how do you sort your tunes? at home...
on the hd i do folders with style of music then folders with dates inside them...
after moving house three times and having my last flat mate un pack my records and completly jumble them up...
im just wondering how to make sense of 3000 records...
bought one of those ikea 25 crate wall units... gonna do genre, sub genre and order sub genre by year... sounds about right...
last time they were done by record label and genre.
anyway, ear infection is not making this as fun as it should be...

The guy from High Fidelity sorted is records chronologically from when he purchased them I think. Or was it alphabetically. I'm sure theres plenty of trainspotters who can advise you Rob.

I ditched my CD collection and went digital awhile back, but when I did have them around, they were in alphabetical order by artist, however they were mostly albums. If they were singles for DJing, I'd probably go chronological.

You could just do genre and artist. But that is way too simple.
do they still do those idea box things?

iTunes sorts my digital stuff for me (CD's and downloads).
Vinyl and CD's are sorted by genres and sub-genres, and grouped into artists.
Artist groupings take precedence over genres.

alphabetical by label. chronological order by cat number in each label.
sort by genre = fail.
in fact genres in general = fail.

its a sensible thing to do - but think about how good you want your achive to be for many years to come - might be good to go for an uncompressed file format if you can manage the spaceFriday wrote:FoundationStepper wrote:would not ditch my cds for mp3 collection

then again, 320s are good enough most of the time

Yeah, when I say I ditched my CD collection, I didn't mean literally throwing the CDs out. They're in storage, sans plastic cases. I just meant I stopped putting them on display, as if I used them regularly. But yeah, 99% of the time a 320 MP3 is completely acceptable.

genre -> year -> date purchased (to an extent, if lots within same week often just put in same date)
then traktor scratch or whatever im using to browse/search=easy (if burning cds then just find manually). usually by artists as someone mentioned above

Re: how do you sort your tunes? at home...
I sorted all mine by label once,
They were in order for a bit but after a few months I just cbf putting stuff back in order.
I reckon just sort them by genre, have a crate of stuff that you play, and just cycle through the collection every now and then and take out stuff you want to hear / put stuff back you've played heaps and sick of.

I first used iTunes late last year when I purchased my frist MAC.
I have just about finished uploading my CD's (effort).
But I have not uploaded any mix CD's at all (which will probably take another few weeks).
Anyone upload MIX CD's?

MP3's aren't seamless, there's gaps in between the tracks from what I've found. Well, there is on my iRiver, I'm assuming it's the same on the HD?

itunes 'determines gapless playback', so for mix cds it will play it fluid....Direkt wrote:Unless it's one big track, they don't mix do they?DBoy wrote:Anyone upload MIX CD's?

That way it will play perfectly.

I do a lot of shuffle play, guess I will just need to do that in playlists instead if MixCD's were in there.

Cusack in High Fidelity does the best explanation of sorting by 'Autobigraphical' means.
Can't remember it word for word, but it's something along the lines of going back to 8th grade blah blah - you get the idea.
I love that movie.

I saw an interesting segment on TV about piracy recently, it was aimed at movie piracy - but the rule can be applied to any sort of piracy; be it music, movies, software etc.
The "expert" talked about how it's often seen as a victimless crime, with people justifying the pirating of movies by claiming that Hollywood studios and stars have enough money as it is. But he then went on to say how distributors, advertisers, publicists and even the Mum and Dad retailers get burnt due to decreased money in the industry.
Food for thought... or lack therof.

My CD collection was loosely grouped into genres, with stuff I liked the most first... but they're all packed into boxes at the moment.
My record collection was loosely grouped into genres, with older stuff at the back of the boxes, kind of sorted into stuff I liked the best and stuff that sounded good together.
I'd never get rid of my CDs either. Some of them are rare as fuck.

shifting sands mate, shifting sands
Re: how do you sort your tunes? at home...
What do you mean by "shifting sands"?
It's obviously an important issue to me. My job aside, it's more about fucking over people with jobs and artists that concerns me. As well as record sales figures.
I've been pretty passionate about this issue long before I started working in wholesale.
I've seen too many great record stores go under recently... R.I.P. CRAM - Camberwell hasn't been the same since.
There's never been a shitload of money in music retail as it is (more so in recorded music), but now - it's a shambles. Record shops downsizing and closing up quite a bit of late - as well as musical instrument retailers (due to grey importing and piracy).
I would have thought more people on this forum gave a toss about these issues, being either employed in the industry or at least having the industry play a large part of their lives.

Re: how do you sort your tunes? at home...
Touchy subject. I buy records.
Re: how do you sort your tunes? at home...
well, you are right.....
If it were me, I'd be pretty passionate about it too I guess.
times change, focus shifts etc etc... I'm sure the lady at the video hire near my place is going broke. Probably has a lot to do with this. It would totally suck for her, but it's just the way things go... progress and all that. I think that (I'm talking mainly the movie industry here) taking money from the multi billion dollar hollywood movie industry is a good thing, lots of greed etc there for sure. music.... hmmm, I never DL or pirate music. But I don't discourage others to do it if they want to.
people adapt, music is about art and expression and entertainment and fun etc etc, not about industry money or whatevs... Music as an art form will still exist well after the shops have closed and the half-baked DJs and musos have gone and gotten day jobs. that's all I really care about tbh.
My parents had a very sucessful retail shop in the 80s and part of the 90s until a large national chain moved into their town and basically took their whole clientelle away from them. So yes, I have felt the pain. But there's fuck all you can do in reality and everyone needs to adapt and stop clinging to the past or the moraly righteous ideology. My parents have moved on and still live a very fulfilling life.
