Re: The Travel Thread
It's is absolutely freezing in Beijing! Got here this morning after a 13 hour packed SEATED train trip from Shanghai, what did I expect for under $50..? Off to The Great Wall tomorrow, trekking the 4.5km from Jinshanling to Simatai which I'm heaps excited about; heard it's the best part.
Re: The Travel Thread
too many places in 3 months Al, we will have to assess that and decide on priorities, I hate spending short amounts of time in lots of places, prefer to go to a few places and stay longer.
Re: The Travel Thread
have fun! My sisters weren't as into China as I am, but they both say that walking the Great Wall is one of the best experiences of their whole life. Re: The Travel Thread
7 months till I leave for South & Central America... Can't fucking wait! Trying to get to Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru & Chile (though I think we'll only be in Mexico and Chile for a couple of days each off the top of my head).
So if anyone else has been, how about some reccommendations? We're doing all the touristy stuff (Inca Trail, Salaar de Uyuni, etc.) so I'm especially keen to know about some more unique stuff.
Any reccommendations of where to see/hear hip-hop, dubstep, d'n'b and/or breaks? Or good spots for street art and the like?
Cheers
Neil

heaps of walks, the beaches are pretty good around the prom and waratah bay. it's a ~30-40 minute drive to the prom, depending on which part of walkerville you stay in.gnat wrote:both look nice. like what will we do- can go for big walks and swimming and stuffs? far from walkerville to get to?

don't go to adelaide, but if you must, hit up morialta conservation park (bus 104 from the 'city'). rad hiking up around a series of waterfalls. tracks not hugely challenging either. ftw imo.

Glad to know you're having fun!
I'm currently at Narita Airport. Been here since 8am. Haven't slept in over 30 hours, and I have a 3 & 1/2 hour delay before my flight to Helsinki. Beer settles the shakes. I'm actually suprised I can type let alone visit Melbournebeats.

I am a fan of Jon faine who used to do breakfast on 774. He hasn't been on the radio for ages and I didnt understand what happened to him until someone told me he had gone to Europe with this son. Well not quite.... they are driving from Melbourne to London!
I heard him on the radio last night describing his travels through all the "stan" countries. Sounded very cool.
here is the website for a look at their adventure. Looks huge!!

Hey all. Where is good to look for accom in Japan? Going to Tokyo and Kyoto and trying to plan accom but not having much luck with finding places on the net. Anyone got any places they can recommend for us? Looking to spend up to around $200/night for 2ppl. Cheers.
Re: The Travel Thread
I've been going the cheap option (around $140 per night)... hostels, sounds exxy for a hostel, but that's the aussie dollar's fault Been really hapy with the ones we've stayed at so far, VERY clean and neat.......
have used these two chains only so far
http://www.khaosan-tokyo.com/en/ninja/index.html
and
http://kshouse.jp/fuji-e/index.html
going here tomorrow
http://kshouse.jp/hiroshima-e/index.html
Dunno if this is what you are after, but I hope it helps someone at least.
.........
So, we've been riding bikes all around the base of Mount Fuji for the last two days... this place is amazing, the mountain must have the most foreboding presence of any other mountain (mind you the Himalayas would be up there)... small downs to the weather, been overcast the whole time and the view of the mountain has been pretty crap, hoping for a clear sky tomorrow morning before we leave.

I stay here ^
It's not easy finding accommodation in Japan. Websites are badly translated, it's expensive (especially now), and the good places are booked out up to 3-4 months prior.
I like Tokyu Stay because these are essentially business hotels which mean they very come up in tourist searches and therefor are better value because they are pitched at the locals. The rooms are more like an apartment than a hotel room and the service is low fuss. You usually get breakfast included also.
Good luck and enjoy your stay.

Re: The Travel Thread
We stayed at Taito Ryokan for the first part of our Tokyo stay (until we found a generous benefactor with a spare room in a large apartment right near the Yoyogi JR station - BEST).
I think it was 300 yen a night each, but it was really decent. I mean it is a hostel, so it's shared bathroom, but if you get an upstairs room its cool (not sure if a single would get one - ask the guy is really nice). I really enjoyed it.
You do sleep on a mat on the floor though - maybe not one for the soft bed crew.
It's in Asakusa, which was easily one of my favorite suburbs. Lots of temples, wicked little alleys and really cool bars at night. It's also close to transport, although it is at the end of the Ginza line. But everything is easy to get to in Tokyo anyway.

Re: The Travel Thread
In case anybody cares (maybe not!) my travel picks of the last four months are as follows:
- Scuba on Koh Tao in Thailand
Circled by sharks - also cheap as chips bro. - Easy Riders Central Highlands Motorbike tour in Vietnam
Central Vietnam is the most naturally diverse and lush place we've been to easy. Really mental. Once you get off the coast everyone is really really nice too. - Hanoi in Vietnam
You can't argue with fish Cha Ca and 25c beers. - Pretty much everything about Tokyo. Best city we have been to so far. Can't see anything beating it.
Especially bottle keep bars in golden gai (Japanese Fox bar) and whatever the golden gai lookalike behind Shibuya is. Oh and also the food. Oh god! THE FOOD! And the fact every single person in that city is just so nice. So nice. And the transport! And the parks! I could go on and on. - San Francisco (where we were for election and halloween which add bonus marks)
Just a really nice city. LA, Miami and Vegas don't have anything. - BIR SUR IN A CONVERTIBLE!
Like 1 million times better than the Great Ocean Road. - The GRAND FUCKING CANYON.
Especially sunrise!
