Commix - Call To Mind LP [Metalheadz]
Commix - Call To Mind LP [Metalheadz]
There are some Drum and Bass albums that ignore the boundaries of the scene: Goldie’s ‘Timeless’, as an universal hymn to inner city life, Reprazent ‘New Forms’, giving a brilliant twist to jazz and soul, Pendulum’s ‘Hold Your Colour’, packed with heavy rock hooks. Commix ‘Call To Mind’ is one of them, offering a subtle fusion of the purest techno, the deepest Philly Soul and drum and bass rhythms. When asked what inspired them to produce music, Commix AKA George Levings and Guy Brewer, are quick to talk about their love of Billy Paul, Dexter Wansel, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Plastikman, Digitalism, Matthew Jonson, yet their debut album is about to be released on Goldie’s legendary label Metalheadz. Over 11 tracks, ‘Call To Mind’ shows off the depth of their musical knowledge and their production talent. While the rhythms are firmly rooted in Drum and Bass, Commix display a crispiness of production and high-impact simplicity with deep, lush atmospheres and strong organic touches. From the bleepy sounds of ‘Be True’ and ‘Belleview’ to the awesome rhythms of ‘Burn Out’, the minimal groove of ‘Spectical’ to the deep hip hop vibes of ‘Change’ featuring the Nextmen, the 808 State-esque strings of ‘Emily’s Smile’ to the sexy funk of the Spacek vocal ‘How You Gonna Feel’ and culminating with the deep atmospheres of ‘Strictly’, ‘Call To Mind’ is vibrant, diverse and compelling.
