April 5th - Miss Libertine
“Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ. Everything else stems from that core, that love. With that love, sampling can become a tribute; An expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. Using the same understanding openly and respectfully can turn DJing into a spiritual participation. It can turn a few hours of selection into essential history; Necessary listening through movement.â€
– Theo Parrish
This personal philosophy gives shape and direction to the distinctive sounds that are created by Theo Parrish.
Theo Parrish was born in Washington, DC in 1972 and raised in Chicago, IL where his passion for music developed. Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone, Bob Marley as well as his uncle, jazz musician Dexter Sims, all had strong influences on Theo’s early musical life. Chicago’s radio influences and house artists such as Ron Hardy, Larry Heard, Lil’ Louis, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Gene Hunt, Mike Dunn, Frankie Knuckles, Walter “Get Down†Brown and Andrew Hatchett helped to spawn Mr. Parrish’s early career. He began spinning and producing tracks in 1986 at the age of thirteen.
After graduating from the Academy for the Artist, he received a scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute where his interest in music was taken to a new level through his study of sculpture. In 1994, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from KCAI with a concentration of Sound Sculpture, a form of orchestration using live generating devices. While in KC, Theo continued to impact and be impacted by dance music helping bring a dormant underground scene to life.
In 1994, Theo moved to Detroit where he became heavily involved in the underground music scene. Producing music and delivering his unique and dynamic sets in venues throughout Detroit and surrounding areas as well as abroad. He has gained attention and respect of DJs, producers, listeners and dancers worldwide.â€
Alongside Rick Wilhite and, of course, the ever mysterious Moodymann, Theo Parrish represents a new style of Detroit house. Slower and more experimental than its Chicago counterpart, it’s a sound that looks mainly to African-Americas rich musical heritage for inspiration. Theo Parrish juxtaposes elements of soul, jazz, disco, funk and techno with simple but often hypnotically funky 4/4 house rhythms. Discover his unique sound when he tours Australia.
Theo Parrish is the purveyor of a lo-fi, slowed-down, twisted house – somehow bridging the gap between german crackling techno (Kompakt, Klang, Force Inc) and the Detroit soul of his alter-ego, Moodymann.
There will also be a RBMA info session in the afternoon with the man himself for all those interested in applying for the academy, more info soon.

If your passion is writing, playing, performing or producing music then you are invited to a FREE INFO SESSION where you can have all your questions answered about what the Academy is, how you can apply and what you can expect once you get there. And to give you a taste of what you can experience at the Academy, we invite you to sit in on an exclusive lecture with one of house music’s heavyweights, Theo Parrish.
The music of Theo Parrish is uncompromisingly deep. He an artist that not only demands the respect of his house music contemporaries, but whose fan-base crosses many purist genres. At times dark, sometimes disturbing but always soulful, Parrish’s recordings on his own Sound Signature label, Ugly Edits and Peacefrog stand the test of timely fads and fashion.
