hmmmm the likelihood of a sugar Daddy at the stencil fest. I think likely!

stop bagging CIA and be more constructive. Now then sugar Mummas ain't my style, and neither is working TOO hard for the money, so what ideas have you got?

so, last year the pieces were considerably more expensive than the year before. I was speaking to someone on Friday night who had just been to this years opening and apparently they are now ridiculously over-priced.ghetto kitty wrote:argh, missed the opening, which is always good to catch all those shy hooded street artists in the one place at the one time...

heheheh
all ill say about that is that they are charging for submissions this year, with no guarantee of being included in the show, basically charging to open emails of pics and say yes, your in or no, your not.
coupled with the fact that many of the best stencil artists in melbourne werent represented last year, and prolly wont be this year, its laughable.
and with my big mouth and all my history with the organisers and the scene, thats all im gonna say bout that.
the shows at per square metre have been much, much better than any stencil fest lately, everytime i walk past there (johnston st collingwood) there is dope art going on!

totally. last year's was awesome. this year's was nothing special.mecka wrote:am i the only person who's over stencil art? not meaning to detract from the exhibition (which was quite impressive last year) - i'm just finding stencils less and less interesting as time goes on. There's no justice, just us.
i kind of agree with you, played out and oversaturated with boring samey shit. some great stuff around if you look allthough generally i find it shit. post ups and massive pieces are another thing though, bug = impressivemecka wrote:am i the only person who's over stencil art? not meaning to detract from the exhibition (which was quite impressive last year) - i'm just finding stencils less and less interesting as time goes on. havign a stencil convention seems a bit narrow to me, bit like having a red biro on sticky notes show, which seems more interesting to me anyhow. That said any art is good as long as its not shit

I'm not tired of street art either, especially stencil art
Of course there'll always be the sub-standard shit floating around, but the same can be said for any art form, there's the good & the bad
as the 'scene' gets bigger there's inevitably more shit to wade through

hi gnatty!!
you know the funniest thing is, it isnt even a stencil show anymore, there is drawings charos, so many kinds of art, and the first show in 04 the prices ranged from $20 to $500 and everything sold.
reaching a wider audience sure, but if the fucknig artists cant afford to submit works, or buy any of the art they love, then whats the feckin point??
if you guys want to know who in OZ is still pushing the envelope (i mean we all love bansky, but hes now 'fine art" really!) check out
http://www.dielaughingcollective.com
these are friends of mine from tassie who do lots in melbs and a couple havbe just moved here, jamin, pacey, empire and homewrecker...they do great political stuff like howard with guns and "where the wild thnigs are" but with polticians heads...amazing big scale shit!!! props to those boys, NO EGO too!
like any art form, to be fresh it has to bust its own boudaries, i mean the basis of stencil art comes from a few revolutions (hello che) and bill postering, a way to reproduce the same image quickly and cheaply lots of times.
sticking it on canvas and charging drug money for it isnt really the point.
someone like logan hicks, who cuts for 24 hours straight on one stencil, i mean he executes qutie amazing works, and they really utitlise the art form in a different way, but so many of the rest are just riding a wave that is well and truly over.
it will be interesting to see how many pieces sell for those prices.
my house is a stencil gallery, most given to me by the artist, theres prism and meek and meggs and phibs and form and ghosty and lots of the big names, but even im a bit over looking at it, and am more in love with the framed prints i got from two and bonsai lately, slicker, more timeless etc etc
check out die laughing tho, especially the aussie/lebanese picture...i love those guys.
i know lots of artists...tell me what kind of style/imagery and ill see what i can find for you, can definately do though!SoulWhiteMan wrote:1200

I'm not over Stencil Art either.
What I would say is that I agree somewhat with Mecka and Nic's sentiments, in that I believe prices have hit an unsustainable level. In fact I'm pretty sure we had this debate last year if memory serves.
Although I would argue that there is plenty of art that is of the same or less artistic merit (purely opinon obviously) that sells for much more.
As always, its market forces that determine price. I remember last year at the opening all the pieces dissapeared pronto as people clambered over each other to try and get one. Thats guaranteed to ensure that prices will go up the next year. I'm sure if they have difficulty selling stuff this year that next year will see a return to more acceptable levels.

I don't mind the artists making a killing on the new found trendiness of the form, either; let them milk the masses while they can. And sure we'd all like a wonderful piece for our homes but stencil art is street art, and is best seen in its natural environment, IMO.
Of course, having had Tom Civil do a mural for the shop, recently may make me a bit hypocritical
