Studio Monitors - Tips

Post by fikuss »

who uses what... ?

where from... ? (im not interested in buying ebay monitors)

don't want top of the line just a really nice set of monitors. value for money. good sound etc.

I use Dynaudio BM6A's.

probly too expensive for what you need, but i love them to bits :smt049

dont get Truth's. the M1's are decent for the price i guess.

but you really get what you pay for, with a few exceptions 8)

i've only played with a few different types. currently a pair of genelec 1030a's are my choice...

all i can say is.. its worth saving for a really good pair rather than just getting them in a hurry. i really feel that you'll end up wishing you waited if you rush into the purchase

the only ba dthing about m1 is the cone size and they way they make fake bass to compensate
you need to keep it in mind when ur mixing down is all

What do you mean by fake bass? It boosts the low end unnaturally?

I'd go Samson Rubicon 6A's ahead of M1's... They RRP for $899, and are available through Hydes, Manny's, Allan's etc. They feature ribbon HF drivers, for the cleanest high end, and they're bi-amp powered...

Some of it is personal preference bout what u want to hear. I use Tannoy Active Reveals - they're a decent monitor and have a softer sound than most - which for me means you can work with em for longer. I've heard the Tapco S5 and I liked it, though I'd go the S8 over the S5 - they're both Mackie built monitors, very very good value.

another factor in choosing your monitors is room size, bigger the room, bigger the monitor choice. I've heard the big boys Mackie 824s in a tiny room, and they really didn't sound so good, they need a bit of space from walls and a bit of throw.

The Fostex range, PM1 and PM05 are i think the best value budget monitors out there - much better than M1's. Don't be fooled, they may not have the marketing push behind them a la M-Audio and Tapco, but they are a gem.

ok cheers for all the input folks....

so what i'm looking at is somewhere in the $1000-$1500 range (2k tops) i guess.

room is small. not tiny but about the size of your average bedroom.

want something that i can listen to for hours on end. for makin tunes. listening to tunes. mixing tunes etc.

Give those Samson's a listen Timmy... you'll be surprised, admittedly they're not know for high-end audio - but these have been getting really good raps around the country... Come in two size, the smaller ones (5a's) and the big brothers (6a's) - wikkid value for money... I can give u a demo at my work if it'll help u out...

yeah thats cool mate. i've got a big ol pair of old school speakers from my auntie to crank a mix through... just want a nice little set of studio monitors coz i'm in an apartment block now and its easy to piss off neighbours.

think i'm going to go with Tannoy Active Reveals - coz there's a second hand pair going cheap

I love my Behringer Truths

I got the B2031s and they're bang on for writing in a small bedroom set-up.

I know a few peeps who have just switched to them from Yamaha NTS and have never looked back.

For a bigger room the Mackies are great, and for A/Bing the Yamahas provide a great contrast.

South Melbourne, forget the name now, they set you up a trade acct which prob helps with the price. I think the retail is $2700, but I scored them for $1800. Cables from Mannys clearance sale $10 each.

My first real experience with mixing was on those Genelec 1030's, they had a set on display when I picked up the new ones.

How shit did previous mixdowns sound with decent monitors? Bass was real woolly and some mid range tones cut through too loud.

true.. but they don't make it any easier to mixdown i don't think. you definitely get a clearer idea of how it sounds but making things sound good on all systems is still tuff.. comes down to understanding your monitors...

what about the M-Audio BX5-As or BX8-as?

I'm after a smaller monitor due to room size constraints, living with my mum and a whingy older brother.

i thought Alesis monitors etc had to be played louder to get a more accurate sound???? :smt017

Can anyone give me a general review of M-Audio's monitor range if they have any experience with them please?

My mate has a pair of bx8a, they sound good i think (but i dont know shit about monitors). Considering cos i can get them from a mate in America for cheaper than what they are here which is around $1100 -$1300 i hear.

monitoring is very subjective, I know heaps of people who swear by Genelec, I find them really fatigueing. Mackie hr624's are my fave or KRK rokkit 6's.
