yeah its a little convenient, i wonder if they put the trial on during the quietest part of the year so it can become enforced with less opposition.
Less violence but is that just because there will be less people going out in the next 3 months?

One minute it's cab drivers jumping up and down with no tops on ala Summerdaze on the steps of Flinders and now you can't go out...yes OUT because you bloody well have to....for a friggin smoke after 2am!!!!
Did I fall asleep and wake up in Bizarro world?

I've quit smoking but still - if this becomes permanent and your venue doesn't have a beer garden you're screwed.

Or tasers for us. I know Gnat wants one with mp3 function.

I'd love to taser some of the hair-gelled footyteams who are taking out their pent-up homosexuality on each other.

Or we could lock them in an arena and give them all tasers and screen the footage in the big brother time slot with benny-hill theme music playing in the background.

Ok I go now.
Thanks CIA, I just pissed marself  needed a good belly laugh.

Why don't they just ban alcohol? Go on, ban it. That's the root of the problem innit? Or make grog more expensive...$10 for a pot of VB anyone?

The whole thing's just fucking stoopid. Lizkins is right...a relatively small group of fucktards ruining it for all the normal peoples. A lockout's only gonna make it worse...jeez I feel like I'm taking crazy pills :?

My brother is in Townsville and says that the 2am lock out just makes people angrier and more violent because they can't get back into the club, especially if you've already paid to be there.

I'm not a smoker, but what gets me, is one new law says you have to go out on the street, and now another one says you have to either stay inside or go home. Where's the freedom?

If the government wants this to work then I think they need to run public transport til at least 3 or 4am so the people left out on the street can get home. There obviously won't be enough taxis to handle the situation, and if they want to get the drunks off the street, make it easy for them to get home. Run the trams or trains or both. Don't just leave people out on the street with no where to go and no way to get home.

Edit: one article I read said it is to curb young people binge drinking (as in, 18/19 year olds)... wouldn't lifting the legal drinking age to 21 be more effective than locking people out of clubs? I know it won't completely solve the problem, but it'll make more of a difference than leaving people out in the street.

i reckon raising the drinking age to 21 is a good idea too. although getting clubs etc to enforce that law would be hard. i swear the whole bar at POW last week were 18 year olds at the most. would they not be able to serve grog anymore too?

i dunno. wouldnt stop everyone but would stop quite a bit i would think. unless they all get pepped up on red bull and start fights anyway.

I'm a huge supporter of 21+ drinking laws. You gain a little perspective by the time you hit 21 IMO. Then again, I come from a country where that was the law...didn't stop me from obtaining a fake ID though. Did stop me from acting like a tool (in fear of losing my fake ID) AND it stopped me from drinking like an idiot cuz I didn't want to seem like the dickhead in the bar/club.

I saw way less fights in the states, inside and outside the clubs/bars. Not saying they didn't happen, but not near the main drinking precincts. Then again we also have 2am licenses in CA, so everyone's either booted out of the bars/clubs at 2am OR the alcohol is stopped being served then with a lock-in to full effect. Made clubbing interesting in SF, cuz San Jose didn't have any lock-in clubs. Lock-in clubs made lots of money selling "energy drinks" and "water", let me tell you...I wonder what else was sold by the bartenders? Hmmm??? But this wasn't why there weren't many fights...

To put it in perspective for folks, I was quite used to coming out of clubs at 2am when they closed in San Jose to see 15 cop cars and 50 police officers on the street (our main drinking precinct was along a main street). They were simply there, in full riot gear, to keep the peace and "escort" those who were too messed up into awaiting paddy wagons. They'd take note of bars who were sending out the really messed up punters and these bars would get on the spot fines for serving drinks to people so messed up. My girlfriend at the time worked as a bartender and her bar had it happen once or twice. It was the cops way of enforcing responsible drink serving.

What this ensured was people who really wanted to party made the 45 minute trek to San Francisco, by train if you were smart, to party at the late night "lock in" clubs. Obviously with the help of narcotics, you'd stay til daylight and walk the wharf precint til you were ready to make the train journey back to San Jose. This made San Jose a really dull clubbing/party city, but that's what the people in San Jose wanted, for better or worse.

I know this from people I know...I stayed at home always eating cookies and drinking milk whilst reading great literary classics.

Does anyone have any stats regarding the percentage of pub fights caused by drinkers under 21? I have to say I'm a little dubious that age has that much to do with it.

We are way cooler than everyone Steve, and don't you forget it!

Now, lock up the dickheads so we can have some free reign. I'm too scared to leave my house! Might get in a fight.

In other news: I was in an attempted car-jacking one night on the way to Revolver. Lights at King St, 3am, dudes tried to open my car doors. Quickly locked my drivers side and almost ran a dude over. Scary shit.

I blame the government and R&B.

Im sure there are heaps, too many to list... the post was a joke btw

the justification for these laws isn't anything to do with 'binge' drinking at all.. its to do with making more money, squeezing what they can out of people without them realising as its in the name of 'binge drinking'
Binge drinknig has been around for years.. Only now are they pushing it as 'Out of control' and in need of attention

They make the problem and then offer the solution.

Holy shit, even that article gets it wrong, as have plenty of Facebook protest groups. It's not a fucking curfew, it's a lockout. There's a big difference. I'm all for the cause, as I think lockouts suck and will just cause more violence on the streets, but it's embarrassing how knee-jerk some peoples' reactions have been, without actually getting the facts right.

According to that article 2am lockout 3 month trial begins on June 1st.

Niiice!
2 problems.... charged by? lack of police on streets.

court system...... 'oh yes johnny, that boy will never walk after you and your friends beat him senseless, but your lawyer states that you were intoxicated and unable to control your anger and actions.... 2 years..... suspended sentence'

Needs tougher punishments for crimes against person/people.... the deals that they hand out these days don't deter anyone!!! if someone KNOWS that they get a 5 YR MIN. etc.... maybe they would think about what they are about to do, not laugh at the jacks and laugh when they get stuff all at courts.

Drinking age should be 21... who gets their license for car and drinking privileges at the same time... really, it always spelled disaster.

Is that from 'They Live' or ???

I don't think a lockout is a good idea. I think less wankers on the streets is. which seems to have a direct inverse relationship with this regulation.

I actually think this could be quite a good thing for Melbourne clubs.

Instead of focussing on negatives, think about the positives that can come from this....

People going out KNOW they have to be in a club by 2am, which means they will most likely get their shit together and get there by 1am at the latest, if not earlier. This will mean a promoter will have a MUCH better idea of the success of a night earlier on, and do something about it.. (i.e. if it is NOT looking full enough at 1, go out with fliers and hand them out to every dude on the street...)

Also - this will get rid of the 'accidental ravers' who don't really know why they are in a club at 4am and don't understand why you won't play whatever song they are after...

A couple of peeps have mentioned the 11am situation in UK. This WORKS. At 11 everyone has to decide whether to go home or go to a club. The decision gives the whole thing more of an intrinsic value.

A 2am lockout will distinguish the line between 'bar' and 'club' more too. Which means you can probably charge more for the 'club' experience and again, give it more value.

I do agree with some of the negative comments posted on here, but I don't think this is as big an issue as everyone is making it out to be, and I do think that there are a whole bunch of positives that can happen.
