What do you think of rotating banners much the same as MJ.com's system, advertising local parties and/or affiliated content?

banners suck. waste of time and I'm amazed that anyone still makes money from them.
I refer you to the second post made in the "Melbourne Beats" forum:
a good thing at the moment (and a useful and valid community feature), would be to have a promoters' forum - where a standard post format could be used and people can easily find out what is going on.
still waiting for this bit as well!

loading banners will directly affect this, which brings up this point:admin wrote:2. The site will be fast
We will refrain from adding features if it is deemed they will degrade the performance of the site. The site must be lightning fast. The user experience is the top priority. This means, no bloated flash ads, no unecessary DHTML menus, etc.
not sure if the site has reached a 'needs to break even point'.admin wrote:3. Advertising
For the foreseeable future, while I'm able to pay for the hosting out of my own pocket, the site will be ad free. If and when the time comes, advertising will be considered. It must not be distracting, annoying or otherwise deemed lame. It must not affect the performance of the site or in any way degrade the quality or accessibility of the content.

admin wrote:5. Standards compliant
The site will conform to valid XHTML standards in order to make the site as "browser-proof" as possible. This has the added spin-off of making the content accessible to users with disabilities. We do not discriminate against anyone.

No one said anything about money, this site has always been about community. If people want to promote parties, then why not have a banner for people to check out?system wrote:banners suck. waste of time and I'm amazed that anyone still makes money from them.

sure, sure. why not have a dedicated forum for that stuff first though?lynt wrote:No one said anything about money, this site has always been about community. hmmm i dont see how the server load and bandwidth is going to be jepordised by a banner picker... if we're that concerned we should take off the logo and emoticons.system wrote:but they aren't being generated during the forum page build, lynt.lynt wrote:I count 5 individual banners in this thread alone. maybe we should raise this issue again...system wrote:sure, sure. why not have a dedicated forum for that stuff first though?lynt wrote:No one said anything about money, this site has always been about community. Good to see some spirited debate on this one.
I floated a similar suggestion a while back. Basically offering free ads (of some kind) to mb.c members as a way of helping smaller crews access an advertising medium they wouldn't normally be able to afford. No animated ads. Just a nice colour JPEG/GIF with a sensible size restriction.
I still like this idea. I think it can be done in a way that is still in-line with the original mission statement.
Lately I have been getting annoyed with seeing images (especially ads) in people's signatures. This makes the idea of free banner ads more attractive to me if it means we can have a 'no images in signatures' policy.
Server load and bandwidth is not an issue at this point, we have plenty of resources moving forward. Load/bandwidth on the client-side however is still (and always will be) a major concern.
So yeah, if implementing banner ads means we can get rid of images in signatures then I say let's do it.
Another idea came to me in the shower the other day though....
When the calendar system is built (it's coming soon, I promise) we will easily be able to build a list of parties that are happening in the next week or so. I thought it might be cool to have 3 or 4 random google style text ads in boxes running down the right side of each page. So yeah, if people object to having graphic ads then this might be a good alternative?
P.S. To address the point someone raised about XHTML/CSS compliance. It is something I am still planning on implementing. I am waiting until the new version of phpBB before I evaluate the best way to move forward on this one.

fo' shizzle.
at first I thought tthe banners would be a good idea, as long as they aren't animated. then I noticed that every promoter on this board has a banner in their sig anyway.
what's the point in having one on the front page?
I think I am, Therefore I am. I think

to keep the forums clean instead of having 50 banners per page view.
either remove the ability to post ads/images in signatures and have a rotating banner system atop the pages, or let everyone advertise in their sigs. not both.
it seems like you should lean towards text-only sigs and one rotating banner per page if you wanna keep it efficient and clean, like the site was set up to be. don't want it looking like doa, now do we?

I reckon do it. throwing some support behind local crews is f.a. skin off anyone's nose on here really but extremely valuable (and cool) to plenty of punters and promoters who can't afford massive flyer drops and glossies. speed may be one committment on this site, but supporting a scene we're all a part of seems to me to be the main reason this site exists and attracts the users it does..
On a semi related issue, I've been thinking there's some freaking awesome flyer art going around lately and its kinda disappointing that bar a few bedroom walls it won't be seen again. What would be involved in attaching a flyer history kinda folder thingy on here so people could see some past flyers and folks could post new ones in there too to stop clogging up the forums? Although I guess everyone wants to comment on them and stuff so maybe its not so great.. Anyway, yeah just an idea.

Anyone got access to the old MJ.com image archive or did that dissappear along with everything else?system wrote:that was one of the best parts of Melbourne Jungle. damn good idea.10.15 wrote:I've been thinking there's some freaking awesome flyer art going around lately and its kinda disappointing that bar a few bedroom walls it won't be seen again. great idea
could help mb in terms of cross promotion and logo's on flyers and presence at events.
banners are still very successful system and are growing at 50-60% a year in terms of revenue in the local market.
people are putting banners in sigs so there's no reason why they can't go at the top of the page.
banners are usually 20-30k and if served through eyeblaster around 100k polite download ... they aren't going to fuck anyones bandwidth restrictions.
if i was still doing parties i'd definitely put money into mb if the opportunity was there ... i tried with mj but it disappeared right when the campaign was to start.

Just want to clarify.
Under the system I'm proposing, banner ads would be free.
Paid advertising is not something we're considering any time soon.
