TiVo® will transform how you enjoy free to air TV. Because with TiVo®, you select the schedule so you can watch what you want, when you want, where you want.

I just don't care that much about missing shows on TV. I guess it'd be useful in some instances but I probably wouldn't fork out for one.

I certainly won't be jumping on the band wagon in any great hurry. I can see the benefit of having it, but at the moment if there is a show on free-to-air television that I do actually miss, it's just as easy for me to acquire it from other online sources. So, I can't really justify the current price-tag to myself.

I'm sure for the general baby bonus masses they'll have to have one to go with their plasma TV so they can watch both TT and ACA, otherwise how else will they know what's going on in the world?

been using Foxtel ID for maybe 8 months i think. would never go back to regular system. you choose what you want to watch and when. rewind live tv. very handy. tivo is a bit expensive for free-to-air IMO. but it won't be long before everyone uses these sorts of HD recorders / tv guides.

we had foxtel IQ about a year ago.... it's a really good system... just not for us :?

we have roughly 1TB of movies/TV shows already. And it's easy as to get more on torrents.

Funny how anti music piracy I am, but totally pro TV and DVD downloads lol

hypocrite imo

This is definitely 5 years too late. Foxtel IQ has already jumped in and stolen the thunder, and the rest of us get along with torrents just fine. My current setup is awesome - automatically does all the searching + downloading for me, all I need to do is make sure there's enough space free. I haven't had to go torrent hunting since I set it up:

Crappy old laptop running 24/7 - networked, 500GB external drive, TED to search for new episodes of all my favourite TV shows, uTorrent to automatically download them during Optus off-peak time.
2 x modded Xboxes w/Xbox Media Center (one in the bedroom, one in the lounge) which can stream the movies off the laptop's external drive - $180 each, which includes the Xbox and the wireless adapter for them.

Bloody bargain if you ask me!

Man if you want pimp, build a meida centre pc and then you can plug anything into it. Any Satellite system, ATSC or DVB-T digital streams, Foxtel or any other pay tv service, Interwebs, streaming media from yo' network etc.... You are not limited by any codec. If you are missing one just install it.

It's the only versatile system out there.

Pain in the ass to set-up, but sooo soo worth it in the long run. Will cost you 1k with a pimp PC and more importantly a case that looks more like a DVD player than a computer.

i have a PVR ( personal video recorder) which is pretty good, has a 160gb harddrive and you can pause/record live tv also you set in what show you want to watch and it will record it if your not there ect....

HTPC/ media center pc is the way to go tho soooo much better, will be building one shortly

man, that sounds pretty cool

do you need to run windows, or windows media centre on the laptop/server? I'm running freeBSD on my server with around 700GB of movies/TV, would an xbox system work with that? do you run TED and uTorrent on the lappy? or could you run it on another machine?

The laptop doesn't need anything special on it, as long as it'll run TED + uTorrent (ie. a standard Windows XP install) it'll be fine. Xbox Media Center lets your Xbox play movies directly from the network just like you can with a PC - all it does is read the file off the network, the Xbox takes care of the rest on its side... no bullshit "Media Center" OS with DRM garbage required! The only downside is that new codecs won't be supported, but to date I haven't downloaded a media file it can't play. DivX, Xvid, MPEG, Quicktime, hell, it'll even play ISO or BIN/CUE files of video CDs, or files within ZIP/RAR files. I'm sure someone will release a patch for XBMC if a new mainstream codec comes out anyway.

A media center PC would definitely be a nicer + more flexible solution, but you can't argue with $180. The Xbox remote works with XBMC too, so really the only thing that sucks is having to physically turn on the Xbox when you turn everything on.

A Hacked Xbox was what I had before I stepped up to a HTPC. They are fkn great value, a little noisy though. Only real downside is that they can't handle HD media.

Just sold my HTPC, was too loud, big, and useless for me since I only watch movies / TV episodes, no need to record anything. Got good money too, more than what I spent. Hah!

I now stream from my Macbook using a wireless external HDD, wirelessly to my XBox via Connect 360. Mad.

Haha they can be a bit overkill... but they are so nerd it's cool (isn't it?). My next project is a SAN for my home network. Will be pimp. Then I can take the HDDs out of my HTPC and it will be 100% passive/silent (most of the time).

Hang on Lynt, your 360 is quieter than your HTPC was? Something is wrong there man :P

Can you not hear the fans due to too much abuse from PA systems?

Wireless is gaycakes... far too slow. However it's good in rentals where they won't let you get in the wall cavity.

Hehe, my HTPC was loud. Made no attempt to have silent fans or anything once I figured I could achieve my goal sans HTPC. XBox is pretty quiet in comparison, quiet enough to run it when I watch TV at least. :)

wireless is fine for most things... I guess transfering large files would be a fair bit slower but meh... who cares? it's really internet, video and music streaming that's going to matter (to me at least).

so, can you stream music/video with xbox360 (un-modded) from a non-windows machine? I've been using my macbook with a DVI->RCA/Svid dongle to my TV, works great over wireless, but I'd rather use the xbox360 as it's permanently attached to the TV etc anyway.
