Welcome to Melbourne Beats.
Here's a brief mission statement. It's a work in progress:
1. Promo threads allowed
We believe that "promo threads" are an integral part of a Melbourne based music forum and we encourage their existence. They are crucial in facilitating discussion and raising awareness about various parties and venues. We don't believe in misleading forum users with faux-discussions that are really just promo threads. Promo threads should be clearly identifiable as promo threads and should not exist to con the user into believing that they're something they're not.
2. The site will be fast
We will refrain from adding features if it is deemed they will degrade the performance of the site. The site must be lightning fast. The user experience is the top priority. This means, no bloated flash ads, no unecessary DHTML menus, etc.
3. Advertising
For the foreseeable future, while I'm able to pay for the hosting out of my own pocket, the site will be ad free. If and when the time comes, advertising will be considered. It must not be distracting, annoying or otherwise deemed lame. It must not affect the performance of the site or in any way degrade the quality or accessibility of the content.
4. The community comes first
The site is community driven. Features will be added to the site only if it is deemed they will benefit the community.
5. Standards compliant
The site will conform to valid XHTML standards in order to make the site as "browser-proof" as possible. This has the added spin-off of making the content accessible to users with disabilities. We do not discriminate against anyone.

Re: top work lucas
Hey... I just paid about $70 for the intial setup of the server and domain name, the ongoing cost will be around $20 per month.nictoupee wrote:dude how much does it cost to host a forum like this? sure we can do something to contribute...

I'll be covering the cost. No need for donations. But if you guys really want to help I guess you could come up with some creative ways to get people using this thing. =)
Also, any suggestions for extending the site beyond forums are most welcome.

Nice one.
Myself and Jay from MTC were going to do the same thing today (register a domain name and start a message board with no sensless rules). It looks like we wont bother now
With your permission, I'll link to this board with my signature on other messageboards that I frequent and from our website at www.panicstrickenbovine.com
I also have a mailing list with 3,500 Melbourne dance fans on it. I'll be sure to mention MebourneBeats.com in our next mailout.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one that thought of doing this. Welcome aboard. =)
In terms of linking to other sites/forums/whatever; please do. Knock yourself out. The more we can promote discussion and interest about your event the better, if that discussion takes place in another forum, then so be it.
This site is as much yours as it is mine, so anything (that's legal and won't get any of us in trouble) goes.

That'd be wicked. Tilt would be a great venue for such an occasion. Keep us posted, eh?Dean Millson wrote:There is probably every possibility that we could have a melbournebeats.com party at Tilt in the near future... i'll have a look at some dates and see what is possible. Flicking through these threads has made me realise just how bad ITM has become, and it's not just this last debacle, it's been creeping up slowly for a while. This fun again!!
A couple of suggestions; On a lot of the forums I go to O/S they have a list of links. I've found some great stuff this way. If ITM had this i didn't find it.
Mixes, lots of mixes!!
Great job so far!!

A links list is a good idea. Will put it on the todo list when we start to expand the site (hopefully very soon).
In the mean time DB has started a links thread which is a good start.
