Just to make it clear...
I wasn't dissing anyone by that statement ... you can't really dis people's beliefs, values or their perceptions of reality.
After all as long as anything promotes good mental health. It's alright by me.
Saying that, I don't believe drugs, religion and spirituality promotes a good lifestyle choice ... but hey that's just my opinion. What works for me may not work for you.

Warcraft was just entertainment for me until dickheads started talking about real life or virtual life shit in Barrens Chat...
There's only so many Chuck Norris jokes and racial slurs you can take before you break.
If people use stuff like second life i'm guessing their first life isn't up to scratch. I prefer working on the first life, before pissing it away.

that doco was off the hook
the gold coin farms in china were alarming to say the least. People play WoW as a job, they live at these places and get paid $4000 per month to play 12hours of WoW per day. They then on sell the gold these kids generate to rich khunts in the USA and Europe for $10 per 250 coins.... some of these chinese kids are generating like 30-40 million coins per day.....

i think its a great global virtual 3D communication platform. im not into WOW or other similar games, but have gone on second life and hung out on private islands and met cool people from around the globe. its just like myspace but more personal.
check out 'festival island', which is run by Dale from Oztrance. They have a huge stage there on which music is occasionally simulcast from clubs.

Yeah, I spent a bit of time on second life and made some good friends there. Two of my "neighbours" actually met in real life, and started living with each other. I was best man at their virtual wedding.
Strange, but interesting. I think that the way second life encourages creativity makes for a new form of self expression that is quite wonderful. Anyhow, its got to be better for you than watching television all night.
Yeah that doco last night was crazy alright. What an interesting world we live in right now.

and his missus was selling her sh*t cyber clothes (not even a material thing, like gettup for your character)
and they were both cashing their 2nd Life money into real money and living off it as a 2nd wage???
I was blown away by that ^^
of course in the same article they showed the same coupel laying on seperate beds in tehir home cuddling each other on a beach somehwere on in 2nd life??? SADNESS

i find it ironic that you choose to tell people to be creative with music software and then proceed to hang shit on people who make money from software.LuKo wrote:its really really farkin sad

You can't argue with that

I gather NASA has some sort of space where they hold meetings for their open-source projects and whatnot. We've also considered the possibility of setting up something in second life as a resources/interface for distance education students.
I'm not familiar with intricacies of it but I'm not sure how it's that much different (in pathetic sadness factor that people are going on about) from ICQ (remember that), IRC, Myspace or MB for that matter. Like anything, there is use and abuse. Too much of anything is bad for you including drugs, late nights or loud music.
Using dating websites is becoming pretty normal/mainstream these days and is no longer just the realm of desperate perverts. It's probably a far more honest way of meeting someone than trying to get them drunk at a club.
An electronic life is no substitute for the real world but you can't argue that the internet isn't an amazingly powerful tool that can be used to connect people and create genuine, lasting relationships of any sort you care to think of including marriage, friendship, collaboration and production duos.
Adapt or perish.
There's no justice, just us.

still the same realm - it's just expanded to include more than just the net geeks. everyone likes to practise their breeding skills.aspekt wrote:Using dating websites is becoming pretty normal/mainstream these days and is no longer just the realm of desperate perverts. I for one am not really into this second life bizzle but whats the difference between using this site and playing Grand Theft Auto or any other game for that matter.
Both are immersive interactive environments in which the user escapes from thier day to day reality when they engage in these environments.
Why are video games pretty widely accepted when these forms of electronic interaction are seen as sad?

as much as i like video games, i try to stay away from them, much prefer to do something constructive.
Having said that though, since i am hermitizing to save to go OS, i started playing FIFA 06 and cant stop, started playing on the weekend and am halfway through my second season as a manager

If Dr Phil is correct we should be worrying about people like Mecka and Stray....
oh...
wait...
I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be the center of attention. I wanted the glory, I wanted the fame. I wanted the pretty girls to come up and say, "Hi, I see that you're good at Centipede."
I don't agree.Hatsudai wrote:Yes!mecka wrote:where do you lot get off thinking you are any better than people who choose to do this sort of shit online?

recent online advances notwithstanding, computer games are by and large played by one person against the computer, and if there are multple players then they all tend to be in the same room together (please note I said recent online advances notwithstanding so don't come back at me on the fact that they need not be in the same room, thats a recent phenonon IMO and one the larger public wouldn't be gaming at this level yet - I may be wrong)
I think the reason people decry these games is the relationship portion (which I don't believe is evident in most traditional video games). People having virtual marriages, living in virtual houses, and striking up deep friendships with people they haven't met for most people is an idea that is forgein, frightening, and they would say "sad". Most people, given the choice, would prefer to have a relationship in real life, rather than in a virtual world. I'm not subscribing to these points of view, merley stating that some people may have them.
I think most people are opposed to the extreme end of this scale, where people are spending more time on these "virtual" relationships, rather than ones built in the real world. IMO its all real world, its just that the virtual world is another tool by which you can communicate. I think you will find that people who get addicted to these games and spend all their spare time on them probably have troubles with communication in real life. It might be confidence, actual speech problems, or maybe they are just an asshole and no one likes them.
The merits of whether its "sad" or not doesn't bother me. Its not part of my world so I don't care, live and let live. But, I don't think you can say that these games are the same as video games the way we have thought of them in the past.

while I admire the verbosity of the retort, I fail to see the difference between a human or a computer controlled character in a modern video game. to me, this is just all falls under the generic anorak wearing label - just updated for the zeitgeist. the information exchange in games/VRs/etc is just more immediate, so the length of immersion/engagement is artificially prolonged.mrj wrote:I don't agree.Hatsudai wrote:Yes!mecka wrote:where do you lot get off thinking you are any better than people who choose to do this sort of shit online?
