Melbourne is a chiller, cooler, more laid back place. Well done Melbourne, I love you, your women are hotter, nicer, and your people are nicer in general.
Long live Melbourne.

1) this thread is not a good idea.
2) the cities are different in their own right and differnt weather, social climate, outside influences, poplulation size, blaa blaa blaa cause different things to evolve. So the people in Sydney like what they have cause it suits them.
3) Melbourne is better, yes.
4) cities like Melbourne, for my taste, Barcaloco, Berlin etc are food for those that feed of the cook of creativity. You can't diss those that have not been breast feed on it, cause they grew to love something else.

definitely true on the nightlife thing. there are events on mid week, but not until Thursday night generally. the liquor licensing laws are just way different in Sydney, compared to Melbourne, sadly.
have a look at the 3D World event listings as well.
not sure about your public transport call though. trains run until 3AM, buses even later. ferries stop early, but you'd never take one from Darling Harbour to Bondi - unless you had an hour or more to kill.

Ah, the old Sydders V Melbs argument.
I've lived in both, as well as Bris Vegas and Perth
Melbourne OWNS.
I like the oldness of it, the grunge, the trams, the established trees, the coats and boots in winter and the feeling of being in prague on a winter's day in the city when it's all misty and the old guys are selling chestnuts on the corners. I love wandering down a random dirty alleyway to yet another hidden away wicked little bar.
Horses for courses (and Sasha ) but there's too many pewter heels and not enough kicks on Sydney chicks for my liking

Sydney is not a terrible place, I think just Melbourne in Australia is a nicer place. Sydney is beautiful thanks to its water location and slightly nicer climate, though you wouldn't know that by temperatures at night lately.
Public transit I was told it didn't quite run that late.
places I have lived:
- London*
- Beirut*
- Singapore
- Toronto, ON
- Burlington, ON
- Hamilton, ON
- Grimsby, ON
- Montreal, Quebec
- Belleville, ON
- Melbourne, Oz
Of these, Grimsby was the worst. Melbourne is top 3 for sure.
* - too young to remember living there that long

sad to say it kids, but so true.KAmis wrote:Why is it always folks from Melb who want to have this argument...
The need for people to proclaim that where they come from is 'the best' reminds me of being in prep and kids arguing whose dad could beat up who.
LOLZ at Ben, Nat and Fents. champagne comedy!

heh, i got heaps of sydney crew, whenever i go to sydney they spend the whole time moaning about how they wished they lived in melbs.Direktor wrote:Where's the Sydney backlash?
sydney v melbourne is not really a debate, more just melbourne people celebrating their wonderful city.

No it isn't!!!universal sea wrote:Sydney is a bit boring
An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
Word. Heard that new opposition leader say something like "I love this state, I love Victoria with a passion..." With the way he said it, I felt what he was talking about. I love my Melborne!sneaky hands wrote:heh, i got heaps of sydney crew, whenever i go to sydney they spend the whole time moaning about how they wished they lived in melbs.Direktor wrote:Where's the Sydney backlash?

adelaide is a nice place to grow old and have kids.Carlz wrote:What about Adelaide???
it is a sucking drain for anyone with a creative bone in their body or any aspirations to see the world.
i served my time there.
i like sydney, its buzzin and international and theres lots gonig on.
but im from san fancisco, and melbourne is the closest to that ive found here in OZ...
melbourne is my own little paris, i walk the streets and really do feel like the city is some kind of lover, i recently moved to perth and pined for melbourne so bad i moved back three months later (of course, a wicked crew here helps)
but ive lived in lots of places, san fran, nepal, etc etc
and melbourne is the best life, the best art, the best little microcosm of stuff where you can actually have a life as well as work to live...
My favourite Sydney event is finishing after 10 years! Frigid was the bomb. I used to go see it at the Hopetoun Hotel, then it got even better when it moved to Enmore. But now they're hanging up the hat. Oh well, I guess 10 years is a good innings.
During which time I was fortunate enough to see Luke Vibert, Burnt Friedman, DJ Olive, Pivot, Deepchild, Telemetry Orchestra and a ton of other great electronic artists. And I don't think I ever paid more than $10 for any of those shows.

My best Sydders memories:
Glebe Markets, Newtown cafes and vibe, The Bank, The Rose, dirty rock at the Annandale, the Enmore
Saw Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Tool in Sydders- :good memories:

Big ups to all the positive melbourne vibes. I'm on dial up at the airport in the Blue Room, another 90 mins to kill before the return flight.
I had a super afternoon in manly, where it seemed everybody I met was from other places - Paris, Brazil, venus.
sydney is one of the world's ten great cities and I always enjoy visiting, though this trip was a bit disappointing.
big ups bo kitty's comments, sums it up from an outsider's perspective.
and big ups the people who live in adelaide, you must have nerves of steel, or have a likeness to tawnee stone.
