sorry that i missed this question. :?

gnat, my folks have had a holiday house there for years. walkerville's an awesome spot, surrounded by national parks. you can see the prom clearly over waratah bay too.

if you've already gone, hope you had a good time - if not, enjoy! fish creek pub on the way in is mandatory for a traditional victorian country pub fix.

Casablanca -> Fes -> Erfoud -> Erg Chebbi -> Ouazazate -> Marrakech -> Essaouira -> Marrakech

Fucking amazing. Will have to sit down and tell you about it. Way to much to write here. Have many mnay photos to inspire you too. Do eeeeeeeeeeet!

so.....

what does everyone do for money OS?????? :?:

is it best to exchange all your money for cash? how do travelers cheques work? anyone use them?

ANZ have a travel-visa debit card... But you can only load it up with USD (at a 1.1% fee) then you still pay a conversion fee at ATMs for other currency (none for EFTPOS), apparently this is cheaper than the fee for a normal debit card though...... not sure which is the best option??? this debit card seems confusing to me :-/

depends on where you are going. (as in, are there ATMS or not many? etc)
your goin to japan right, so should be fine everywhere i think?

but i take a mix of USD in cash, credit card/debit card and travellers cheques.

travellers cheques are like cash with insurance kinda.
you sign them when you buy em, and they cannot be cashed unless you sign them again on the spot.
you record the # of them, and if they are stolen you can put a stop on them.

credit card/debit card really handy as some places wont take cash.
def need cold hard cash too at all times, just leave it locked in hotel room (with passport, in safe if poss.) and take what you need each day.
i am onto my stuff when travelling, have been pickpocketed and stranded in nepal as a result, but unless your REALLY anal (like me!) dont carry all your options in the one place...

Japan is sweet for withdrawing cash.

Don't use conversion stalls, they'll rip you hard. Just withdraw what cash you need. Cop the international transfer fee and drink fucking sake.

the man knows.

in japan just withdraw heaps at ATM. always best rate. I got WAY better rate at ATM than at money converter places, more than enough to cover the conversion fee.

Cirrus Maestro cards (eftpos) are best value for money when travelling.

Image

$4 (or so) fee. NO currency conversion fees (3% most credit cards)

If Cirrus Maestro cards are not accepted, VisaPLUS is your next best bet.

dont know about travellers cheques. never used them.

Not sure about that Deviant. I am always sceptical about special cards, eg travel visa, cause the tend to have some special charge.

I am with Nat, i tend to put over 50% of my cash on credit card and use that to pay for all accomm and larger expenses. Depending on how safe where i am is, then take out cash in local currency as less often as possible. Athough, if I am somewhere sketchy i would prefer to pay the extra $4 fee each time i take out money and have less on me than risk loosing hundreds.

Sounds like a rip :?. I always use the Visa debit card attached to my account overseas - get hit with the cash advance fee whenever you withdraw cash ($3.50), but that's it. No charge for when you use it as a credit card. Has never gone wrong for me.

If you're really paranoid, you could get one of the independent prepaid card thingos (I think one of 'ems called Cash Passport), put fuck-all on it and if the card attached to your account doesn't work directly, load up the prepaid online. Seems like overkill though :dontknow:
